Good points about the hotel: Relatively small, great beach access, good bar. Bad points: The rooms are far from plush and can be very loud.
Make sure you do not stay in any rooms near the elevator. The elevators make a loud screeching noise which can be heard in the room. Once I got moved to another room, I had a bad experience. The alarm in the room next to mine had been left on, and it went off at 4:45 AM. It took three calls to the front desk to get it turned off. Very unpleasant.

Stayed at the Royal Lahaina 11/21/03 -11/26/03. Great Hotel for the price($112/night). It's an older hotel, rooms were very clean, and very comfortable. Upon arriaval we were upgraded from the Hale Garden, to the main tower. Everyone was friendly. Only ate breakfeast at the hotel, when I'm on vacation I eat some place different every night!!
Rooms are a little out dated so are the pool areas(no water slide!!) The beach area is beautiful and the views breathtaking!!..I would definately reccommend satyong here.

The only reason that I am rating this hotel "Above Average" is because we were upgraded to a bungalow room on our second night. My wife and I have been to Maui five times and we have stayed at the Ritz, Sheraton and Marriott hotels. The Royal Lahaina is definitely not on the same level as any of these hotels however it does have some redeeming values.

First of all it costs much less to stay at the Royal Lahaina than the other three hotels. Over all you can stay a week at the Royal Lahaina for half the cost of the other hotels. The room charges are much less and the food was pretty good and priced less than you would pay at the more expensive hotels. Secondly if you like a low key out of the way atmosphere with allot of room to stretch out then you have come to the right place.

The hotel seems to be one of the older hotels in the area and does not offer the large pools and overly impressive landscaping that the newer hotels offer and is in need of some remodeling. However you are not crowed and packed in like you are at the fancier hotels.

The Royal Lahaina grounds are lush and spacious and the beach is very nice. Most of the staff is courteous and helpful with the exception of a few of the male waiters in the restaurant and bar and one or two of the front desk staff. I can't say much for the main tower rooms but our bungalow was great. It was spacious and clean and had a nice covered patio that faced towards the ocean.

Overall we enjoyed our stay at the Royal Lahaina. We recommend the hotel on the basis of its lower cost and its low-key atmosphere. If you want to save money and do not require all of the flash and hype of the fancier hotels on the island then The Royal Lahaina is the place to stay. However, take care when booking your stay and choose your rooms carefully. Some lodging areas of the hotel are much less desirable than others. We would definitely return to this hotel but only if we could stay in one of the Bungalow rooms.

Stayed at the Royal Lahaina Resort in mid-November 2003 and thought it was a pleasant place to stay. It's not a 5-star resort, but then again, it was good deal for the money ($105/night for us, double occupancy).
Considering that we had an oceanview from our room terrace, we got a good deal. Had no problems with the hotel staff or the room itself.
either.

Just be sure to stay at the newest building on the resort grounds, which is where we stayed. The newer building doesn't have the "problems" of the older one. The newer building is the tall one. I hear the "older" building is the one that is not as nice and seems to be generating the most complaints from reviewers.

Enjoy your stay.

The Royal Lahaina Resort is the most beautiful hotel I have ever seen. There are the most stunning murals on the walls in the reception area. The dining room looks out onto the gardens on one side & the swimming pool on another. There are trees & flowers of all descriptions in the grounds which are excellently maintained. Even the laundry room, which is in a building on its own has scented trees & bushes around it.
The pools are exceptionally clean & the beach is about 30 seconds walk from the Royal Ocean Terrace bar.Even in the toilets there are fresh flowers every day.Without exception, the staff are all really friendly & helpful, especially Elena & Aunty Lei on the Hawaii Activities desk.
All the rooms are spotlessly clean & the cleaning ladies are very friendly. There is a breakfast buffet every morning, but you can also order seperately if you don't want the buffet. There is always a very wide selection for the evening buffets, but again, you can order seperately from the menu if you wish. The food is unbelievably good. The shops at the hotel are very reasonably priced. There is a free shuttle to take you to the local shopping centre and back every hour. There are local people selling souvenirs they have made in the foyer every moring, but there is no pressure to buy anything. We got married in Hawaii, and the management sent a bottle of champagne to our room, and also on the morning of the wedding, the staff sent up leis for myself & my daughter to wear.Very unexpected & very much appreciated. If I was to go back to Hawaii, I would choose the Royal Lahaina Resort every time.K Tiller

My wife and I stayed here for 8 nights in May '03. Choosing to stay here depends on the vacation you want. We spent most of our time exploring Maui or at one of the various beaches, so the price and quality of this hotel worked well for us. The more lavish (and much more expensive) hotels to the south would have been wasted on us. We chose to save money on the hotel so we could spend it elsewhere. The room was fine and the view outstanding, but the bathtub was a joke and the bathroom doors needed replacing. The beach in front of the hotel is nicer than much of the area further south, which we took full advantage of. Did not eat at the Hotel other than breakfast, which tasted fine and was part of our package. The Mariott Luau was better.

We would consider staying here again, but would probably look elsewhere first.

We spent a week at the Royal Lahaina Nov 1 to 8. We had a very good time and were completely satisfied with our stay there. We stayed in the main tower on the 3rd floor. We booked with with Pleasant Hawaiian.
Air- (S.F. - Maui, nonstop both directions by the way) rental car and room was $1,005.00 each. After air and car are subtracted that works out to about $140.00 per night for the room. You'd be hard pressed to find any of the other Kaanapali resorts for less than $250.00 per night. Most are around $300.00 I believe. Our room faced north and had a nice view of the sea. The room was fine, everything worked and it was quiet and comfortable. A few ants in the bathroom, so what, it's the tropics. Good tennis facilities, they set up three games for me, $10.00 per day. Parking wasn't as bad as other claim. All these resorts charge a daily fee now for parking etc. We didn't eat at the hotel much but what we did eat was perfectly OK. Nice happy hour at Sunset. Didn't encounter rudeness,...no obsequiousness either. You get what you give.
If you expect kowtowing and glassy eyed phony grins from the staff, go somewhere else. Everyone was perfectly nice and friendly. The location is unbeatable for West Maui/Kaanapali. The beach is BETTER than the two most southern expensive resorts in south Kaanapali. As of right now, they have no beaches at all, just sand bags. There is a lovely path next to the golf course on the shore through the Sheraton to the Whaler shopping center, about a 15 minute stroll. A beautuful walk and very convenient. The grounds are big and beautiful and the pools are basic.
No water features, slides or pirate ships. No tuxedoed waiters waiding in to bring your drink on a silver salver. No one to spritz you with cooling spray should your precious self be a bit warm. Just a great value in a great location. Oh yeah, gee wiz, the elevator interior needs some work. That's sure to keep me away next time. I've been to the 4 major islands, fourth trip to Maui. Not an expert on Hawaii but I earn my money and see no reason the waste it. Enjoy your trip
