We just returned from a 7 night stay at the Sands. Great hotel in terms of location, close to Lahaina and Front street. Nice beach right at the resort. The resort itself is a little older but it's not run down by any means. There are BBQ grills all over the property so make sure you stop at Costco when your plane lands and pick up some food to grill. You definitely need a car in Maui. The Sands is really noisy. It seems like the noise echoes through the halls. Fortunately, I'm a heavy sleeper so I wasn't really bothered by it but I could see how some people might get a bit upset. Be patient. There is no A/C. We went during Sept 9-16th and we didn't need A/C. There are ceiling fans in all of the rooms and the island breeze is constant. I'd say it's about 82 during the day and 68-72 at night. Perfect for me anyway. You should go to Dollie's across the street for pizza. Excellent pizza and fair prices - $24 for a large. All in all it was a great trip. Take the Haleakala bike tour. It's worth the 2am wake up call. Take the road to Hana only if you don't get car sick. It's very windy and a little scary for the squeamish. 600 curves and 54 one lane bridges. Eat at the Hula Grill. If you eat at the sandy bar area, the prices are much cheaper. They have a more upscale area right next to the bar area but the prices are a little higher. Great coffee right around the corner from the Sands. Theres a coffee shop in the McDonalds plaza around the corner.
