We've stayed at the Napili Surf for eight nights (our last night is tonight, unfortunately!). And I think I have a pretty good feel for the place.
First the overall: Napili Surf sits near the southern end of Napili Bay, a quarter-mile-long bay a few miles north of Ka'anapali on the northwest tip of Maui. It has about 48 (by my math) units in four buildings, and has studios, 1-BR and 2-BR condos with full, partial ocean views or one building with a "garden view." It sits on I'd guess about 3 acres. It's one of those places where the units are individually owned but they're rented as a resort/hotel.
The room: We stayed in #106, a one-bedroom, a ground-floor,partial-ocean view unit in the building closest to the shore. It was me, my spouse and my two young-teen sons. Our condo has a front room, a kitchen, a bathroom with shower only (no tub) and a bedroom with a king-size bed.The front room has two couches; one has a fold-out full-size bed, the other
a fold-out twin. So our boys didn't have to share a bed, which is a good thing!
The unit, like all units at Napili Surf, is not air-conditioned. Even though it's been in the 80s the whole time we've been here, it's never been uncomfortable, though. The rooms have ceiling fans that work well, as well as sliding doors that let the breeze through. And where Napili Bay sits, there is always a breeze (5-10mph) blowing.
The furnishings are fine and functional, nothing too fancy. The kitchen is very well stocked with cookware, cups, plates etc. The appliances are new and work well. Only downside to the kitchen is that the countertops are ceramic tile, and the grout is stained from coffee spills. Let me be clear-- the countertops are CLEAN and SANITARY. But again, coffee has soaked into the grout.
Another knock is that the bathroom is pretty small and doesn't have a tub; just a shower. Our unit, being at the end of its building (not the ocean-side end, unfortunately) has a lanai facing the grounds and a beautiful view of the bay, but also a second lanai that runs along the back of the building. We used the front lanai all the time; as I said, the view there is beautiful. On the other hand, we almost never used the side lanai, because, while it's surrounded by big, well-tended plants, the parking lot is on the other side of those plants. And, while the front lanai has a couple of nice tables and four good chairs, the side one has one old, kinda grimy table and two similar chairs.
There's a small flat-screen TV and a dvd player in the front room, and a TV in the bedroom; both have basic cable. There's also a little stereo/CD player.
The grounds/setting: This is where NS really shines. First, I'll start with Napili Bay and Beach itself. The beach/bay is about 1/4-miles long with a rocky point at either end. It's a fairly wide (maybe 30-35 yards from surf to seawall) beach with very nice, white/tan sand. There's a coral reef just outside the mouth of the bay, so surf never gets too heavy, but there's enough surf (especially right at the center of the beach) that makes it an excellent spot for body surfing and boogie boarding for kids. As you move out from the center 40 yards of the beach toward the north and south ends, the surf is much much calmer. Little children (preschoolers) can play in these areas without worry of getting knocked over. There's a coral point/tidepool area at the southern point of the bay that is excellent snorkeling area: calm water, lots of coral with various fish and eels and sea turtles, which was a real treat. During our visit, we swung by Ka'anapali Beach, Lahaina and Kapalua, and Napili Beach is absolutely the best of them for both how beautiful it is and how much fun it is to play there. There are no amenities on the beach, though there's a general store about a 50-yard walk from the center of the beach. All in all, it's an excellent beach for families.
Now, for the grounds of Napili Surf itself: It is absolutely the most well-tended prettiest, well-groomed place of the 7 or 8 properties ringing the bay. It has a wide variety of beautiful flowering plants throughout the property, a great green lawn, a very well-tended pool near the shore and another in the back area of the property. It has a little beach area of its own, separated from the public beach by a little hedge that makes a great place to sit and watch the beach. It also has two barbecue areas, both with very nice tables and high-end Weber gas grills for the guests to use. There is a coin-op laundry as well.
Now, what the resort does NOT have: It doesn't have any kind of food or beverage service -- no restaurant, no snack bar, no poolside cocktail bar, not even a candy machine. Neither does it have an exercise room or a rec room. And I think that's a conscious choice -- the rules at NS are such that they don't want you whooping it up by the pool or getting rowdy. Just not seeking that kind of clientele. You want food or drinks? You buy 'em yourself and stock up your fridge. There's no piped-in music around the pool, there's no hot tub, no spa, etc. There's even a rule that you're not supposed to use your cellphone outside of your own room.
There are restaurants at the Napili Kai resort at the far end of the beach and the famed Gazebo restaurant at the Napili Shores resort right next door to Napili Surf, and a little shopping mall maybe a half mile away that has a grocery store, a Thai and a barbecue joint. We did breakfast at the Gazebo one morning and you really do have to line up a half-hour before it opens to get in the first seating. But honestly, I didn't think the food there was any better than the Sea House at the other end (the restaurant at Napili Kai). Just past the Napili Kai, on the point right between Napili and Kapalua bays, is a place called Merriman's that is fantastic high-end dining for date night. Oh,and Kapalua Golf Course (where they've had PGA tournaments) is a 10-minute walk from the resort.
The service: As I mentioned before, this resort doesn't have any of those "pamper me" services that lots of people like. That said, the services they do provide -- from the maid service to the office service to the grounds-keeping -- is all top-rate. Everybody takes care of you, with a wide, welcoming smile. Room is fully cleanedaily. Twice during my trip a groundskeeper walked up and handed me fruit he'd just cut from trees on the property. How nice is that? On Wednesday nights, they have a mai-tai happy hour on the lawn, and on Friday mornings, donuts, coffee and fresh grilled bread and jam. Nice.
So -- to sum up: Napili Surf is an exceptionally well-cared-for property in a gorgeous setting. The condos are well-stocked and convenient though some things could stand a little updating. AC would be nice, but we did just fine without it. Staff is friendly and helpful. BUT -- if you want to be pampered, or you want to party, this isn't the place for you.
All in all, I'd say it's a fantastic place for families, mature couples and people wanting a quiet, relaxing plade to enjoy a beautiful spot on Maui. But again, f you want to be babied, or you want to party all night, you'd be better off someplace else.
Me, I'd come back in a heartbeat.
