“Loved Royal Lahaina!”
Reviewed August 1, 2006

My husband and I eloped to Maui but with a limited budget, Royal Lahaina was perfect for us. I read some of the reviews on this site that advised to only get a cottage as the rooms were not great. We stayed in the oceanfront cottage to the right of the 'royal suite' cottage, it was literally 10 feet from the beach!! I couldn't imagine anyone writing a bad review of this beautiful place until I went to get a replacement key for our cottage and an unhappy guest was at the front desk, waiting on the manager. She told me that the Hale wing was right next to where the luau is held every night and that it is impossible to hear anything but banging drums and people shouting. She and her family hadn't slept for two nights and was UPSET. A few nights later, we attended the luau and sure enough, the Hale wing is overlooking the dining area of the luau. And it was loud! I can't imagine having a room right next to this event! What poor planning! Luckily, our cottage was on the far end of the property, where it was VERY dark and VERY quiet. But we wouldn't have known any better if we hadn't done a bit of research. Do not stay in the Hale wing!!!

The grounds around the cottages are very well kept, the service is friendly, and the breakfast buffet every morning was outstanding!! Our room was cleaned everyday with fresh flowers left on the pillows. The bathroom was spacious with a big closet for luggage and a nice deep tub perfect for soaking. Probably our favorite part of the whole trip was being so close to the beach. The southern part of Kaanapali is packed compared to the north part. We actually got married on the beach about 50 feet from our cottage, at sunset and there was maybe 10 people on the entire beach besides us!!

If you like moonlight strolls, the Sheraton at Black Rock is within walking distance (you follow the golf course path) where there are a couple of really excellent restaurants. We never ate at the Royal Lahaina other than for breakfast.

Overall, we would definately stay here again and again, as it was close enough to other resorts to enjoy the 'touristy' stuff, but secluded enough to feel like you're truly in paradise.

  • Liked — The beach, the breakfast
  • Disliked — Poor guests in the Hale wing
  • Tips/Secrets — If you can't afford a cottage, consider another resort.

Spent 5 nights here on a honeymoon in November 2002 in the Royal Hale tower section. The room was just ok, partial ocean view room. Room just seemed a bit old and over priced.

Pool area, beach and grounds were all nice though. You will need a car to get around though.

Would say a 3 star property.

Maui though - was awesome!

Wouldnt stay there again, think you could get a nicer place for same value.

We stayed here over the 4th holidays and we didn't regret it one time. My wife and I would stay here again in a heart beat. We still have the enlarged photo of one of the most beautiful sunsets we have ever seen the photo was taken from the Royal Lahaina beach front. The food was great and the people were very friendly, the location was great & was close to all of the attractions in Lahaina. ALOHA

  • Liked — The Beautiful Sunsets from our room
  • Disliked — Needs to be updated, great room just need some updateing (Internet, decor)
  • Tips/Secrets — Do the Lahaina Laua, ask where the Locals eat and be sure to eat their. The Hard Rock in Lahaina has a good view great food and beautiful sidewalk tables

We booked the Royal LaHaina on Maui with the expectations that we would be in a wonderful hotel on the beach and we paid the money to match this expectation. This hotel and their service left much to be desired. The check in and check out is slow and antiquated and during check out I found that the billing was incorrect. This hotels also charges for every "extra" including parking, beach chairs, sports equipment, etc.
In addition, major renovation was occuring during the time of our stay and we did not have any advance notice of this. On the one full day we were there, the air conditioning was turned off for the enitre day and that just added to the ambiance of drilling and hammering. The hotel manager did call to inform us of the air conditioning turn off but no attempt was ever made to compensate us for the inconvenience nor the disappointment with this hotel. I am exptremenly disappointed since many other fine hotels are also in this area.

On the up side, the food we ate there was very well done.

I am going back to Maui this year in Oct and I was trying to book this hotel however they are booked for my dates!! Very bummed. I traveled with my Mom when we went in 04 and during check in they gave us a room with one bed. The next day they upgraded us for free in a cottage right by the beach!! Finding out how much they cost after the trip I would have been dissapointed to stay in it because we could hear everything our neighbors were saying at 5am with those annoying beeping nextel phones! That was really hard to deal with. The walls are extemely thin for the price of 350 plus a night in those rooms! Thank god we were not next to honeymooners:) The accomodations were really clean with a mini fridge and generous bathroom so was the hotel and for the price and location being in Whalers village was awsome! The beach is sooo convient and way better than the other side by black rock because it was very crowded. Its fun to have all those restaurants and a mall less than one mile away! I do recommend this area over waliea and kihea. There is a lot more action with Lahina and Whalers village being so close and a safeway 3 mins away! BUt do take a rental car visit the beaches down that way. I booked my trip this year at the hotel next door called Maui villas so that I can enjoy the same beach again and area! I am a very picky travler and wanting to go back says something!

We stayed at the Royal Lahaina Resort over Easter Vacation. We had a hard time finding something affordable due to the holiday. The package with the Royal Lahaina was in our price range and in a good location on the island. We were a bit apprehensive due to the reviews. Also, I work for a resort and travel and stay in Hiltons and Hyatts etc. and can get picky.

The Royal Lahaina very pleasantly surprised us. It was very reminiscent of Hawaii Five-O, the Brady Hawian Vacation Episode and Magnum P.I. We stayed in the motel style accommodations. We had a great view of the beach from hour lanai and it was very quiet. We had adjoining rooms and the rooms were large and very clean. We were very happy with the housekeeping. I can see that for some people the layout of the rooms (only a small shower) would be old and the furniture outdated. But the beds were very comfortable and we slept very well.

The location to Black Rock was great for snorkeling and crowded (to be expected). The beach in front of the Royal Lahaina was great and we went swimming a lot.

The prices for the food were fine with us but we live in a resort town and are used to higher prices. We ate at the restaurant at the hotel a few times. We really liked the Comfort Zone (I think that is the right name) in the strip mall up the street. We tried it towards the end of our vacation and wished we had found it earlier.

The only thing were we unhappy with was the day spa. They cancelled our couples massage 1/2 hour before it was scheduled and we stayed at the hotel all morning because of the appointment. I would go somewhere else.

Overall we were really happy with the Royal Lahaina. It was clean, large, comfortable and the staff was nice. I would recommend it to my friends. You can not beat the price and the location.

Experience a piece of Ka'anpali history before it is GONE! A local friend helped us with the reservations and we were very impressed! Too bad the place is scheduled for demolition, soon.

The other less favorable reviews might be correct, but if you want to experience how Maui used to be, then you should rush to make a reservation before it is gone. The place feels real!

The tower is already in the midst of a major makeover, but the cottages are charming and spacious. The outdoor lanais feel like you're in your own backyard...if you lived in Maui. The service was friendly and accomodating. Our shower drain backed up, so we called and the engineer was over in ten minutes to fix the problem.

The bar "Don the Beachcomber" is definitely a DO NOT MISS! Campy decor with decent cocktails. Buy the services package that includes daily parking, free local telephone calls, in room safe, and TWO "Mai Tai's" (the bartenders might make a substitution)

It is a shame that the character is going to be bulldozed, soon.
