“Heavenly Stay at the Aloha Cottage”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 13, 2008

Upon arriving from a 15 hr. flight to "The Aloha Cottage" we felt like we were in paradise! Entering the beautiful grounds lush with tropical flora, sweet smells of Eucoliptis and banana trees, too numberable to describe. We climbed up steps to arrive at a place only our dreams could imagine, high in the clouds, our own private place of impecible interior and exterior design. Sounds of a trickiling water fountain and chirping birds welcomed us. The sight a an outside bathtub for two, with private balcony was too much for the weary traveler.
Walking into the bedroom the beauty of the decor continued to draw us into a place of peace and serinity. The huge King Bed in the center of the room (with an opening in the ceiling where you can watch the thousands of stars at night !) was the most romantic setting I've ever experience. The decor made you feel as if you were in a far away land, with rugs, pictures, stautues all from Bali (thus the name Bai Bungelo).
The kitchen was well stocked and even had coffee, sugar, cream and morning extras.
I have NEVER stayed in an accomadation more serine and visually comforting with the sights and smells that lured my soul. My husband didn't even want to leave to explore Maui, he wanted to come back and enjoy our new home".
One of the beautys of " The Aloha Cottage" is its closeness to everything. No matter where we were traveling it was within 30-45 minutes from our home base. Also, because it is in the high country, it is cool at night (50's) and glorious to hear the wind and feel the mountain breezes as you sleep.
The owners were incredibly helpful sharing ALL their secret "favorites" from where to eat, where to go sightseeing and most important where NOT to go!
I hesitate to write this knowing It will be hard to get a reservation once the word gets out, but, I want to share this glorious Eden with the world. Truly the owners Ranjana and Ron have blessed me with a memory that will last a lifetime! (I WILL RETURN)

We have just returned from a week at the Aloha Cottage (Bali Bungalow) near Macawao on the Hawaiian Island of Maui. The bungalow exceeded our expectations in ambience and privacy. The bungalow is beautifully decorated with items from around the world as well as rich plush carpets. The bed is large, custom-made, very comfortable and we loved looking at the stars from the overhead skylight at night. The hosts are very accomodating and you feel at home in this place.

The kitchen was well stocked with cooking implements so that you can enjoy breakfast or coffee on your own private veranda. The bungalow is situated on a hill and surrounded by beautiful landscaping and accessible via a private driveway. We felt very lucky to find this place. Everything about the bungalow from the amenities, the landscape, the beautiful wood carvings, to the sounds of birds outside gave this place a feeling of private sanctuary.

More importantly, the bungalow while private and peaceful, was only 20 minutes from the airport. The nearby town of Macawao is a ten minute drive and very nice with small shops and restaurants. Beaches are also only minutes away.

We have visited Hawaii before and this was by far the best experience that we have ever had. If you are looking for a place to stay that avoids busy tourist locations so that you can relax, this is defiinitely the place to be. We felt completely rested after this trip and definitely plan to return.

Went based on Tripadvisor reviews and once again members steared us straight. We signed onto trip advisor for the specific purpose of writing this review, though we have meant to sign up after being at other hotels before this.

I know the Bali Bungalow is newer, and we did not see its interior in person. However, the Thai treehouse left nothing to be desired (except maybe an ocean view). It was WONDERFUL. We did not see the owners until the 2nd or 3rd day of our stay, but it is NOT because they were unavailable. They left us a welcome message and encouraged us to stop by the main house (their home). We opted not to because we were enjoying pretending that we were in the middle of nowhere in our own little cottage. Though we were elusive, the owners, Ranjana in particular, were completely enthusiastic about helping us plan our activities. For instance, Ranjana had prepared an "alternate" guide, so to speak, to the road to Hana, and we skipped the major attractions but were still blown away by her tips on little secret beaches, etc.. Once we met Ranjana in person, we went to the office in their house and bought some souveniers - items she had brought back from Bali and other Southeast Asian locations. She and her husband are very interesting people(I mean this sincerely, NOT as a euphamism for "weird"), but we only discovered this because we chose to. Again, after 3 days of ignoring them to play honeymoon.
The design and decorating details were truly inspired. The cottage was extremely comfortable and clean. My only regret was that the loft area was closed off, likely because they could not absolutely guarantee that a less coordinated guest would not hurt themselves on the ladder built into the wall.
Only other negative, and this is silly: Of the DVDs that were in the cottage, we chose to watch The Prestige, which totally sucked us in, but then completely stopped working halfway through. We were dying to know what happened until we got back to NY and rented it. So don't invest the hour in The Prestige. Otherwise, enjoy they little touches of home. We really enjoyed staying in and cooking on occassion.

Also, Makawao is an amazing little cowboy town. Yes, its shops do cater to tourists, but we didn't see many. It really felt like you were visiting someone's home in the country. I had not anticipated this aspect of Hawaiian culture. Some of it feels like the American West - in a good way (cows and horses in rolling pastures).

Anyway, we only hope that you will get to enjoy this "inn" and join in the experience so many of its reviewers have had. There need to be MORE places like this. I don't know if we could ever stay in a Marriott again!
(Oh, and it was worth rearranging the dates of our trip to fit the Treehouse's availabilty.)

First I'll start off saying that the idea and location of the property was perfect, meaning the separate private cottage, where no one bothered you and of course, the views. First, though, if you follow the directions that they give you, you'll miss your turn, their lane is before the mailbox with all the reflectors, I think they need to relook their instructions. The accommodations were comfortable. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate and we didn't get to enjoy a lot of the outside amenities. It is certainly a quiet, restful place to stay. But, for the cost, and not being a traditional B&B (no breakfast), there were also no little soaps, shampoos, as we have had in other B&B-like locations. Yes, they did provide shampoo and conditioner in the shower, big bottles left to be used guest-to-guest. We would have also liked to have had a full-sized coffee pot, not the 4-cup pot that they had, also would have liked to had beach towels too. When they called from the main house to check on us, and asked how we liked things so far, I mentioned that we would have liked to have had beach towels provided and was told that we were to use the bath towels that were in the cottage...who knew! They did provide straw-type mats to be used on the beach, however, one was very tattered and torn and unrolled every time you touched it. I also mentioned that when we went to use the cooler that they provided, it was filled with sandy snorkling gear, and was told "oh that's just a little thing". Certainly not what I expected to hear! The refrigerator in the cottage made a loud thudding noise when it cut off, so it took a couple of nights to get used to that recurring noise. Not sure I'd go back.

  • Disliked — Amenities not comparable with price.

My husband and I were on Maui for a 10 day honeymoon. We stayed in three different locations so we could see and do as much as possible. We stayed at the Thai treehouse for four nights, in the middle of our trip. Instantly upon driving up the driveway, and walking into the cottage, it was what honeymoon dreams are made of. The Thai Treehouse was very clean and well kept. The decor was beautiful. The private balcony and soaking tub were wonderful. There are wonderful restaurants not more than 10 minutes away. It was a perfect place to have our honeymoon, not just another vacation. I would, and do, highly recommend the Thai Treehouse to my friends.

We just returned from our honeymoon, and the Thai Treehouse was a great way to begin it! The cottage is located away from the hustle and bustle of Lahaina etc, a private lanai under the stars, a very homey feel. You're about 10 minutes from downtown Makawao and Paia where you can find great food and shopping.. more unique Maui than the tourist shops. Ranjana had everything we could possibly need (including things we wouldn't think of-- like a cooler!) and had fantastic recommendations. If you are looking to get away from it all, I highly suggest the Aloha Cottage. If you want to be in the middle of everything, this is not the place for you... It was great to come back to the cottage just to be with my new husband and no one else :)

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the lovely Thai Tree House. The hosts, Ron and Ranjana, are very helpful and steered us in the right direction as far as restaurants and activities in the area. If you're looking for a private get-away from the hustle and bustle of the resorts, this is the place for you. You are in the middle of a beautiful, cool forest where you can hear the trees swaying in the wind as you fall asleep each night. The patio offers a beautiful view of the daily rainbows. The outdoor tub invites you to relax each evening while viewing the stars. We highly recommend the Thai Tree House!
