NKL is as nice or even nicer than it looks online!. A precious place in a great town.
The rooms are very pretty (I want that bathroom floor!)and give you just what you need; a great shower, perfect bed and refrigerator...if you are into seeing the island, surfing and thus not spending your day in your room. We are, so we loved it. The location is perfect, you feel part of the town within a couple of days. Very friendly and laidback other guest and the care-takers for the lodge are very ready to help you with whatever you need. Pai'a is a very cool and down to earth place. Last but not least, such a great value for the money! I am glad my instinct got us to NKL and not in a resort in South or West Maui. Mahalo Maria, Rita and David. We hope to see you again soon - Debbie & Julius (from the Netherlands, currently in Seattle)

As a single, female traveler, I felt very safe and secure in my cozy and clean room! The location is ideal! Within walking distance to everything in town, and only a 2 minute drive to Ho'okipa for the best surfing/windsurfing. Hands down, I would recommend Nalu Kai lodge to anyone looking for a unique experience that is much more enjoyable and personal than staying at a large resort.

We (husband, 2 month old infant and myself) stumbled upon Paia on the way to Hana and it ended up being our favorite place! After splurging and staying at a waaaaay expensive place literally 15 yards away (which was lovely), we needed a much more reasonably priced stay.

This was a last minute "booking" - I found them in the phone book, and called hoping for a vacancy. The lady I talked to was awesome, her name was Retha, and she was more than courteous and helpful. The price was as cheap as the first place we stayed in, Maui Beach Hotel (**shudders**) so we were a bit nervous to see what we were getting into. Nalu Lodge was perfect! Parking was a snap, right in front of a gorgeous tree limb gate, and as soon as we walked in I knew we were in the right place. There was a cute tiki bar, an outdoor grill and a couple of loungers inside of the bamboo fence. Right next to that was a courtyard with eclectic bences and a double hammock!
The room we had was small, but larger than the pricey hotel's room for half the price. The room had two twin beds that we pushed together (it was the only room they had left) and an adorable bathroom area separated with a curtain. All new shower, sink and toilet, and sparkling clean.

As soon as we got settled, we grilled some food and hung out with our baby at the tiki bar. We were pleasantly surprised to find that after sunset, the bamboo fence and tiki roof were strung with white lights AND there was a lovely waterfall switched on right next to it. The ambiance was lovely. This was the best place we stayed in on the entire island, and our best night's sleep. The ocean breeze blowing through the window was soothing and cool, and we had no problems at all with any street noise. This isn't a resort, and its not a place to come to if you're looking for one. If you're in the mood for a genuine Maui vibe, with real Maui people, in an unpolished, good natureed Hippie town, than this is THE spot! We LOVED it!!!

I agree with all of the good reviews below! This place feels like sweet breeze smellin', beachy, authentic, cool, beautiful north shore Maui! Clean, comfortable, great tradewind breeze, decent price. Waking distance to everything in cool Paia town. Close to the best beaches in Maui (north shore) & on the Road to Hana. It is not a resort.....Thank God!!

We just stayed at Nalu Kai. It’s not the most fancy place around, but it is the most genuine flavor of the north shore. If you want to meet real people, who aren’t wearing a uniform, but can give you the good suggestions, places to see, and things to do, Nalu Kai works.

We stayed in one of the upstairs rooms. I suggest one of those because the views and the breezes are nicest. We would wake up, go across the street for a coffee and breakfast, and sit out on the deck. We’d make our own orange juice in the mornings and even picked the oranges off one of the trees outside. The courtyard is small, but has a nice lava-looking waterfall, a tiki area, and a hammock in the shade.

The staff was having a barbecue one night and invited us to join them. We met people like us who were living and working on Maui. From that point on we didn’t feel like “the others”, but rather guests at a guesthouse. We tried haupia – an ono (delicious), homemade, coconut cake – and learned some things about Maui from a local’s perspective.

Thank you to the staff at Nalu Kai. We’d definitely recommend it to anyone who’s not looking for the resort-type experience, anyone who prefers European chalets to Disney Land, or anyone who wants to experience some relaxation and real people.

We were there in the fall and you could hear the waves at night. Apparently they’re larger in the winter. ‘Very peaceful.

Unfortunately, you could also hear the dumpster being emptied into a garbage truck on a Monday morning, but the manager had warned us about that one ahead of time. And, that was really the only disturbance.

Overall, I’d recommend Nalu Kai to a friend.

We were to stay here the last 2 nights of our honeymoon. When we got there, we were completely unhappy. The room was extremely small, hotter than a sauna and there was absolutely no view of the ocean or mountain which was stated in the property description. We could not believe it. The walls were paper thin, there were soo many homeless people walking around and digging through garbages, I mean we could not stay there. That night we called around to find a room and ended up driving about 15 minutes to a beautiful bed and breakfast. My husband and I are not extravagent people but we just could not stand to be at that place another minute. Definitly a thumbs down.

  • Liked — there was a yummy gelato place right in front of the place

The Nalu Ki Lodge was a wonderful surprise! Walking in the gates you will find yourself in a manicured landscape garden, the waterfall was a nice feature to look at and listen to. We really enjoyed the friendly atmosphere at the Tiki Bar and how all rooms came out to the courtyard. Rooms are comfortable and very clean, loved the shower, lots of water! We aIso loved our welcome plumeria flowers on our bed,. The management was there to help us with our needs always. You can't go wrong staying at the Naly Ki Lodge if you don't want to spend an arm and a leg. We had a blast in Maui! Thanks Maria for such great service! You are a doll!
