“Descent condos - pretty average everything”
Reviewed January 31, 2010

This resort is pretty average for the Lahaina side of the island. The location is good, with a nice beach out front. You're close to Kaanapali and Lahaina which is nice. The condos are clean, the grounds are clean, but nothing is impressive - hence the "average" comment. One big down side I can see would be staying here in the summer. The condos have one window AC unit. I would anticipate it not being able to cool the whole condo well at all, especially the back room. The windows in the rooms don't seal up well so they let what cool air does reach the bedrooms out and let lots of noise in. If you do stay here, make sure you're room is not near the elevator because you will hear everything! Also request a room that doesn't have the bedrooms facing the road as you will hear road noise. This resort is full of families, so if you don't want to listen to screaming kids dive bombing into the pools you might want to go elsewhere. It's amazing how parents are clueless as to how their children ruin things for others. It's a descent place. There are far worse on the island, but there are also lots that are nicer too.

We have stayed at Papakea two other times and think it is a great place to experience Maui. We just returned from a stay at Papakea, Jan 20 thru the 26th. We stayed in Bdlg A, which is an oceanfront condo, in a one bedroom. We could throw a rock and hit the ocean from our living room. We stepped out to the patio the first morning and saw a stunning view of Molokai, and humpback whales breaching right off the coast. My kids, 12 and 8, loved Papakea. The beach in front is below a sea wall and is a very small strip of sand. However, because of the row of rocks/coral off the beach a few yards, it was a great place for them to swim. They still had the wave action, but it was buffered by the
coral further out. They also had a great time snorkeling along the calmer side of the
coral/rocks. The pools are unheated, but the hot tubs are perfect after a swim in the ocean. It is a quiet complex, with quite a few older people, who did not seem to mind my children being around.
Our unit was not updated, which was okay with me, since I really like being close to the water more so than updated countertops. But many of the units can be rented directly from owners, and these units tend to be updated.
Papakea is close to Kaanapali and Lahaina. It also borders a really great sandy beach, if you want to walk just a few minutes down toward Kaanapali. They keep the grounds spotless, I saw security people patrolling the property frequently, the parking is free, and it is close to restaurants, grocery stores, a farmer's market, and an ABC store, just to mention a few things.

This is our second time booking ourselves at the Papakea with "Maui Dreams Come True", and unit B-308 was perfect for us. Great view, clean, nice lanai furniture, and listen to the waves all night. Wish we could have stayed longer!

This place is owned condominiums that are rented to guests. Depending on when the owner last renovated the condo, you may get a very nice one or a very poor one. We had a very poor condo. The Formica (yes, Formica) countertops were buckling, the sofa and chairs were dirty and on the verge of breaking apart. The woodwork was coming off the walls in places. The lanai (deck to us mainlanders) had out of date furniture. Oh yes, the air conditioner was a joke - a window unit installed in the patio window. It barely kept the living room cool and was useless for the bedroom.

We complained the day we checked in but were told they were full and no other accomodations were available. Since our stay was prepaid, we were stuck.

On the plus side, our condo had a beautiful view of the ocean. We spent most of our time on the lanai or out of the unit anyway, so we had a good time in spite of the poor accomodations. Also, we had a chance to see into another condo across the hallway from ours when the maid had the door open and it was beautiful. New furniture, granite countertops, terrific lanai furniture.

Anyway, be very careful with this property. It is a roll of the dice.

My husband and I went to Maui for the first time on December 1st 2009 and stayed 10 days. Our travel agent set us up at Papakea and we were both totally thrilled with the resort. We were upgraded to a one bedroom ocean view, D207, and we loved it. It did lack AC in the bedroom, but having the windows opened caused such a nice breeze that an AC was never needed. Everyone took care of our room and the grounds so nicely. Also the General Manager, left us a box of macadamia nut chocolates, a cute 3D bookmark and a bottle of champagne. My husband and I felt very special. We are already planning on going back next year. December is a beautiful time to be in Maui. It was 84 everyday and only rained once in 10 days. We also didn't mind not having a beach in front because we thought it kept all the people from walking through. It was very personable there.I have recommended Papakea to all my friends and family.

After selling our home on Maui, my husband and I lived at Papakea Resort for the month of November while looking for a long-term rental. Everything about Papakea was so wonderful that we would seriously love to find a long-term rental there!

I did not want to write the review so as to keep the hidden gem hidden.

This is an amazing place ..with breathtaking ocean views . We had an oceanfront balcony and i used to spend hours sitting there ...and infact its beautiful in the nights with the moon rays and the trees

Condo had the regular amenities which we are satisfied with.

The beach has waves and it is small. We actually did not even venture there..if we wanted to do the beach thing we went to Kapalua or other beach beaches
