“Special place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2013

We stayed at this B&B for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our room was small but comfortable. The breakfasts were amazing, with a buffet of fresh fruits and all kinds of bread, cereals, etc. Enjoyed chatting with owner, her helpers, and other guests, over breakfast.
This house was built in the '20s by a Portuguese family. Decor is wonderful

If you want a truly special experience, then stay at the Hale Ho'okipa Inn on Maui. The owner, Cherie Attix, has created a little bit of heaven on earth. The decor, food and hospitality is excellent. I stayed in the Rose room with my own bath...the tub had feet! So quaint!
Breakfast included a fresh fruit salad (from her garden), eggs gathered from her chickens, yogurt and lots of aloha! Enjoy the peace and tranquility of this lovely place.

Loved staying at Hale Ho'okipa B&B. I enjoyed just being there on the grounds under the beautiful trees on Cherie's property reading my book listening to the birds. It is very quiet and serene at Cherie's even with all of the guest in their rooms which I much appreciated. The beds are so comfortable that I slept really well with window open and the cool night upcountry breeze on my face. It is in the low 60's at night in winter.

Cherie is an amazing host who knows so much about Maui where to eat, beautiful forests to hike, and interesting places to visit. Cherie has put a book in every room written by a person on Maui called Island Life 101 by Jill Engledow. Be sure to read it while you are there. I learned a lot about the islands, the people, and the culture.

Breakfast is one of the best that I have had at a B&B with fresh fruit from the garden and really good Brown Cow yogurt (I am a yogurt snob from California) with fresh granola. My kind of food. Plus there are fresh eggs warm from Cherie's chickens and ducks. Nothing like eating an egg just laid by the hen. What a special treat!!

As a solo woman traveler Cherie had great advice for me about things to do and place to go. I felt very taken care of and at home. Highly recommend this B&B. It is a gem on Maui.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are wonderful with carefully chosen Hawaiian artifacts that Cherie has collected ov...

This was our fourth visit to Hawaii in the last 2 years (yes, we have the bug). After a stop on Molokai -- a fun place to explore for a few days -- we headed back to our favorite island Maui. We have stayed several places on the island -- including condos and hotels -- but we're always drawn back to Hale Ho'okipa. Innkeeper Cherie is just plain fun to be around -- eager to share her love and knowledge of Maui and she puts on a bountiful breakfast feast. But also -- and I almost hate to say this lest the upcountry be overrun with tourists -- for me, this is flat-out the best location to stay in on the island. It's away from the over-touristed areas...but easy to get anywhere you want to go. 15 minutes up the hill from the airport...the north beaches just back down the hill...the south end beaches just a little longer drive...and it's a great place to start if you want to take the drive to Hana. Plus the hiking in and around Haleakala is a delight for outdoors lovers. If all you want to do is hang out on a beach every day, go stay at one of the overpriced south or west-side hotels with the rest of the crowd (and I do mean crowd). But if you want a real getaway -- and a better feel for the real Maui -- then park yourself in Makawao at the Hale Ho'okipa. It's a great jumping off point for any Maui adventure -- and I've never slept better in my life.

We had the same experience as a previous reviewer in transitioning from the giant resort to this peaceful, historic inn. Good location in a neighborhood and convenient for exploring the highlights of the Upcountry. Our room was very quiet and spacious with a soft bed. Cherie helped us map out the big hike through the crater (not to be missed!). The fresh fruit salad at the morning breakfast was delicious -- a Maui food highlight!

After staying at a major beachside resort for a few days, we felt we had not really seen Maui. Moving to the Hale Ho'okipa B&B was the best thing we did. Not only were we close to the Crater (saving us some sleep in the morning) but we met fabulous people. Cherie is full of warmth and has a big round table for the delicious morning breakfasts with a blend of interesting guests. After an early morning trip to the Crater we returned, ate an incredible breakfast and learned what to do that day. She directed us to a beach with great snorkeling, sea turtles and very few people, as well as to a hiking trail that I could not find in any guide books. I felt like I was a personal guest in her home.

This bed and breakfast is as charming as they come. We had an extremely wonderful experience and can't say enough positive things about it. It is located in a pleasantly cool spot, just near the mountains, within walking distance from Makawao town.

The rates were extremely reasonable, especially considering the extraordinary breakfasts that were provided each morning. We enjoyed the best fruit salad we've ever had in our lives, many of the fruits picked from the backyard.

Our host was extremely friendly and gracious, yet she respected our privacy and made us feel right at home.

I highly recommend Hale Hookipa!
The gentleman who wrote the negative review clearly has no idea what it's like to stay in a bed and breakfast. Please disregard his poor attitude, as he is obviously better off sticking to hotels.
