“Peaceful, luxurious retreat! MUST GO!”
Reviewed July 23, 2013

Lumeria lived up to all our expectations and more! Our family of four spend three nights at this luxiourous, heavenly and peaceful retreat in July. Tina at the front desk was extremely helpful. Our room was ready before check in time as requested. We were in one bedroom suite that was quite spacious with a day bed in the front room big enough for our two kids (12 and 9). The grounds are absolutely well manicured and inviting. Kids loved the pool and the spa. Because the property is quite small, we had the pool and the restaurant (for breakfast) to our selves many times. We took one yoga class as a family and the hubby did couple by himself. Only wish the classes were held outdoors on the beautiful lawn while were there. We ran into Xorin most days on the property and exchanged pleasantries. He inquired about our stay as I was checking out on the last day. We drove into Paia for dinner every night as we weren't sure how the kids would respond to pre-set dinner menu at the restaurant. Breakfast (included as part of the stay) was simple but delicious. Tina also booked stand up paddle board lessons for the kids and they had a blast.

If you want to escape the mega resorts and still be within 30 minutes from the heart of Maui North Shore, Lumeria is your place! The mountains surrounding the property are magical! I cannot wait to go back and see what new things they have in store!

We took a flyer on this hotel because we found it while searching for places to stay in the area. We like the hilly parts of Maui and enjoy a break from the bustle of tourism. The Lumeria has completely lived up to expectation and even surpassed it. There is no way to capture 'the feeling' of a place with pictures and only few, talented writers, can do it with words. All I will say is -- a MUST STAY if you want to de-stress, re-invigorate or simple enjoy unbelievably beautiful surroundings. The care and attention to detail here will amaze.

Room Tip: They are all spectacular and individual

We found our two-night stay at Lumeria to be lovely. The buildings and grounds are truly special and the staff is great. When we first arrived, Christine warmly greeted us and gave us a tour. One of their groundskeepers, Mario, went out of his way to be friendly and helpful. The next day there were a few different staff members on the grounds (I wish I could remember their names, because they were exceptionally welcoming and helpful as well).
We found Lumeria's location to be a great base for exploring. During our stay we went on a hike at Twin Falls, explored the main streets in Pa'ia and Makawao, and went out to eat at Hailimaile General Store and Mamas Fish House, all of these activities and restaurants were close by. I loved the balance between exploring the surrounding areas a bit and then coming back to Lumeria and relaxing by the pool or in a hammock. While I was there I tried 3 different yoga classes and there were just a few people in each ( 2/3 classes had subs so that may not be normal). I enjoyed having yoga right on the property. We also had 2 great massages with Vicky (lomi lomi and hot-stone) while we were there. The rooms are smaller than a standard hotel room, but beautifully appointed, there is also a porch and daybed just outside each room. I highly recommend Lumeria.

We absolutely loved our stay at the Lumeria. The hotel has only been open a year so I think people should cut them some slack as they figure out the kinks. We couldn't have been happier. Everyone was extremely friendly and they went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. We spent two nights there then drove to Hana where we had planned to stay for two nights. We were so disappointed by the Travaasa Hana Hotel that we canceled our second night to return to the Lumeria (luckily they had room for us). We couldn't wait to get there. The rooms were spacious, high ceilings, beautiful, comfortable and clean. Our children (6 & 8) loved it as well. The new general manager gave our girls a private 30min yoga session, for free, and just because! Incredible. Also, they just finished the pool 4 months ago and Xorin's plans for the hotel are so exciting. 40 acres of walking and running trails, fruit trees and they'll build another building to use as their restaurant. The only thing I would mention was that I thought the chef didn't need to try so hard to be exotic with the meal. More simple flavors would have been more than sufficient. Let the food quality speak for iteself. It also would have been helpful to have a vegetarian option and to know in advance that it was BYOB. But we will be back for sure. We loved every minute there.

Room Tip: we stayed in a King suite on the edge of the pine tree and hammock "forest". There was no...

Dear Heather!

Thank you so much for your review. It was so nice to have you here, and we are all looking forward to when you all come back to stay with us again! We hope the girls continue to practice yoga - their Tree Poses were amazing - just like our trees in the Whispering Pine Forest behind the Yoga Shala!
We hope that we've planted seeds for their yoga practice to continue throughout their lives!
Have a wonderful rest of the summer!

Aloha,

Lumeria is a unique experience where you can get away from the hectic city life and come to relax in a tranquil environment. From the moment you arrive you are greeted with friendly and hospitable staff. The grounds are amazing filled with beautiful plants and trees. Hammocks in the back where you can just relax, take a nap, read a book. And the pool and the hot tub! Always a plus since the ocean water is a little rough on some of us.

The rooms are a good size and such comfortable beds! Keep your windows open at night and feel the cool breeze come through the room. At night, sit out by the fire on the couches it's so relaxing and enjoyable.

The food at Lumeria is amazing! Definitely have dinner here. We ate at mamas fish house and this food is very comparable. The breakfast is also very good. Fresh fruit, granola and yogurt and breads.

The location of Lumeria is also great because its in the center of everything. If you want to do the road to hana it begins right up the street. If you want to go to Lahaina or any of the other cities in Maui they are all just a short drive away. The hotel is also situated between two cities: Paia and Makawao so there are other great places to eat and see.

Whats also great about this hotel is that it's very private. Even though this hotel is currently sold out, you would think that no one is here. There are so many gathering places at Lumeria that no one area ever gets congested. Even surprisingly at the pool it's perfect.

Im actually on my honeymoon right now and my husband and I both thought of how amazing Lumeria would be for a wedding. There are only about 20 rooms and if we had our families rent out the entire space for a week/weekend it would have been awesome. It's so beautiful and they definitely have the space.

If you like yoga this is the place to be. Yoga classes are included in your stay and they are available everyday throughout the day. They have classes for all levels. The other day they were doing yoga on the lawn with a guitar player playing and singing. Pretty awesome.

If you are looking for a unique amazing experience then Lumeria is definitely the hotel to stay at when visiting Maui.

I read some of the lower score reviews, and I have to say that I understand where the complaints are coming from, but think that they need to understand Hawaii and the history of the complex. We stayed for 3 nights in July, after spending time in hectic Honolulu. It was a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of the big city.
Lumeria was initially a recovery center for soldiers, then a retreat for plantation executives and finally quarters for plantation workers. The history of the buildings is amazing and the fact that they restored the run-down structures is special. The rooms are not huge, but the history of the rooms explains the smaller size. They are all decorated with different furnishings thus adding to the unique quality of this hotel.
Yes, you do have to walk and negotiate 4 or 5 steps, but I would rather do that than be "processed" through a giant lobby and wait 20 minutes for a bellman to deliver my luggage and then stick his hand out for a tip.
Yes, there is not air conditioning in the rooms, but hey this is Hawaii, and the breeze is constant and the sounds of the wind through the trees is truly peaceful. I grew up on Oahu, and I don't remember ever having air conditioning.
Yes, there is a lack of privacy. Our commode was right by the open window, but with only 26 rooms, there were not many people around to worry about. I never heard any of our neighbors and most of the guests are respectful of the noise.
Yes, the workers have a laid back attitude, but this is Hawaii. "Hang loose". Everything moves at a different pace throughout the Islands. Questions were all taken care of with a smile.
Yes, the restaurant is small, but the breakfasts were great and plentiful, featuring local fruits and homemade breads and granola. If there is not room in the restaurant there is plenty of room on the lanai, right outside, which we did all three mornings. We also ate there one evening, (doing what was suggested and making reservations in advance). The service was good, the food was outstanding. All local foods, and home made. We are foodies and this was a GOOD dinner.
I am not a yoga person, but my daughters and wife enjoyed classes each day. We were able to relax on the lanai, at the salt water pool, or in the hammocks scattered around the property.
The surrounding area offers many restaurants, bakeries and small grocery stores, plus you have a head start heading to Haleakala for sunrise!
Xorin introduced himself the very first day and we saw him daily. The staff from, Xorin, to the grounds crew were friendly and respectful, keeping your privacy if you wish, but if you wanted, very engaging. I had a great talk with one of the groundskeepers, (I wish I remembered his name) but we talked about his family and his 4 year old son at length.
So in summary, I really enjoyed my stay at Lumeria. We loved the complex, our room, the meals, the classes, and especially the people. Our biggest regret was that we did not get a massage, which we heard are outstanding. We will go back when we get the chance.
Thanks, Lumeria staff.

Room Tip: Try to get an outside room, i.e. not facing the center courtyard.

Aloha Stephen!

Thank you so much for your review of Lumeria Maui. We really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. Thank you for expressing the importance of the property's history. This is such a crucial piece of the Lumeria story, and it is wonderful that others feel the same. We have a "property history" section on our website right now, which will be more extensive after our website re-build is completed. We just found some amazing old photography of the buildings and property, and will be hanging the prints in the buildings. Renovating the buildings with respect to the original structures and original design was so important to the owner, and he appreciates your comments very much!

We're glad that you enjoyed the food, and that your wife and daughter enjoyed yoga class.
We hope you go for a Lomi Lomi or Hot Stone massage when you come back!
