“DO NOT STAY IN UNIT D3”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 15, 2012

I have never been to Hawaii and was so looking forward to a relaxing time. We chose Unit D3 as the listing mentioned an ocean view. Yes, that was the only thing attractive about the unit. I could not tell if the carpet was peach, yellow, or tan as it was filthy. The refrigerator had mold on the seals and door was rusted. The chairs in the master suite were rusted around the buttons. The mirror frame actually fell off. I would return to the property but unless the owners decide to update I would never return to that unit.

This was our first stay at Kahana Sunset. We stayed in F2. It was very clean and been nicely updated. The owners should be proud. We rented through Sullivan property management and were very satisfied. The staff at Kahana Sunset went out of there way to make you feel welcomed and the grounds were gorgeous. The beach is small but most days there were no more than 6 people on it at a time. We saw and snorkelled with multiple turtles daily. The pool is heated and excellent for families. We grilled most nights and had no trouble getting a bbq. We had an updated unit. We were in a couple of non-updated units and I would recommend spending the extra money. The location is definitely out of the way but that is what we were looking for. Can't wait to come back again.

Room Tip: Building F would be my first choice. If you are a light sleeper the sound of the ocean might bother...

A trip to the Kahana Sunset 2 years ago was quite a disappointment, especially since the family has been regular visitors for over 20 years. In fact the trip was so dreadful we had decided not to go again. However my auntie really wanted to go back so we decided to give it one more shot in 2012.

This time our trip was as fun as we had remembered in happier times. I don't know if it is that we reserved our units through the Sullivan agency or if perhaps they have new management on the property. Whatever the reason it was back to a delightful and relaxing vacation.

As mentioned in another review, the sea wall is a bit of a complexity right now but I am sure that it will be rectified soon. This was the first visit that I had shared where we were in the B building and while the view wasn't right over the water it was still lovely.

Thank you Kahana for bringing customer service back to your property.

Room Tip: Check the condos online before picking your spot. Those in the B building back up to the parking lo...

We've stayed there twice, in 2007 and March 2012, both times with 2 kids, and my elderly Mom came in 2007. Also we know the owner of one of the upscale “F” units.

It’s nice, but you need to make sure you get a recently-updated units, we hear stories that some of them are getting pretty run-down.

The beach is just OK by Maui standards, which means good, and you’re like 3 minutes drive from Kapalua Bay beach, which is incredibly nice, and close to others too. The snorkeling isn’t fabulous for coral/fishes, but I saw 3 different turtles and a really surprising sea-snake.

The pool isn’t big, you won’t swim lengths there, but it’s great for young kids.

The Napili plaza, another 3 minute drive, has a very decent grocery store and coffee shop.

You’ll notice that part of the beachfront wall is wired off and marked “Stay away”. Our friend who owns the F unit says they’re having a fight with Maui county because they can’t produce the building permit for the wall, so the county is requiring them neither to fix it nor to tear it down, but to let it fall apart naturally.

By far the biggest problem with this place is that Napili is way out there at the top left corner of the island, and it’s a loooong drive down a narrow road through Lahaina if you want to go see anything in the bottom right three quarters of the island. So if you’re OK with mostly beaches and laziness, it’s just the ticket. I wouldn’t go there for an adults-mostly vacation, but will certainly take the kids back again.

Our family enjoyed a 2 bed, 2 bath unit in Feb of 2012 on a reccommendation of a friend. This was the best of all worlds: close to Lahaina, but not in Kaanapali; a tropical feeling location, but without a ton of groundskeepers; this is a hotel that is a condominium. We have been to Maui a number of times and this was a great location for us. The pool is where our little boy learned to swim and the children's pool is great for the toddlers. The beach is mellow in the summers, but in the winters it can a be a little but of an abrupt break on the beach. This area is great for a leisurely vacation with farmers markets, restaurants, and shopping just up the way. Because it is on the Northern part of the island it is more likely to rain than in Lahaina or kihei but, with a rental car, you can just drive until it isn't. Our family is sure to come back.

We've stayed at Kahana Sunset at least 10 times. Early on, the "F" building was our favorite because of the steps to the ocean and our younger children. Recent changes (thanks to the ocean) caused the condo owners to wall off the steps from F building. These units are still grand, but with married children and the changes, building "A" is my favorite. A-10 is our unit of choice, being on the end and having windows on the side looking at a garden as well as the lanai and upper deck.

Kahana Sunset has 2 types of units, 1 or 2 bedrooms. Building A has only 2 bedrooms with 1400 sq feet, 2.5 baths, and full kitchen/washer-dryer. Kitchen has been nicely refinished and is fully equipped. The units here are individually owned, and most use either the Kahana Sunset mgt to rent, or through Sullivan Realtors. Our unit had the Kahana Sunset folks and they were OUTSTANDING! Helpful, friendly, accommodating. Onsite, and have daily service to clean and change linens.

We renewed our vows while here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5A2q1Q7Xf4 for the video) and are seen here on our Lanai just outside the unit. Great ocean front, lots of beach down below, and first night we spotted 15 sea turtles in the cove below us.

This is not hotel living! It's much better, allowing us to relax, cook if we want, watch the whales in our jammies, and walk out the door to the ocean. Truly a home in a vacation spot.

TY Kahana Sunset, and the owner of unit A10!

Room Tip: Building A and F have direct access to the ocean with superb views. All other units are great, but...
