This was our first time in a B&B and I was pretty impressed. The place has a lot of character, a nice selection of books to read and art to look at. Cherie was very helpful. Each morning as I was planning what I'd need for the day she'd magically appear and offer a cooler or boogie board or beach mats. The breakfast was very good and as a bonus included a wide assortment of local jams. Makawao is pretty cool also - a few shops & restaurants worth checking out if you have an hour. We stayed in the Jasmine room. The bed was very comfortable. If I had to offer some critcism it would be that there wasn't much space to put our clothes or bath supplies, and you had to practically crawl over the toilet to get into the shower - but I guess this is what comes with converting an old house to a B&B.
Overall it was an interesting alternative to the beach scene - a totally different side of Maui.

It's your worst honeymoon nightmare...a few weeks before you leave you find out that you've made a mistake with your reservations and suddenly you are left without a hotel room for a single night in Maui. Everyplace you call is booked or so ridiculously expensive your whole budget will be blown. Enter laid-back, flexible Hale Ho'okipa Bed and Breakfast. A small but pretty, organic-minded inn a short walk to Makawao and a short drive to Haleakala National Park. Though we only stayed one night at this B&B we were thoroughly impressed. Cool, airy, historic, and inexpensive (about $100-145 a night, which for a Hawaiian B&B is a pretty good deal).

Though the owner, an avid hiker and trail guide, caters to the outdoorsy set, anyone is welcome, and we had the best conversation with the owner and guests over breakfast than we've had in any B&B to date.

Just two words of caution: the rooms and bathrooms are small, and because the B&B is near town, it can get a little noisy (the house across the street had some roosters and a very vocal goat) and there's some assorted traffic noise (you're on a side street, but not far from main road). However, you'll find a handy supply of comfy earplugs on your dresser and after a day of hiking in Haleakala, you'll be sure to sleep soundly.

We had a wonderful experience here. The Kona Wing was perfect for our family of four--lots of space and we didn't have to worry that our kids might be too energetic for some of the other bed and breakfast guests since they were not right next door. The inn's location is perfect for getting up to see the sunrise at Haleakala and it's 10 minutes from the beach. Cherie, the owner, was really helpful--she not only gave us great advice but also lent us a wonderful CD and a cooler to use on a trip to Hana. If you're looking for an up-country family-friendly quiet place to stay, try this inn!
