Aston at Papakea Resort

We just returned from a week long stay at Papakea. I have stayed at this property a long time ago with my family and was worried about returning with my husband after reading some reviews on here. Fortunately, we had a fantastic stay at Papakea and I was reminded of the great value of this resort.

Papakea is a quiet, clean, and well kept condominium resort on a beautiful oceanfront location. Yes, the "good" beach is a five minute walk but it is a scenic and enjoyable walk so this shouldn't be a problem for most. The grounds are extremely well maintained with two beautiful kidney shaped pools, hot tubs, putting greens, shuffle boards, tennis courts, ponds, and tiki torches. It is a family resort so yes there are kids but they are everywhere on Maui!

Upon check in we asked for an upgraded room and were given K301 (one bedroom). This was fantastic because not only was it upgraded, it offered a better ocean view than the garden view we had booked! The upgrades consisted of tiled floor throughout, tiled counters, and a brand new shower. Yes the decor was wicker furniture, shells, and pineapples, but that is part of its Maui charm. There was an ac unit in the main room and my husband and I both felt this was more than sufficient to keep us cool throughout the night.

Service was prompt and friendly. We very much appreciated the free mai tai party on Thursday afternoon :). Maid service was appropriate. They changed the bed linens, towels, and tidied the room but YES you are responsible for cleaning up after your own dishes and laundry which should be anticipated for the price you are paying!!

I would recommend Papakea for families looking for great value in a resort. It has everything you need and is a beautiful property! Another bonus is it is right next door to the Times Market and ABC store, and a short walk from Honokawai farmers market which is very convenient.

Thank you for a wonderful experience!

We just returned to Philadelphia from a great family vacation at Papakea Resort in Maui. We booked our trip with Misty at Maui Dreams Come True and she was wonderful to work with and really guided us to a great affordable 2 bedroom unit. Our party consisted of my older parents and my 13 and 11 year old boys. This resort was perfect for all. My Father's number one priority was air-conditioning, and Misty told us this unit was perfect because all rooms were zoned. That was great for him. The unit had a nice view of the grounds, ocean, pool and putting greens, so that made my Mom very happy to watch all the activity. Our unit was upgraded with granite counter tops and comfortable beds and new furniture. That does go a long way when part of your party is spending a lot of time in the unit. The location of the Papakea was very convenient. We were able to make short drives to many different beaches depending on the activity the boys wanted to do that day, whether it be surfing, snorkeling, swimming or just catching sun on a beautiful beach in Maui. There was so much to do in West Maui, that we never even got to enjoy the road to Hana. This resort is perfect for a family who is looking for a great value without sacrificing quality. The grounds were tended to every morning and we took advantage of the nice clean grills by the pool for economical dinners on some of our nights. We also had the privilege of seeing another 3 bedroom unit with only 1 air-conditioning unit, and some rooms would have been very hot during hotter summer months. If air temp is an issue find a zoned unit!! Misty will help you. Papakea was a great family resort, probably not for honeymooners or young couples but perfect for family.

Room Tip: "ocean view might even be better than ocean front and more affordable"

Stayed in a 3 bedroom condo with family for a family wedding. Paid approximately $350/night through Flipkey. This place was definitely worth the money. It has a wonderful view of everything. Didn't rate excellent only because it didn't really have its own beach, unit is a bit older and didn't have some typical resort things. Although, all you have to do is really walk steps next door to Aston Kannapali Shores and since it's the same resort chain, you have access to their facilities as well. The beach there was good enough for us and our daughter who is 2.5 years old. Going to Maui you would typically visit other local beaches that are bigger and more touristy anyway. Every morning we would walk over to the beach or use the pool. it's great that it has 2, one for each section of the resort. Size of the pool was decent. Loved that it had so many bbq's you could use to cook if you felt like it. Not much of a lobby area, no little shops, etc. but it is a small condo resort. Again, you can go steps next door for that if need be. It was really down the street from the small local restaurants, ABC Store (convenience / souvenir store / gas station), small farmers market, across the street from a grocery store, a couple of reputable snorkel gear (etc.) rental stores, and overall, really close to most Kaanapali and Lahina tourist spots. For us the location was great. The condo itself, unit G-405, was a bit older than the other units that I was hoping for as the others were renovated. But all in all it was very good. They provided way more stuff than when we stayed another condo unit at Aston Kaanapali Shores with a different condo owner. This one had all the kitchen necessities, including little things like dish detergent, sponge, dishwashing detergent, basic cooking ingredients, laundry detergent, etc. Little things you don't want to have to think about buying knowing you wouldn't use it all. Plenty of towels and sheets. They provided golf clubs and golf balls for the mini putt course at the resort. Our other family who rented from the same resort didn't have this stuff if their unit. They say they have air condition which is true, however, it's one window type unit for the whole condo. It's sufficient if you have it running all day (even while you're out) and then have all the ceiling fans going. The 3rd "bedroom" is really a loft but decent size with 3 beds. Had a dresser but no closet though. Only mentioning it because we had dress close to hang for the wedding but we just hung it in one of the other 2 bedrooms. We had noticed the iron was missing at one point and the owner was very quick to have one brought to us. Overall, a good experience and would go back.

We(parents, 2 teens), booked an upper floor 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo in the 'J' Building directly with the owner through VRBO for the first week in August, 2013. The condo was beautifully updated and very well equiped. Every resort worker we came in contact with was friendly and helpful. The grounds are meticulously cared for with flowers, palm trees and a koi pond. They were doing maintenance on one of the far buildings, but we never heard one sound of construction. If we were closer, that might have been a problem. Since our children are teens, a short walk to the beach was not an issue. We were not ocean front but had a beautiful view of the ocean and picture perfect sunset each evening. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Book through VRBO... lots of pictures so you know exactly what you are getting.

We stayed in J201, 1 bedroom ocean view it was nicely remodeled and had all the ammenities we needed. I know alot of people talk about no AC in the bedroom but it was okay, we just opened the windows and let the wind flow through. We didn't spend a lot of time in the room so it was no big deal. The resort was great and close to a nice beach next door. Pools were nice as well. Just a heads up make sure you go to MAMA's Fish House. One of my highlights, pretty spendy but worth every penny.

Room Tip: Make sure to get a room on atleast the 2nd floor if not, you will have people walking by your lanai.

Great place to stay if you're looking to save money on your trip to Hawaii. Refrigerator, stove, microwave, and washer/dryer allows you to have a home away from home. It can get expensive eating out every meal, so being able to buy groceries and cook in your room can definitely ease the burden. Try to get a higher level floor so you can have some privacy on your balcony.

We had a one bedroom oceanfront condo and we were so very well pleased with the view, the cleanness of the room and facility, the staff, the quite peaceful surroundings, just every thing. Lots of good places to eat and shop. If you you want to get your money's worth, check out the Papakea Resort. We wouldn't even look at another resort on our next visit.

Room Tip: I would pay the extra for waterfront.
