I came to Maui on my own looking to possibly relocate. Pono tailor-made a fabulous itinerary for me which included areas, properties, and an awesome realtor. He spent the day showing me properties that fit my lifestyle. What man does that without complaining!! He was so patient and understanding. We also went to Iao valley which is absolutely breathtaking. Pono is completely immersed in Hawaiian culture and was able to educate me about fruits and plants. He made a beautiful feast of papaya, passion fruit, macadamia nut cookies and chocolates, strawberries and tangarines from his farm. I thoroughly enjoyed my 8 hours with my new best friend and hope that others will appreciate his talents and efforts on our behalf.

Pono’s hospitality and willingness to work with you to define a custom itinerary is unique in my experiences with private tours. He asked what we were interested in seeing and planned our tour accordingly (as an example, he took us to a traditional healing shrine since I am a physician and requested to see such a spot). He also took my partner and I to a very special spot overlooking the ocean and led us through a traditional Hawaiian greeting and blessing.

His immense knowledge of the island of Maui allowed him to select places that would be of particular interest to our family. He also made special efforts to accommodate our two and a half year old son, who also enjoyed the tour immensely. Pono drove us in his own vehicle, which made the whole experience effortless and enjoyable for all of us.

From small touches, such as a greeting with plumeria leis that Pono made himself with flowers from his farm, to the expert knowledge Pono has with the Hawaiian culture and language, I felt as if we became part of and understood more about the Hawaiian’s (and in particular, the Mauians), than I would ever ever gleaned from other tour guides or certainly, from a group tour experience.

Pono also prepared a fantastic luncheon for us with fruit from his own farm and other touches that really made the day special.

I have had experience with private tour guides in all corners of the globe, and Pono is the best I have encountered. Look no further for your private tour needs while on Maui, and treat yourself to an experience that you will never forget.

I just returned from a day trip to Hana from Barry Pono Fried of Open Eye Tours. Me, my spouse and two children (ages 11 and 14) all have different interests, and Pono was able to satisfy us all.

It began with him picking us up and presenting us with fragrant leis he handmade from flowers grown in his organic garden. He proceeded to take us on a fabulous journey, weaving ancient Hawaiian legends and stories into his commentary.

Knowledgeable about edible plants and herbs, he stopped frequently to pick pretty flowers and explain their origins. He has lived on maui for like three decades and knows all the "off the beaten track" places that visitors would never discover on their own.

In Hana he took us to a private waterfall and a fresh water swimming hole, in addition to caves and a gorgeous beach. He never rushed us, and patiently shared his love of this beautiful island and culture. He prepared and shared treats grown in his garden, and even brought his ukele and played us some songs (he is very musical.)

Charming, polite and very engaging, Pono really delivers what he promises. You can't find a better private tour guide on the island. I would definitely recommend him, and would book him again in a heartbeat. His tour was a memorable highlight of our maui experience.

Our family has taken four tours with Pono Fried and Open Eye Tours and Photos. For each tour, Pono Fried carefully planned our days based upon the interests we stated in our pre-tour consultations. We ended each tour with complete and total satisfaction and felt like we had seen parts of Maui we would never have been able to find on our own. For the last tour we took in December, 2010, Pono planned an outdoor classroom day for our 7-year old great niece, showing us elements of Maui's geography, plant-life, wild-life and culture. We learned a simple hula, strung leis, visited a taro patch and heard stories of Maui's earliest settlers. We sang songs, played games and had a simply wonderful day. Pono uses his masters degree in education and 28 years of tour-guide experience to guide you through a day that is filled with education, interpretation and most of all fun. He is easy to be with and makes you feel like you are the most important people in all of Maui. I heartily recommend taking a private tour with Pono Fried of Open Eye Tours and Photos. You will have an amazing day and experience Maui's Aloha spirit in such a way that I'm positive your tour will become one of your favorite Maui memories!
