This is an excellent spot and one of my favorites to just sit and watch and enjoy the power of the ocean. The surfers and waves are fantastic at least during the winter months, very enjoyable

On a overcast windy day, the windsurfers gave us a great show. If we had more time we would have made our way down to the actual beach. We did great ocean photos from the overlook.

While vacationing on Maui, we had occasion to visit this surfing area twice. The 1st time was on a rest stop while on a tour to the town of Hana while circumnavigating the the south lobe of the island. We were enjoying coffee and pastries while watching the surfers below our observation point on the car park area on the hill at the east end of the beach. We very much enjoyed the diverse users of the waves as there were board surfers, paddle board surfers and kite surfers with their brightly colored parachutes. There were over 30 people on the water and our view from our raised vantage point was very enjoyable. Later, while driving from a visit to the "cowboy" themed town called Makawao, we drove to Ho'okipa beach again and watched the surfers again.

My husband and I are so glad we didn't miss this place. Go there! You will see a lot of surfers and windsurfers. It's also known for it's green turtles. I was excited to see turtles in the water but then we walked on the beach and we saw 4 turtles just laying their on the beach! It was amazing. The town is also great. We loved all of the little stores. Go there!

This is one of the best places in the world for surfing photos . . . but bring a telephoto lens, at least 300mm.
