Reviewed August 1, 2012

We've stayed at the Napili Surf for eight nights (our last night is tonight, unfortunately!). And I think I have a pretty good feel for the place.

First the overall: Napili Surf sits near the southern end of Napili Bay, a quarter-mile-long bay a few miles north of Ka'anapali on the northwest tip of Maui. It has about 48 (by my math) units in four buildings, and has studios, 1-BR and 2-BR condos with full, partial ocean views or one building with a "garden view." It sits on I'd guess about 3 acres. It's one of those places where the units are individually owned but they're rented as a resort/hotel.

The room: We stayed in #106, a one-bedroom, a ground-floor,partial-ocean view unit in the building closest to the shore. It was me, my spouse and my two young-teen sons. Our condo has a front room, a kitchen, a bathroom with shower only (no tub) and a bedroom with a king-size bed.The front room has two couches; one has a fold-out full-size bed, the other
a fold-out twin. So our boys didn't have to share a bed, which is a good thing!

The unit, like all units at Napili Surf, is not air-conditioned. Even though it's been in the 80s the whole time we've been here, it's never been uncomfortable, though. The rooms have ceiling fans that work well, as well as sliding doors that let the breeze through. And where Napili Bay sits, there is always a breeze (5-10mph) blowing.

The furnishings are fine and functional, nothing too fancy. The kitchen is very well stocked with cookware, cups, plates etc. The appliances are new and work well. Only downside to the kitchen is that the countertops are ceramic tile, and the grout is stained from coffee spills. Let me be clear-- the countertops are CLEAN and SANITARY. But again, coffee has soaked into the grout.

Another knock is that the bathroom is pretty small and doesn't have a tub; just a shower. Our unit, being at the end of its building (not the ocean-side end, unfortunately) has a lanai facing the grounds and a beautiful view of the bay, but also a second lanai that runs along the back of the building. We used the front lanai all the time; as I said, the view there is beautiful. On the other hand, we almost never used the side lanai, because, while it's surrounded by big, well-tended plants, the parking lot is on the other side of those plants. And, while the front lanai has a couple of nice tables and four good chairs, the side one has one old, kinda grimy table and two similar chairs.

There's a small flat-screen TV and a dvd player in the front room, and a TV in the bedroom; both have basic cable. There's also a little stereo/CD player.

The grounds/setting: This is where NS really shines. First, I'll start with Napili Bay and Beach itself. The beach/bay is about 1/4-miles long with a rocky point at either end. It's a fairly wide (maybe 30-35 yards from surf to seawall) beach with very nice, white/tan sand. There's a coral reef just outside the mouth of the bay, so surf never gets too heavy, but there's enough surf (especially right at the center of the beach) that makes it an excellent spot for body surfing and boogie boarding for kids. As you move out from the center 40 yards of the beach toward the north and south ends, the surf is much much calmer. Little children (preschoolers) can play in these areas without worry of getting knocked over. There's a coral point/tidepool area at the southern point of the bay that is excellent snorkeling area: calm water, lots of coral with various fish and eels and sea turtles, which was a real treat. During our visit, we swung by Ka'anapali Beach, Lahaina and Kapalua, and Napili Beach is absolutely the best of them for both how beautiful it is and how much fun it is to play there. There are no amenities on the beach, though there's a general store about a 50-yard walk from the center of the beach. All in all, it's an excellent beach for families.

Now, for the grounds of Napili Surf itself: It is absolutely the most well-tended prettiest, well-groomed place of the 7 or 8 properties ringing the bay. It has a wide variety of beautiful flowering plants throughout the property, a great green lawn, a very well-tended pool near the shore and another in the back area of the property. It has a little beach area of its own, separated from the public beach by a little hedge that makes a great place to sit and watch the beach. It also has two barbecue areas, both with very nice tables and high-end Weber gas grills for the guests to use. There is a coin-op laundry as well.

Now, what the resort does NOT have: It doesn't have any kind of food or beverage service -- no restaurant, no snack bar, no poolside cocktail bar, not even a candy machine. Neither does it have an exercise room or a rec room. And I think that's a conscious choice -- the rules at NS are such that they don't want you whooping it up by the pool or getting rowdy. Just not seeking that kind of clientele. You want food or drinks? You buy 'em yourself and stock up your fridge. There's no piped-in music around the pool, there's no hot tub, no spa, etc. There's even a rule that you're not supposed to use your cellphone outside of your own room.

There are restaurants at the Napili Kai resort at the far end of the beach and the famed Gazebo restaurant at the Napili Shores resort right next door to Napili Surf, and a little shopping mall maybe a half mile away that has a grocery store, a Thai and a barbecue joint. We did breakfast at the Gazebo one morning and you really do have to line up a half-hour before it opens to get in the first seating. But honestly, I didn't think the food there was any better than the Sea House at the other end (the restaurant at Napili Kai). Just past the Napili Kai, on the point right between Napili and Kapalua bays, is a place called Merriman's that is fantastic high-end dining for date night. Oh,and Kapalua Golf Course (where they've had PGA tournaments) is a 10-minute walk from the resort.

The service: As I mentioned before, this resort doesn't have any of those "pamper me" services that lots of people like. That said, the services they do provide -- from the maid service to the office service to the grounds-keeping -- is all top-rate. Everybody takes care of you, with a wide, welcoming smile. Room is fully cleanedaily. Twice during my trip a groundskeeper walked up and handed me fruit he'd just cut from trees on the property. How nice is that? On Wednesday nights, they have a mai-tai happy hour on the lawn, and on Friday mornings, donuts, coffee and fresh grilled bread and jam. Nice.

So -- to sum up: Napili Surf is an exceptionally well-cared-for property in a gorgeous setting. The condos are well-stocked and convenient though some things could stand a little updating. AC would be nice, but we did just fine without it. Staff is friendly and helpful. BUT -- if you want to be pampered, or you want to party, this isn't the place for you.

All in all, I'd say it's a fantastic place for families, mature couples and people wanting a quiet, relaxing plade to enjoy a beautiful spot on Maui. But again, f you want to be babied, or you want to party all night, you'd be better off someplace else.

Me, I'd come back in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: I liked being on the ground floor, because the grounds become like an extension of your lanai.

We stayed in a one bedroom unit with an ocean view. The resort is quiet and the beach access couldn't be easier. We were able to snorkel at this beach and right around the point is a great location to see the green sea turtles. While we cooked most of our meals, the Sea House is just a short walk up the beach if you need a restaurant. The unit was clean and stocked with everything we needed to cook and relax! Friday mornings there is a "coffee" gathering at 8:30 and on Wednesdays there is a "mai tai" mixer at 5:30. The best part was having the rooms cleaned every day! Housekeeping was efficient and usually had our room cleaned by 10 am! We will definitely stay here when we return!

We stayed for a week in May and it was absolutely wonderful. This is not the place for you if you want a big tourist style hotel which is not what my husband and I prefer. This place is quiet, cozy, clean, and a great value.

There are 4 buildings, two floors each and each unit is individually owned, but rented out through Napili Surf. They all have standard amenities, some studio and some one bedrooms.

We decided to save some money and stayed in the 4th building. It was very nice. Right outside our lanai was a pool. Then the beach was not more than 50 yards away. The property is very quiet and they even ask that guests refrain from talking on cell phones on the property to help keep it a relaxing environment.

They have Mai Tai night and Breakfast gathering once a week. The staff bring homemade jams, baked goods, appetizers and Mai Tais out for guests and everyone mingles about dusk.

We loved the picnic tables on the property positioned with a great bay view. Then there are several grills on the property so you can grill some food then enjoy it with a beautiful view.

**big tip: the popular Gazebo restaurant is just around the corner. Save yourself some time, call your order in, pick it up and bring it back to Napili Surf and dine on a picnic table or your own lanai. Skip the 1hr plus wait at the Gazebo, but enjoy the same delicious pancakes**

Room Tip: Stay in the 4th building to save half the price, you don't have a beach view, but you'll hav...

Napili Surf is an amazing place with amazing staff. This is our second trip back to Napili Surf. A close friend comes here every year and turned us on to this place. Scott is the best, kindest resort manager we've ever met in our travels. So, what makes this place amazing (in addition to Scott)?... The beach is right here, Napili Bay. A small bay with excellent swimming, snorkeling, and just relaxin' in the sun. We've been here 5 days so far and each day we swam with sea turtles just in front of the resort. A typical day is an early morning swim, breakfast, some reading, snorkeling, lunch, more snorkeling, shuffle board, reading, more snorkeling, then rest before dinner.... AMAZING SUNSETS! There's a reason why couples gather late in the day to get married right on the shores of the resort. Watching the sun set behind Molokai is a legal "high"..... Each week they have a mai-tai reception for the guests. On this visit a local Polynesian dance troupe of young students performed for us. What a treat!.... This is NOT a bustling part of the island. Napili is just up the road from Lahaina and Kaanapali, but it's a totally different world. It's quiet, and it's mellow. (I think that's why the turtles hang out here :-)

Excellent location, and amazing value for your money! We have found a new favorite spot (it won us over from our previous fav spot at 5 star hotel). The value for your money at this place makes Maui an affordable destination for years to come! We stayed 2 nights in a Garden Studio last December before heading back to our honeymoon spot at a 5 star on Wailea beach, but if we had known about this gem, we would not have left!! And we have saved the thousands we spend at the Grand Wailea ☺

We are beachfront vacationers and this place did not disappoint! We opted for the less $$ garden view rooms to save money. We were a few hundred yards from the ocean and right next Napili Bay, some of the best snorkeling on the island. Huge turtles! The buildings do look a bit dated from the outside, but the property location and convenience to snorkeling, great beaching and affordable meals make it well worth the 70’s décor you might find in your room.

Service is top notch! Very friendly and accommodating staff. We arrived late and our keys and accommodation info was waiting for us along with a personal welcome note on their board. The one bedroom studio was perfect for us. Fresh pineapple in the fridge when we arrived. Fresh towels whenever we needed them. The property provides kitchens and outdoor grills, but we opted to walk to dinner at the Sea Horse both nights. Really good food. Get there early to get a table and watch the sunset!

Our room did not have beach chairs, but we found a great place to rent them within walking distance. Very inexpensive. Pocket change compared to Wailea prices. We also picked up snorkel gear for the day once we discovered how AMAZING Napili Bay truly is (wish we would have paid the addition $15 -20 rental fee for the underwater camera – missed out on some fantastic pictures). It’s a bit choppy to get in the bay at some parts, but once you make it down, it’s worth the climb. Some of the best snorkeling on the island. We saw over half a dozen HUGE turtles swimming around. Lots of fish.

This place is great for anyone looking to save on $$ but not scrimp on experiencing all that Maui has to offer. We met lots of people of all ages waiting in line for the famous breakfast place, and everyone couldn’t say enough good things about this spot.

I can't say enough good things about this place. Don't miss the fresh pineapple in the fridge once you arrive. Free Wi-Fi is provided throughout, and the views are stunning. You will find some of the island's best snorkeling right in Napili bay and the bay adjacent. A quick drive to Honolua bay, where you'll see squid and octopus within 5 minutes of getting into the water. The staff is friendly, accommodating, and welcoming. This is a true gem on Maui.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view studio, to save a bit of money, but to have amazing views of the sea.
