There is something for EVERYONE at the Makawao Garden Cafe, tucked between The Mercantile & Sherri Reeves Gallery on Baldwin Avenue in the heart of historic Makawao Town.
*note: having read all the reviews, the one's mentioning indoor seating or location next to glassblowing shop are actually referring to Market Fresh Bistro. Also a good place, totally diff menu than Makawao Garden Cafe, but much more pricey.
Back to Makawao Garden Cafe!
Love it! All seating is outdoors. Fresh air, great vibe! Umbrella's provide either relief from the sun or upcountry mist.
A true "Mom & Pop", owners Kathy & Jodi Sparks & Nephew Steve put their heart & soul into the food & you can tell.
Jodi bakes fresh foccacia bread daily, which is to die for. Perfect bit of crust on the top, soft & flavorful on the inside. Highly addicting. Depending on the day, you can ask for one of his homemade cookies. Chocolate chip, or (if you're lucky), my fave--oatmeal & blueberry. YUM!
His wife Kathy is a whirlwind! She's the server, cashier, prep cook, you name it, she does it. Yet, she always takes the time to make guests feel at home, answer questions (not just about their food, but the town, island, etc.)
Their nephew, Steve, tirelessly whips up sandwhiches, salads, etc. To perfection.
I'm a regular & love that Kathy always knows exactly what I want & how I like it made.
The dishes are always consistent.
Price-wise, Makawao Garden Cafe is the BEST DEAL in town if not the entire island. There's no place else where you can get a fresh Ono sandwhich with crisp veggies, homemade wasabi mayo, served on the delish foccacia PLUS a side of ceasar with (of course) homemade dressing for $8 & some change. STEAL!
Their soups are amazing. My favorite is the Thai Coconut. The broth will haunt you...you'll beg for the recipe! I love that there's nice whole veggies in all their soups.
Satisfying & hearty. Not to mention a cup only costs $2.50! You get a LOT of soup for that. The $5 bowl is enough for two people.
My favorite sandwhich is the Snow Crab & Avocado. Rich, creamy, NOT greasy (I think they use sourcream instead of mayo as a mix...not sure, though), buttery, local avocados from local farmers...mmm.
A half order of this sandwhich is enough if you're not starving. Then again, it's so good I usually want the other half after about an hour. :)
My girlfriend is a vegetarian (halfhearted, sometimes vegan) & she loves this place too.
She always orders the Eggplant sandwhich on foccacia. It's served w/goatcheese, but you can choose to leave it off.
I'm not usually a veggie sandwhich fan, but this one is GOOD! Filling, satisfying, suuuuuper tasty.
They also make good smoothies for $5, which is cheaper than anyplace else in town. They don't add any sugar, dairy or ice. Just fruit, fruit, fruit.
The "Nirvana" is awesome. Banana, strawberry, pineapple, lilikoi, mango. To die for.
Like another reviewer mentioned, on a crowded day, it can take a while to get your meal, but the setting is lovely & the food is worth the wait.
For the past forever, Kathy managed all 11 tables solo, running around like a whirling dervish.
She recently brought a lovely lady into the crew to help, so orders & drinks are taken a lot quicker. Yay!
On the other hand, if you peek into the kitchen, you'll forgive any wait when you see the volume of QUALITY meals that they pump out of a tiny space, with limited resources and one overworked, but pleasant chef-Steve.
So, take it from this regular...if you are in Maui, the Makawao Garden Cafe is a MUST do. Not a fancy menu, but amazing food, freshness that can't be beat at prices that are unheard of on Maui.
I've been going at least once a week for a decade & will for (hopefully) many years to come!
