“Best place to get away from the shoppers and rush!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2008

After 31 years, the cove is still the same in so many way but nicely upgraded as well. I weas there as a 12 year old and just came back from a trip there 31 years later. The best place to come back to after sight seeing or shopping. It`s away from the busy areas yet close to all. Lahaina, Ka`anapali. Kapalua and all.
Overly friendly and helpfull managaers and Dave and Mel who do a great job keeping the yards clean and running etc...
Ours kids had agreat time and we even got comments on how nice they were, I think there were a couple of kids who weren`t well taken though as they were noisy and screaming a bit , but kids will be kids, think that is up to parents to quiet them down a bit, ours want to go back again so you never know...

Miss it there already!

Aloha Betty and Su ! and Mahalo

  • Liked — Quiet, food and restaurants close by. Small more private atmospherte.
  • Disliked — Well, maybe a bigger pool is the only thing, but not a nescessity with the snorkelling right there really.

We stayed in condo 217 and booked it directly through the owner at www.seanskitravel.com. The property is kept up very well with a beautiful pool area next to a private cove. The cove has some really great snorkeling with a bunch of HUGE turtles. The water was a little murky because it was windy while we were there, but I've never seen turtles so big...

There is also shared use of 3 really nice gas grills, plenty of parking, and Tiki torches that light the place up at night. It is also a very short walk to the Napili beach that has good snorkeling and boogie boarding on top of a great sandy area to sunbathe in.

Now for our unit...

It had 2 bedrooms, one with a king bed and one with two twins. It also had a loft with a queen bed and its own bathroom. We were staying with 5 people and had plenty of room. The kitchen was fully stocked with pots and pans, a microwave, fridge/freezer with built in water/ice dispenser.

Our unit was likely bought in the early 1980's and the decor has not been updated since then, complete with brown carpet, pastel furniture, etc.. There is only air conditioning in the master beadroom, so the rest of the place has to be cooled down by opening the windows and using the fans. While that does work to cool it down, it makes the noise from others (like talking, crying babies, road noise etc.) very noticeable. We were woken up most mornings by noise. I think most of this depends on the unit, as they are independently owned and we noticed that many other units were more modern.

It is also about 6 miles north of Lahaina, and it takes about 10-15 minutes to go back and forth. There is a really nice market and strip mall about 1/2 mile down the road though that is very convenient for meals, coffee, and last minute groceries.

We would definitely consider staying here again, but will likely look for someplace farther south. Especially because the weather was windy while we were there and apparantly it is much windier up by Napili than it is down closer to Lahaina, like at Ka'anapali.

If you're looking for a relaxing area away from the big resorts and are primarily wanting to be in the water (especially snorkeling) then I would highly recommend Honokeana cove.

Weather- there were storms over the entire island in Dec. We saw pictures of flooding in Kihei on Maui News.

Unit- carpeting has been replaced 3 times since the 80's. In fact new in 2007. Living room furniture replaced twice since the 80's and recovered winter 2006-07.

Noise- Office is very helpful in solving noise problems if told which unit is causing the noise. 217 is only unit with any AC.

Hey, thanks for the comments.

Actually, it's in Napili which is 15 minutes north of Lahaina and is MUCH nicer than Lahaina.

Pros:
-We had a great fully equipped condo
-Waterfront
-Clean complex
-Friendly management
-Relaxed atmosphere
-Laundry facility on site
-Excellent neighborhood
-Close to everything in West Maui (within 15 min drive)
-Farmer's Market is down the road
and grocery store and snorkel gear rental companies are walking distance
-Next door to Gazebo Restaurant (best cocomac pancakes)
-Property faces Turtle Cove, meaning great snorkeling and turtles to swim with every single day right outside of your room
-Next door to Napili and Kapalua beaches (very nice, more secluded beaches)

Cons:
-Each condo is different and independently owned. Not really a con, but our experience might be different than yours, so just double check on what the condo looks like and what's included.
-Not quite sure if any of the condos have A/C, but then you don't necessarily stay at a waterfront site in tropical Hawaii because you want to stay cold.

Caveats:
-While we were there, we liked the more mature atmosphere. Please respect the entire community there. Everyone was pleasant and eventually ends up snorkeling with you at some point.
-If possible, book a condo where the lanai faces west instead of south because they get less direct sunlight, unless, of course, you prefer more sun.

We arrived early after an early flight from California. We were easily checked in and encouraged to relax and get settled in. The condo was fully furnished with all amenities necessary. The unit included snorkel gear and boogie boards.

The grounds and property are immaculate. The grounds include a pool and three barbeques. Any condo problems were quickly corrected by the property managers who were eager to please.

The sunsets and snorkeling at this complex cannot be beat. Each day you can easily view from 3 to 8 turtles swimming in the cove as well as the many numerous fish. The cove is nice since there are not more than maybe 10 people in the entire cove at any one time.

This condo is the perfect location for anyone looking for a peaceful and relaxing vacation, with easy access to the islands many attractions. We will go back.
Aloha

We had the most wonderful time here! Came here a day early from our nightmare condo in South Kihei. We had booked last year and counted our blessings to have found this place. Our unit was tidy, and quiet since the surrounding units were not yet occupied. (Later things did get just a little noisy when others moved in). Su in the office does a great job keeping the place in order. Our unit was so well cared for and supplied, I felt like I was staying at a friend's house. And we respected it as such. Some units did not look as nice as ours, and some were being rennovated. These condos are mainly owned by retirees and may not be well suited for kids in the winter months. If you plan on bringing children then, you may want to rethink your timing, or try Outrigger Napili Shores two complexes away. We had the best time here and enjoyed the West part of the island far better than the south.

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 27, 2007

Just returned from 6 days on Maui, and stayed 5 nights at the Honokeana Cove Condos. I have been to Maui more than 6 times, but this was our first time staying here. We were in condo #105, a 2 bedroom 2 bath first floor oceanfront unit.

The location is amazing. If you are looking for a low key, non glitzy, relaxing vacation, Honokeana Cove is hard to beat. Betty and Sue at the front desk were very friendly and accommodating. We were able to get a relaxed late check out, which was really great. It was amazing to wake up in the morning and walk a few steps into the beautiful, calm cove. We love Napili Bay, and often walked over there as well.

Noise and Mold Problems
The walls are thin as paper, and we could hear many people walking and talking, including our neighbor on his cell phone every morning at around 5am. The bedrooms are at the back of the unit, and we heard a lot of outside noise constantly.

The interior of the condo #105 was not great. The walls are super thin, allowing no sound privacy within the unit. The refrigerator extends into the closet in the second bedroom, and was noisy in that bedroom throughout the day and night. It was nice to have 2 bathrooms, but the master bath was teeny tiny, with a very small shower, and no place to set your soap, shampoo, etc.. The little ledge was ridged, so anything other than a small single bar of soap immediately fell off. The other bathroom was a small standard size, with a small bathtub whose fill/drain mechanism didn't work, so we had to pull the metal piece out to drain the tub, and then put it back in when we wanted a bath. A power drill and some tools were left on the kitchen table when we arrived. The garbage disposal didn't work, and when we pointed it out to the repair person, he scolded us as if we had done something wrong, which we had not, as it didn't work the very first time we tried it. The very narrow kitchen had a working dishwasher. There were a couple of pepper grinders that didn't work, the knives were super dull, etc., so it's not well maintained and it's not a great kitchen for people who like to cook.

The worst part, besides the noise, was the mold. The back bedroom was so noisy and moldy that it was impossible to sleep in there, so we dragged the mattress into the living room. I left a pashmina scarf in the closet, and it got too moldy for me to wear without washing it first. The dresser was also moldy, although for some reason the top drawer was a little less moldy than the other drawers. So, we used the top drawer only, hung some of our clothes, then left the closet door open with the fan on, moved the bed, and then used the box springs to store the rest of our clothing.

The first night we didn't get much sleep due to the noise. The next night we moved our mattress to the living room, facing the cove and hearing the waves. It was wonderful for us, but less so for the other 2 guests who were sleeping in a noisy back room and then had to walk around the mattress in the living room.

On the third or fourth night, the wind blew the screen door off of its tracks in the living room at about 3am, waking us again. We tried as best we could to quietly fix it good enough to hold out until morning. We had not yet calledfor repair, but at about 6:45am, the repair man showed up and started working on it - while we were laying there sleeping, literally a few inches away from the screen door! We were shocked, but fell back asleep after he left. He returned again later in the morning, and then sent another person to fix it later in the day, so it was a bit of an intrusion throuout the day, but seemed to work okay after that.

In the meantime... the weather was perfect, and the cove is a gem. We saw sea turtles every day from the lanai, and did get in the water with them some, although we felt concerned for them, with a bunch of people hovering around them all the time. It would be nice if the owners/managers of the property educated the guests on wildlife respect. For example, it's best to stay a certain distance away, and not to hover over them if they are under water, as they may not come back up for air and as a result die. We even saw a man repeatedly swimming in the cove with his dog, at which point the turtles naturally went elsewhere. Not sure if he was a local or a guest, but it was sad to see such a lack of awareness.

We really enjoyed the shady retreat of our lanai, and noticed that the units that were facing west had their shades drawn throughout the afternoon, as the sun was too strong. We faced north, and didn't have this problem.

The pool was small but nice for a little dip here and there. There are posted pool rules, as noted by other reviewers. I was glad to have the atmosphere of joyful peacefulness preserved. One of the rules is that the kids get full range all day, and then from 6-8pm, it's adults only, which I really appreciated. Unfortunately, this rule was never observed, and as I didn't want to be grumpy lady, I mostly just stayed away from the pool. If it were larger, this wouldn't be an issue, but it's a very small pool, so not room enough for a kids' area and an adults' arear. Office hours end at 5pm, so there wasn't much that could be done. I am all for the little ones enjoying themselves, but also think that a 2 hour adults only window of time is fair and reasonable.

Again, the cove was terrific, and the area - outside of the condo - relaxing. I would consider returning to this property again, but not to this unit, due to the noise and mold. The area is great but the condo is not up to par, especially for the price.

This is in regards to the mold described by a guest in one of our units. When someones checks in at the office,we intially ask them to let us know if there is any problems to please let us know. It is a shame that this guest did not bring this matter to the office regarding the mold problem. We would have addressed it immediately. We have not had any other complaints regarding this problem and this is a very popular unit and was rented the whole month of april. I am sorry that this guest did not let the Rental Manager know when he first arrived. We are here to service our guests the best way we can.

This place is Not family friendly---as a matter of fact, the condo owners here seem to actively dislike children. We used to stay at Honokeana Cove every year since the 1980's, but the residents have steadily become grumpier each time. We brought kids (ages 10 & 12) here 2 years ago for a 3-generation family reunion, and they were yelled at for playing in the pool, for playing frisbee, for chasing geckos. So we've begun staying next door at Napili Point (which is fabulous and welcoming). When we first began staying at H.C. nearly twent years ago, local fisherman would walk the rocks of the cove to throw their nets, residents of the town would come & go to snorkel or surf, and we'd walk back & forth to N.P. to watch the sunset, and N.P. visitors would come over for easy access to the water. Now H.C. has blocked access to and from the shoreline for anyone not staying here--it started a few years ago with locking the gate adjoining the two properties and this year it's to the point of stationing a security guard at the entrance! No local color, no aloha. When I last stayed here 2 years ago, I invited an 80 year-old friend whom I'd met on my morning walks to be my guest & snorkel at H.C. She walks with canes, and thus can not stay at H.C. because all condos (even ground level) require climbing stairs. Now she will not have access to snorkeling the cove, or likely snorkeling at all. The cove has the gentlest water access anywhere on Maui, perfect for elderly, children, or differently-abled, of whom only the elderly are welcome to stay here. But you wouldn't want to stay here anyway---the residents are clique-ish, gossipy and very tan. We will never return to stay at these condos (and we're not welcome to return to snorkel.) It saddens my heart to see what mainlanders have done to the spirit of aloha.

I was quite disturbed by these comments about our property. At Honokeana Cove we have a 77% return guest occuppancy. During different parts of the year the Cove takes on different flavors, as I like to call it. During the winter months of January, February and march we entertain a clientel of older visitors who have been coming to the Cove for the past 25 years. They enjoy the quiet atmosphere with no children around. Then, around spring break, summertime, thanksgiving and Christmas, we have our families here and the climate of noise and activity changes. The owners of the Cove love to have this diversity that is offered to all of their guests. So, it is important to plan your vacation around the right flavor of the Cove. In regards to the locked gate...it is not our gate. It belongs to our neighboring property, Napili Point. They lock the gate to keep our guests out of their property. I have managed the Cove for the past 14 years and I take pride in extending the "Aloha" spirit to each and every guest here at Honokeana Cove. I have lived on Maui for 37 years and that is why I live "Aloha".
