“Nohonani is perfect. Fantastic Views and Nice Beach.”

We had 4 condos between 10 of us. 2 were rented from Aloha Condos (102 and 103), and 2 (201 and 303) were from Nohonani directly. The 2 units from Nohonani were nicer than the others. Recently updated, nicely appointed, fantastic views! Blue Robinson was a pleasure to work with getting our rentals. We had a great family reunion here. Snorkeling on our "private" beach with the turtles, basking in the sun. The waves can be very loud at night. (a few in our group complained about that)

Great condo, awesome views, nice pool and beach but bring water shoes as there are sharp rocks in the ocean, big enough for an extended family, only downside was a really slow elevator

This condominium has it all - nice beach for snorkeling or lounging, beautiful views from all bedrooms, living/dining room and lanai and the constant sound of the surf. The location, 5 or 6 miles from Lahaina, is perfect and far enough away from the huge hotels and condominiums on Kaanapali. The kitchen was well furnished but we ate out most of the time. If we'd spent more time we probably would have cooked more of our meals. There are other beautiful beaches within a 10 or 15 minute drive if you're looking specifically for paddleboarding, surfing or snorkeling. There is a market about 2 blocks away where you can buy groceries, coffee, clothing, fresh produce, or rent snorkel/paddleboard/surfing equipment. There is also a larger shopping strip about 5 minutes away by car, and Lahaina is about a 10 minute drive.

My wife and I found Nohonani #403 on the internet as we planned our trip. We traveled from Kansas with our two children and both of our mothers. Upon arrival we quickly realized that we had found a wonderful place to spend our week in Maui. The condo was well equipped and in a perfect location. While it showed some signs of wear, we found the condo to be a comfortable home on the beach. The beach towels and boogie boards provided saved us from having to rent or bring those beach necessities. Not only was it great to have the beach just outside our back door, the complex was close enough to walk to the Farmer's Market down the street for a smoothie or to the ABC store for supplies. The Times Supermarket was less than a mile away and several wonderful public beaches were a short drive. Still, Nohonani Condos are located away from the big crowds and heavy traffic of the large hotel/condo complexes. We also enjoyed using the BBQ grills next to the pool/beach and the turtles made several visits during our week in paradise.

My family and I came to the Nohonani in 1985 and have been coming back as often as possible ever since. Blue, the amazing manager, has always made sure that we had everything we needed. Actually, with the ocean and the beach right outside your sliding door, who needs much more? Every condo has an ocean view and the Nohonani is one of the only condo complexes with a beach. The ability to sun on the sand on a comfy lounge, take a dip in the warm ocean steps away, listen to the ocean as you read a good book or hop into the pool right over the sea wall when you would like to cool off is priceless. This trip we saw tons of sea turtles and one actually came up on the sand right at my feet! Amazing! I cannot say enough about the Noho as we "regulars" call it. I tried to keep it a secret; but all my friends and family love it now too. If you want all the expensive bells and whistles and the price tag that goes along with it, the the Nohonani is not for you. If you want comfort, beauty, relaxation and great people in a 60's throwback resort, than come on down to the "Noho". Cannot beat the price either. Just left, but counting the days until we can come back. Enjoy-you won't regret it. Aloha! Maui no kai oi !

I should start this review by saying I have been visiting Hawaii since 2001, and know full when that when it comes to self-catering condominiums you get what you pay for, and some of it is the luck of the draw. On that basis I have tried to be as fair as I can in my review of this complex.

Starting with the good points:
* It is, as others have said, as close as you can get to the beach. Unit 103 is obviously on the ground floor and is two steps from a stone wall separating the complex from a short but passable sandy area. If you stay in 103 you can pretty much guarantee you will have a small area of beach to yourself.
* Views of Molokai and Lanai are fantastic at all times of the day - the same can be said of almost any property along this stretch of the coast however I do feel it adds some value to a stay here.
* The bedrooms in all units are ocean facing, which is a blessing or a curse depending on how you look at it, but I prefer to listen to the ocean at night rather than the traffic.
* The lanai is well appointed with a table and four chairs, and a sun lounger of your own - this seems to be standard for all units. Blinds seem to be optional here, but unit 103 comes with two roller blinds for the sunny period (1PM to 4PM). Curtains are used inside - I would have preferred louvre blinds but there you go.
* Although the layout takes a little bit of getting used to, the condo is relatively spacious and air flow is good.
* So far we have seen many turtles, a shark and a couple of whales from the condo. Anyone who has been here in whale season will appreciate the value of this - but the turtle sightings it should be noted are limited to the occasional fin or head - they don't leave the water.
* Proximity to the park and shops is good for a condo of this price.

And then the many bad points...:
* There is virtually no privacy in this unit. The pictures on the website give the impression this unit is relatively private - it is absolutely not. The pathway directly outside the condo leads to units 102 and 101, and then to the "gardens" which run round to the front of the complex so you are guaranteed to have people passing by all day long - people who don't have a problem staring into your unit as they pass by. The tap for rinsing yourself after swimming/going to the beach is almost right outside the lanai and gets heavy use - so it's noisy too. Likewise the gate to the beach is next to that and receives a lot of traffic - many residents don't seem to understand the concept of latches and just let the gate slam as they pass through.
* On the subject of noise, the other end of the condo where the front door is, is directly opposite the laundry room (not too noisy) and the main gate (very noisy, and again slammed at all hours).
* There are two barbecues on site - one in the corner by the pool which is easily and frequently monopolised, and the other you wouldn't be able to find unless you were specifically looking for it, at the other corner of the complex - that one is quieter but directly outside unit 101 so you can only really use if they're not in or if you don't care about them having to smell your cooking.
* Bedding and towels provided were clean and plentiful, kitchen equipment the exact opposite - it looks as if the utensils here have been provided partly by previous occupants and some basics - such as a rolling pin or a kettle - are missing entirely.
* We were warned that there have been burglaries around this area recently, which means you can't leave the doors open at night for airflow, likewise some residents like to "roam" at night which will keep you awake if you are easily disturbed or worried about intruders.
* The safe in unit 103 does not work and actually seems to be a health hazard (the power cable has been crushed under the safe) and so there is no way to secure valuables.
* Some delivery companies won't come here - I was told by FedEx that they aren't allowed to attend condos and that the front desk (the infamous Blu) won't sign for anything, so items would be returned. Be warned before considering ordering anything from online retailers.
* The gardeners here are particularly surly - one in particular chose to fire up a gas powered leaf blower and use it on the patch of grass in front of our unit right as we were settling down for lunch, with the doors open.
* Cleaners don't seem to exist here - the unit was basically clean but the bedroom and bathroom had way too many dust bunnies and long dark hairs for my liking - even in the shower. There was a dead spider by the toilet.
* Laundry costs 75c, dryer 50c. Make sure you stock up on quarters as there is no change machine here, though ABC stores down the road are happy to accommodate.
* The freezer unit of the refrigerator is small - small enough that it can't handle a standard sized pizza box, so plan accordingly for your groceries. Likewise the oven doesn't seem to function properly so plan extra time for baked food.
* Maintenance here is low - pretty much everything needs some oil applied to it and many of the window slats don't close properly or are just plain broken. The "site manager" has yet to be seen, I believe he is the guy locked in the main office with the blinds down but I can't be sure.
* Internet access, unlike other units here, is limited to a single wired connection which requires a login before each use.
* In an attempt to make the unit feel bigger, mirrors have been placed everywhere. As a result the unit does feel bigger, until you try to use the dining table with four people and realise you would have to move the table and block the kitchen entrance to do so - which is already so small it can only hold one person cooking at a time.

All in all Nohonani isn't a bad complex, it's not a great one either. For the money we paid (relatively fair through Maui Lodgings, who let you choose your condo number) the unit offered reasonable facilities; but I do believe other properties on this strip would be better (I would have been at Makani Sands had my unit not been booked out on the dates I wanted).

My daughter and husband stayed here a few years ago and raved about it. We have been to Maui 3 times now and this is our first stay at Nohonani. It won't be our last. We could snorkel right in front of the condo if we chose. Quite often though,we drove to nearby Kapalua Bay or the Black Rock to snorkel...both only minutes away. The condo arrangements were made through a rental agent, Blu Robinson. She took care of all the details right down to mailing us a key to get in on our arrival as it was late at night. The condo was spacious , clean and had all the amenities. The view from the lanai is stunning!

It was only a 15 minute drive into Lahaina and it's wonderful shops and restaurants. Two of our favorites were Bubba Gumps restaurant and Warren and Annabelle's Magic show.
