“Truly enjoyed our stay!”
Reviewed October 20, 2005

We just returned from a wonderful Hawaiian Vacation. We had stayed at this resort in the past and found it to be a great location as well as pretty well maintained. The only problem was construction going on. It had been under construction 5 years ago when we were there and it wasn't complete yet. The noise wasn't that bothersome as long as you were out during the day like most people are when on vacation. However the construction people were pretty rude. Like we were invading THEIR space. Let's see who was paying to stay there!?! This isn't really the hotel's fault, but it is a reflection in our opinion. Overall, as stated above, great location and the best place on the beach!!! Would absolutely stay here again!

We had been planning a big family trip to Hawaii complete with elderly parents, and toddler, etc. and were looking for a great location with luxurious rooms and great service. The Alii was absolutely perfect. We had two condos, one two bdrm with a murphy bed and another one bdrm with a roll away bed and it was perfect for all of us. We could eat out when we wanted or go to the grocery store and eat a simple lunch; drinks and snacks were always available; we ordered high speed internet so that everyone could watch their stocks and read their emails; the staff was fantastic.
There are gas grills by the pool which were cleaned every morning by the staff and we grilled dinner a couple of times. Alot of fun. We didn't have to pay exorbitant resort fees or parking fees etc. was walking distance to all the shops and restaurants in Whaler's village and the beach and ocean were of course beautiful.
I would recommend that you ask for an upgraded/remodeled unit when you make your reservations. Our units were beautiful with marble floors and granite counters in the kitchen.
Only downside for people with teenagers: pool is rather small and simple; although we loved it.

We actually booked our stay directly through the individual condo owners, and highly recommend you consider the same! Unit #112,---------, is ocean view, first floor, easy access to pool, beach and parking, and BEAUTIFULLY decorated! The unit is a two-bedroom, though seems slightly smaller than the ~1500 sq ft recommended, but is ample space for a family of four and offers two bedrooms, two baths, which is very convenient! The baths/kitchen are nicely appointed with granite and tile, travertine flooring throughout (except carpet in bedrooms) and the living areas have comfy furniture. We chose to eat in for several of our meals as were traveling with our 2yr old son, who was adjusting to the time zone differences and needed extra rest and peace and quiet to avoid being too overwhelmed - groceries can be purchased ~2.5mi south at the Safeway grocery at Lahaina Cannery Mall. Bring your Safeway/Von's/etc. card so you can get the sale prices! The Kaanapali Alii grills are stainless steel built-ins and very nice and clean, so worth getting some meat/fish to grill out at least once during your stay. Otherwise for cooking in, the Alii #112 has modern stainless appliances and a ceramic flat top cooking surface, in addition to a microwave, coffee maker, and even a blender for making your own Lava Flows!

The pool was nice and not overcrowded, though we traveled during an offpeak season. Lots of nice people at the resort who helped with any questions we had. The beach is a bit steep as noted in other reviews, but is silky soft sand and still enough beach to enable playing and getting your feet wet without dropping off into the deeper areas. We recommend that you move over just to the south end of the Alii resort beach area, as is more shallow and seemed to have less coral in the shallow waters as well.

The building, like many hotels, can get a bit noisy as seems walls/floors are not well insulated, enabling sounds from condos above and around to be heard, but not so much as to be distracting overall for your peace and quiet.

Other points of interest:
The Royal Lahaina Resort's Luau just to the north is perfect for those traveling with children as offers a kids' menu of chicken nuggets, French fries, hot dogs, etc. And, the food overall at the Luau was delicious! Lots to offer and all was wonderful. The show itself is also quite good. It was misting rain while we waited in the line outside and the resort/luau management were kind enough to provide plastic ponchos to all guests which I understand at others were offered at a charge!

Kimo's Restaurant in Lahaina has great prime rib that melts in your mouth! And, do try the Hula Pie, though recommend that more than one person share it as it's huge!

Cheeseburger in Paradise was nice for a lunch out, but recommend Bubba Gump's for similar, but better, food and a very fun atmosphere.

Lahaina Fish Company left us unimpressed overall for its seafood, as wasn't the best, or near the best, that we have had, but others seemed to like it well, so might still be worth a try depending on your tastes. If you are interested in a bit more of a drive for seafood, we have been told by several that Mama's Fish House in Kuau is the best - we opted out as again traveling with a two-yr old, so didn't spend a lot of time driving in the car.

Our family of four stayed at the Ali'i for five nights. I had been a little concerned about whether I'd made the right choice after I saw this website, but I am happy to report we did. Our trip took us to three islands and for this leg of the trip it was nice to have more than one room so each of us could have some privacy and alone time.

After seeing some of the reviews, I went back to the travel agent and requested that he put a request through our package booking agent for an upgraded/renovated room. We had a one bedroom with den. We had not even requested the den. The place was very spacious and the furnishings were nice. So convenient to have the full refrigerator, toaster, microwave etc. And the washer/dryer meant we could pack a lot less. They even provide the laundry detergent.

The pool is not fancy like some of the resorts, but it was crystal clear. We could hardly keep the kids out of it. There is a large regular pool plus a small kiddie pool and a hot tub.

As far as complaints, we paid for a partial ocean view and got pretty much a garden view because the pool house took up much of our view. Had we been one floor higher (third) we'd have had a beautiful ocean view. Also, the place was somewhat damp. There is some construction going on, but we were only affected by the closure of an elevator.

We stayed at the Kaanapali Alii last month with our two boys, 9 and 11. We have been to Hawaii several times and were very excited to stay at the Ali'i because the reviews had been so favorable, but we were actually quite disappointed. When we arrived, the desk clerk took my information and then handed us the key. Another guest who was also checking in, was being told about all of the wonderful amenities available. He was told of the weight room, yoga classes, a reciprocal agreement with the Westin next door, etc... When I asked the clerk to tell me a little about the Ali'i, she said that since I booked through Maui Beachfront Rentals, her only obligation was to give me a key. Shocked at her rudeness, I questioned her further. She said that 12 of the condos are maintained separately and I had one of them, which meant no weight room, no yoga, no housekeeping, no privileges at the Westin, etc. It also meant that mine was quite out of date and that there was no full ocean view, as I had paid for. No big deal, but just be aware. She handed me a beautiful brochure and told me that next time I might rethink who I book through. Also, she told me that the water would be turned off the next day to renovate another condo, and that cable workers would be in and out of the condos Monday through Friday. The clerk walked away without telling us which building we were in and where to find it, and where to park. We were very kind and were shocked at the way we were treated. It is for this reason that we won't return to the Ali'i. The pool was also closed for at least 24 hours because someone had a big accident in it. We worked around all of these issues and had the most wonderful vacation in Maui and Kauai. The Ali'i was only 5 out of our 11 days in Hawaii. Just be careful when you book, that you do not have one of the 12 separately maintained condos. Kaanapali Beach is the perfect location for a family, but we will never stay at the Ali'i again.

"no privileges at the Westin". When booking a unit managed by Classic Resorts (they run the front desk), you have charge privelges at the Westin. This means you can charge restaurant costs and spa charges back to your room at Kaanapali Ali'i. It does NOT mean you can use the Westin pool. No condo properties have arrangements to use the hotel pools.

The Ali'i (A-lee-ee) is a great condo resort in between the Westin and Marriott right on the beach at Kaanapali. Within short walking distance is the Whalers Village shops, wonderful snorkeling at Black Rock, UFO outdoor adventures, all kinds of activities - it is an unmatched location!

The complex has regular pool and jacuzzi - not the waterfalls and slides of the nearby resorts - but it has nice chairs, towels, free lemonade and is a lot less crowded and noisy. Anyway, when you are right on the beach - with 79 degree water and snorkeling - who needs a pool? One of the best features of the Ali'i pool area was the group of big gas grill bbqs that are meticulously maintained by what we dubbed "The Grill Team" because due to their amazing work, the grills looked brand new every day! We bbq'ed Ahi and filet mignon, shrimp and pineapple - keeping it fresh, light and a lot less expensive than meals in neighboring resorts.

We opted for the premiere upgrade on our condo and we weren't disappointed. It was big and beautiful - travertine floors, granite countertops, new appliances, big bathtub, and A/C controls in all the rooms.

The condo was great with one exception: our bedroom had a slight mildew smell. We got stickups, odor eliminator and flowers to mask the smell. The people before us did not complain, but I don't know if they did something to create the smell or we were sensitive to it, but with spray and time, we barely noticed it.

When we brought it up to kind folks at Ali'i - they made it right by us, so I can with all honesty tell you that our stay there was truly wonderful. I would definitely return to Ali'i on my next trip to Maui! The free fitness center, free parking, free towels, and washer dryer in the unit made the Ali'i a great value. My only advice is to get the premiere upgrade - it is worth the little extra to ensure a positive experience.

My husband and I and our 2 college aged children stayed here this past January. We loved it! The view from the balcony was great. There is nothing like having breakfast and lunch with a great view to boot.

There was renovation going on, but the only disruption we had was waiting for an elevator. Yes, the pool is very small, but we were always able to find a lounger if we wanted it . There were also beach chairs available and quite honestly with that great big Pacific Ocean out there who cares about the pool.

The location was great. Easy walk to Whaler's Village. Reasonably good restaurants there. We enjoyed Leilani's(get the purple sweet potatoes).

We did book a premier oceanview room. The room was one of the nicest we ever stayed in and we travel extensively domestically. I am also one to complain very easily if there is a problem, but there were no surprizes here. Just lots of relaxation.
