Aston Mahana at Kaanapali
Ranked #5 of 32 Hotels in Lahaina
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 2, 2013

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at this property. Our unit was a "premium" 2BR and was just superbly decorated and maintained. The place was spotlessly clean (kudos to the housekeeping staff) and all the furnishings were well-designed and up to date.

The view was extraordinary. We saw numerous whales from the deck and enjoyed beautiful views of Lanai and Molokai.

The beach is right outside the gate and is beautiful. There is quite a bit of coral along the beach here, but it's easy to avoid if you walk 100m or so in either direction. The surf is a bit rough here, so walking down past the larger coral rocks makes for more enjoyable snorkeling.

The location can't be beat...close enough to walk to many restaurants, including the Times grocery, yet unexpectedly quiet on the property.

The pool area is extremely nice...beautiful large pool and very nice large hot tub both of which we enjoyed several times each day.

One really nice thing for us is that this property is mostly an adult community. There were a few teenagers and younger kids present, but all were well-behaved. We did not see any unsupervised kids running about during out stay.

The only thing that kept me from giving this property 5 stars was the annoying "amenities fee" of $10.42 charged each day. Let me say kudos to the property managers for fully disclosing this up front both on their website and on the confirmation emails.....very professional handling of the matter, but why do this at all? We were paying several hundred dollars per day for our unit so why not just up the prices $10. Maybe it's just me, but somehow seeing it tacked on separately just seemed cheesy. To make it worse, they hand out a paper at check in telling you all the things you get for your $10....just standard stuff you'd expect to get at this price point - newspaper, one small serving of coffee, one tea bag, etc. My pursuit of one extra tea bag each day became a comical escapade for us. We stopped by the desk each day for my extra tea bag and although the hostesses at the desk cheerfully obliged it just seemed a silly thing to have to do. For ten bucks just put some coffee and tea in the room like nearly all hotels do these days.

By the way, one comment to help set expectations for other guests. This is a collection of privately owned condominiums. It is not a hotel. Consequently it does not have a doorman, bellman, no one to assist with luggage, no luggage carts etc. There is a front desk but just for checkin/checkout. The girls are polite, but you don't experience the welcoming feeling/greeting typically found at hotels.

One other very nice feature was the gas grills out by the pool. These are very nice upscale grills which make it really easy to cookout if one wishes.

Overall, we highly recommend this place and will definitely stay here again next time we are in the area.....a 5-star property with a silly $10 daily fee being the only negative assessment.

Aloha and mahalo for taking the time to let us know of your experience at the Aston Mahana, we're thrilled to hear that we exceeded your expectations.
While it is true that every unit here has a private owner, this is why in this type of condominium setting we can offer units with full kitchens and the guest can truly feel that they are in their home away from home. All of the guests in the Aston units here at the Mahana do enjoy the benefits of a 24 hour front desk, as well as daily housekeeping and maintenance staff on property to address any needs they may have. We're very happy to hear that you found the room to be spotless as it is our housekeeping staff's goal to make sure that all of our units are clean and comfortable for all of our guests.
While there is no bell staff here at the Mahana we do have luggage carts available for guest's use near both elevator landings. We do completely agree that the Mahana's location is perfect, the setting is quiet and private yet we are within easy walking or a short drive to many shopping and dining options here on the north end of Kaanapali.
Of course, the views from this area are some of the best in the world with all sorts of marine life and beautiful sunsets right appearing daily right between the neighboring islands of Molokai and Lanai. Every unit here is oceanfront so everyone enjoys these same breathtaking views and you can also get the same thing from our pool/jacuzzi/complimentary gas grill area or oceanfront lawn as well.
We do apologize for your disappointment with the amenity fee here at the Mahana but we do our best to of course make sure the guests know about ahead of time but also outline all of the things you receive with this cost. Use of the safe in the unit, local calls, daily replacement of the coffee, tea and laundry detergent and delivery of a daily newspaper are all included. The flagship of the program though is the unlimited use of the DVD Now kiosk located at the property where guests receive a card at check-in to get movies or games unlimited (2 at a time) during their entire stay utilizing the Play Station player located in all of our units.
Also, our property also does not charge for parking nor the high speed wi-fi internet access provided in each unit. We are sorry for your frustration with the fee but hope that our guests find great value in everything provided to them.
All of us here at the Aston Mahana though have a goal of showing the Aloha spirit to all of our guests and providing them with memorable experiences to return home with. We very much hope you will also choose to stay with us again.

Mahalo, Brian

The Aston Mahana is simply one of the best properties on the earth-or at least on Maui. On top of that, the management and staff are also top notch. We got a surprise visit from Santa and a present on Christmas-that was a nice touch. We requested a unit on an upper floor and got 1005. It was a "premium" unit, and it was wonderfully equipped-washing machine/dryer, dishwasher, oven, etc. with a fully furnished kitchen (pots, plates, silverware, etc.) This unit also had two restrooms; one for mom, and the other for my wife and I. The only thing lacking was a bathtub, but there was a jacuzzi next to the pool which normally wasn't very crowded and I found it to be a very comfortable place to relax in the evening.
The view was phenomenal. We were there during the whale watching season, and we could observe them frolicking throughout our stay from the room, in addition we could also see the occasional turtle swimming by. They distracted us from the wonderful views of the nearby islands.
The location is convenient for grocery shopping, Dukes restaurant (for one), swimming/snorkeling, golfing, etc. It is best to walk one or two hundred yards in either direction for swimming activities as there is a coral reef just in front of the property. I went snorkeling a few times and was very satisfied just staying in the area and not having to travel too far.
What made the stay so special was that my elderly mother seemed so very pleased being able to stay in such a gorgeous room/property.

Room Tip: Go for the premium room, higher up is most likely better, however I don't think you can go wrong...

Aloha and mahalo for taking the time to share your comments and we're thrilled to see that both you and your mother had a great time at the Aston Mahana. The top notch service provided by the staff here is our ultimate goal, we want every guest here to leave with lasting memories and thoughts of the Aloha spirit they receive from all of us here.
We very much agree that the oceanfront views from all of our well appointed and comfortable units, all with full kitchens, are spectacular with the back drop of the neighboring islands of Lanai and Molokai, beautiful sunsets and the marine life you described, sea turtles year round and humpback whales from December thru April or so.
Our pool area with jacuzzi tub and complimentary gas grills is also an excellent area in which to relax and check out the oceanfront scenery.
Our location on the northern end of Kaanapali beach is a perfect place to relax from the hustle and bustle yet we are still within walking distance from many shops and restaurants or a short drive away from the Whalers Village area of Kaanapali, downtown Lahaina or Kapalua.
We are honored by all of your comments and very much hope you can return to see us again real soon. Also very happy you were able to meet Santa personally during your stay.

The room was nice and had excellent views. We got a premium room. There was nothing wrong with it, but did expect more for the premium upgrade. It is a condo resort, so every room is different, but there was nothing out of the ordinary in ours. Our biggest issue is that the place is actually north of Kaanapali Beach and has rough coral in the waters in front of it. You must go a few hundred yards south of the hotel along the beach to have a decent area. We enjoy walking to places at night to dine. There is a decent beach walk from the hotel all the way to Kaanapali Beach, but this is a good 40 minute walk one way.

Mahana at Kaanapali IS on Kaanapali Beach. Kaanapali Beach is about 2.5 miles long. At the south end of Kaanapali Beach is Kaanapali Resort with the Hyatt, Westin and Sheraton hotels. At the north end of Kaanapali Beach are properties such as Honua Kai, Mahana at Kaanapali, Kaanapali Beach Club and Kaanapali Shores.

Directly in front of Mahana there is rock and coral in the water close to shore. But just 120 yards south (a 2 minute walk) is excellent swimming and snorkeling. Experienced snorkelers know it is some of the best snorkeling on Maui. 120 yards is less of a walk that from the lobby to the beach at the large hotels such as Hyatt or Sheraton.

First time to Maui and first time at Mahana. We couldn't have picked a better property. The premium room upgrade is worth the money. Wall to wall windows with views that go on for miles. The property literally sits at the edge of the water, the sound of the waves will lull you to sleep all night long. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Close to many shops, grocery and dining. The perfect home away for home, we thought this was an excellent value.

Room Tip: Opt for a premium room. Dining at Dukes next door is a convenient option. You can rent the best chai...

Aloha and mahalo for taking the time to comment on your recent stay. We really appreciate all of the nice things you had to say and are especially happy to hear you describe the service as being friendly and accommodating and the unit as your home away from home.
I think I'll just leave the rest of your comments to stand as they are and just say that, " Views to die for ! ", is a great way to sum up the Aston Mahana.

Mahalo again for choosing the Aston Mahana and we very much look forward to your next visit. Have a safe and happy new year.

This is the first time we stayed at the Aston Mahana for the past three trips we stayed at Kapalua but I ended up booking this trip at the last minute and could not get the accommodations that I wanted. What a pleasant surprise. We got a one bedroom one bath ocean front. I went through a travel agent and she booked a regular room I ended up calling and upgrading to a premium and it was worth it. The room had bamboo flooring throughout and tile mosaic in the bathroom. Kitchen had granite counters cherry cabinets and ss appliances. I really liked the floor plan there was a vestibule at the front door so you could dump all of your wet shoes and beach gear .... No shoes in the unit please. All the rooms have ocean views and we also had a balcony. The living area and bedroom had floor to ceiling windows. During our stay we watched whales, turtles and some amazing surfing right from our room. The room also had mirrors everywhere that made the room feel bigger and enhanced the ocean views. Another design feature I liked was the lighting. There was a lot of attention to detail lots of indirect and under cabinet lighting and much of it on dimmers. The only downside to the room is no tub. I have young kids and they like baths. The facility has a pool and a hot tube which we used every day. The only downside is the pool is between the two towers so it does not get as much sun as I would have liked. Also the beach directly in front has lots of reefs so it is not the best place to go for a swim but just a brief walk to the north or south and swimming is fine. Overall our stay was great and we would stay again. One thing my daughter brought up was that you are so close to the ocean you hear the waves at night. I loved it and slept fine but my daughter was not used to it and she had problems sleeping.

Room Tip: Go for premium

We stayed in Mahana 1019 for 10 days with brother & wife. I have stayed at the Mahana 5 times previously and this unit was by far the best in all categories. Can't imagine anything better for us (mid 50's). We came to the conclusion that when you visit Maui and have a marginal room/location, you tend to evaluate your stay based on the other things you did outside the room. But being in this unit with the luxurious appointments and the amazing views was a wonderful experience in and of itself. Its location on the south corner of the building provides views that others lack. From 10 stories up, there are ever changing panoramic views south to Black Rock, west to Lanai and north to Molokai. We saw whales breaching not far offshore, giant green sea turtles grazing on sea grass just past the breakwaters, multiple rainbows and shooting stars. The kitchen is very complete for cooking most meals and we took advantage of that and had many wonderful meals looking out at the views as we ate. Large dining table was more than enough for the 4 of us - could have easily accommodated 6+. We chose to grill several entree's (Ahi, NY steaks, mahi mahi) and with the abundance of grills available, never had to wait for one to open up. They were excellent quality Weber grills available both poolside and on the lawn area out front which also had tables to eat at if you wanted. For us one of the best features of the living space was the huge, very comfortable, sectional couch that formed a "conversation pit" kind of feel right at the windows that overlooked the ocean. We could all stretch out and relax and each could have a view out of some window or another. I have always thought the Mahana was an excellent facility in terms of location in Kaanapali - being right on the water and its proximity to Lahaina, and other little stores and shops - including the little Times supermarket directly across the street from the entrance. The only minor drawback being that it is about a 50 - 60 minute drive to Kahului on the east side of the island which is where all of the large retailers are - Costco, Walmart, etc.which is where locals tend to shop. This was my brother & wife's first stay at the Mahana and were thrilled with it. On the plane ride back to the mainland he wanted to know when we could schedule another - longer stay at 1019. I suggested maybe Cancun, Costa Rica or some other tropical locale and he asked, "Why?" then added "How do you improve on perfection?" Good point.
