“worth a trip”
Reviewed November 8, 2007

We've been to this restaurant twice in the last 2 years, on separate trips to Maui, and loved it both times. We are NOT "foodies", but do love to eat in off-the-beaten-track places, and NON tourist trap places. This certainly qualifies.
The restaurant is in the middle of a small paniolo town in upcountry Makawao, on the lower slope of Haleakala volcano. It is always much cooler up there than down on the beaches. The restaurant is located in a historic 1920 rambling house, with wonderful uneven wood floors, many small rooms here and there, and fireplaces-- with FIRES going-- much needed in the cool evening air. It usually rains in the evenings at this elevation and location, which just adds to the mood. Decor is all Hawaiian-- painted scenes from around the island abound, wood panelled walls in every room. The service is slow, but this is a slow-down kind of place, so you certainly do NOT feel rushed. You WILL need a reservation on Friday and Saturday evenings-- we luckily had made one several hours before arrival, when we were told what times were still open. Quite a few people without reservations were lingering around outside (under a small canopy in the RAIN) waiting a possible seat.
That evening-- the place was almost entirely filled with LOCALS-- always a good sign in my book. Languages from around the world were spoken at neighboring tables. The steaks are local beef, hand cut, and EXCELLENT-- simply and perfectly cooked and served. The salad bar is a bit ho-hum, but works just fine. Do try the papaya-poppyseed dressing tho! I can still taste my melt-in-the-mouth filet mignon... and my husband is still sighing over the memory of his steak with the brandy peppercorn sauce. A perfect evening out for us, every time. Very good (but not world-class) food in a very different and unique atmosphere. Well worth the trip, if you don't have mainland expectations in you.

“Un-touristy”
Reviewed May 15, 2006

Upcountry place. Went there on our way back from Hana. Good food, casual setting. Definitely off the tourist beaten path. If you're in Makawao, good place, but I wouldn't make a special trip to go there.
