I chose Aston Mahana at Kaanapali because of its high place on the tripadvisor reviews, and it didn't disappoint! A spacious 1BR/2BA condo (the cheaper 1BR/1BA was sold out), with a full queen-sized sofa bed in the living room (which is perfect for teenagers/kids) and a decent king-sized bed in the bedroom, complete with fully equiped kitchen and even washer/dryer. Daily maid service (which costs $10 in addition to the Expedia booking fee, but small money to pay, esp. since parking is free), friendly staff, swimming pool/hot tub (which my 4-year old loves).

The best thing - it's RIGHT ON the beach, and the snorkeling there is VERY good (hubby claims it's even better than at the crater Molokini). And I really love the fact that ALL condos at this property is OCEAN FRONT - you don't have to be lured by some low price at other hotel, only to find out daily parking costs $20 more, AND it's only "partial ocean view", or worse, "garden view". Fiery sunset every day, rainbow every day, and falling asleep to the waves every night.

Costco is 50 minutes away, we loaded up on the grocery AND wine and had very fresh clams and sushi in addtion to eating out. For a leisurely condo living right on the beach, this is the perfect place!

Spent a week at the Aston Mahana and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. We had an oceanfront apartment on the 5th floor which was spotlessly clean and very well equipped. The views were to die for with the ocean right in front of us. Everything in the apartment worked well, obviously well maintained. The beach in front of the hotel has a coral reef, great for snorkeling but to swim needed to walk only 100 yards along the beach. Shops were an easy walk away.

The front desk staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly and the pool area was always clean and tidy as were the extensive grounds.

This is one of the best run holiday apartment buildings we have stayed in and management deserves a pat on the back for doing such a great job.

Room Tip: Higher floor on the waterfront

The Mahana is an older hotel right on Kaanapali beach. We have stayed here numerous times. There have been some recent updates and the units are individually decorated. The pool, spa, BBQ area is VERY nice and so convenient. Every unit is front and center on the ocean and the beach with lovely balconies that provide the opportunity to have a meal with that fabulous view. We have stayed in the studios which are plenty big and convenient for our needs. The washer and dryer are a terrific convenience and the air conditioning is a gift on those few hot, hot days. This hotel is close to everything on Maui. It is the perfect launching spot for touring or just enjoying a peaceful retreat. The parking is free (practically unheard of in that area) and safe. The staff is attentive and accommodating. We have stayed at several places on Maui and this is our favorite! Try the Okazuya Deli right down the street - it has an amazing selection and everything is fresh and delicious! Locals call in and take out.

Room Tip: Anything above the third floor is quieter. All the views are great. There are elevators to make comi...

Having read some of the negative reviews, was a bit concerned about what we would end up with, but were very happy with our studio unit. Ask for #203 if you want a studio, it was very roomy, had a separate kitchen and bathroom and a large balcony with great ocean views. The rest of the unit was very generous in size as well – a king-size bed with 2 chests of drawers, a love seat, a lounge chair and a dining table for 2 still left lots of room to move around. Granite countertops in kitchen and bath, new tiles, the whole unit seems to have been completely renovated within the past couple of years. The owners had left some guest books in the room, which are always fun to read. We really enjoyed reading about the owners’ frequent visits and experiences as well as those of other guests. Plus there were some great tips/reviews on area restaurants there as well. The Aston Mahana is located in Honokowai, about 15 minutes from Lahaina, and the pool area, beach access, amenities are all fine. There are 3 or 4 big stainless steel bbqs for guests to use, and a free DVD system. You can walk along the beach for several miles, and there are coral reefs right off the beach for those who enjoy snorkel/scuba. Lots of colourful fish, big sea turtles, etc. Whale sightings are very common during mating season, we were there near the end of the season and were disappointed not to see any whales. Then on our last day, we finally saw a pair breaching in the distance! We had 2 maintenance issues with our unit, and I have to give the management full props for their quick response. The A/C wasn’t working, so we notified the front desk on the first morning and there was a repairman there within the hour. We also noticed some extra guests in the dishwasher area (okay, there were some bugs) – very common in tropical climates, don’t let this deter you from the Aston. Again, we notified the front desk and we were contacted by pest control almost immediately to see when it would be convenient for them to access the unit without disrupting our vacation. Whatever they did, we never saw critters during the rest of our stay. We had also requested extra pillows and hangers when we made our reservation, and everything was provided as asked.

Because this is a condo hotel, there is always the chance you will end up with a unit that is badly in need of some TLC. We were lucky to end up in 203. I would suggest you read the Room Tips on TA and request a specific room when you make your reservation just to be safe.

Room Tip: Room 203 is a renovated spacious studio unit. You won't be disappointed.

Stayed at the Aston Mahana April 21-29, 2012. The staff was exceptionally helpful, especially Garrett and Karen. They answered every question concerning nearby grocery stores, snorkel rental places, how to get to church in Lahaina, safe beaches, etc. Also, the tour representative who gave her presentation the first morning, Lynn, I believe, was also incredibly helpful, and found us a great snorkeling tour with the Maui Ocean Center, good seats at the Ulalena show in Lahaina, and a wonderful trip to the Maui Ocean Center Aquarium plus a lot of hints on where to go on the island for walks, exploration, etc. The view from our 12th floor was stunning-watched the paddle boarders every day, and one day we were able to watch the slow journey of a sea turtle heading north. The thundering ocean did keep us awake from time to time, but that is what we came to Maui for, so didn't mind a bit! Enjoyed the pool and hot tub. There weren't many children so usually had the pool and hot tub to ourselves or with another couple. The beach in front of the hotel is too rocky and rough so I don't recommend it for children, but good beaches are just a few minutes walking distance away.
The studio was just the right size. Kitchen had a washer/dryer. We shopped at the nearby farmer's market and the Times grocery store and ate most of our meals in the room. We can hardly wait to return and would not consider any other place in Maui!!

Room Tip: Some people on lower floors complained about the wind and mist from ocean came into their rooms. I...

We walked the beach everyday and there isn't another property that is this close to the water. We stayed on the 4th floor. Honestly, my only complaint is it's so close to the water that if you sleep with the windows open the Ocean will keep you up at night. I even could feel the mist from the waves hitting me while I was on the patio. We didn't book with the hotel but another travel company called Chase N Rainbows. You can also book on VRBO. Both will give you a better deal and you'll know exactly which property you are getting. Everything from fully stocked kitchen to washer/dryer, two bathrooms, and again, amazing and best ocean front view in Maui. No joke, there isn't another hotel this close and it seems to be more affordable than any other place on that beach.
