“Perfect Place to stay”
Reviewed June 30, 2013

We stayed at Papakea for our honeymoon. We had a nice ocean view, the unit was older but the upkeep was fine. The resort itself has a nice pool, sea wall, putting greens and shuffle board. There is a sandy beach right next door, a 1 minute walk. Across the street from the resort there is a grocery store, subway and a couple small restaurants. Lahaina is less then 10 minutes away and Kapalua is the same. The resort is affordable, the staff is fantastic, the palce is pretty quiet and I would stay here again. The beaches around the Papakea are good fro kids as the waves are not huge like they are by Makena. We loved our stay and cant wait to come back.

Room Tip: we stayed in H302, it wasnt air conditioned but there was a nice breeze always blowing through so it...

This resort would have been good if construction was not being done. The weekend was good but Monday till Friday was loud and the worst time for someone trying to relax. Please call any hotel to see if they are doing construction. They had nothing on their website stating anything about construction or at least nothing that stood out for me to know. So much for a nice Hawaii vacation. This place would have be good if not for the noise. I have learned a good lesson before booking a vacation. When I complained about this all I got was sorry and nothing else.

I'm a little behind on my reviews, so I'll disclose that we stayed here for 10 days in mid-December 2012. We stayed in K-301 next to bldg L overlooking the Loud Pool - the one that is for kids/families. To simplify, I'm going to list the pros and cons for a couple on a romantic getaway.
Pro: Nice staff, beautiful grounds, K-301 had an ocean view (over the loud pool - see cons), good general Lahaina location, washer/dryer in this unit, big and roomy 1 bedrom unit, air-conditioning in living room (also see cons), reasonable price.
Cons: LOUD. This 'resort' is a big family hangout, so if you want to take your group on a value vacation and don't plan on getting much relaxation, this might be for you. Lots of kids, lots of screaming, lots of party time at the pool until 10:00 p.m.
No restaurant on site, but a full kitchen is - saves money, but somebody's going to have to cook and clean. Our unit had maid service, but not for doing dishes.
Another LOUD - construction. Seems like this is an ongoing theme, so you probably won't know which units are affected by the Noise during 'business hours.'
Comfort: Our unit looks nice at first, but the furniture is uncomfortable. The couch cushions kept slipping off and the bed was rock hard.
There is air conditioning in the living room, but it doesn't reach in to the bedroom, so sleeping was Hot, even though there is an overhead fan.
We spent our days beach hopping around Lahaina (really loved the beach by the Ritz) and came back after dinner each night but still had to contend with the Loud pool kids until 10:00 p.m. Very annoying.
Pools: There is another pool on the other side of the resort that is suppose to be for adults (there were some kids there when we went, but they were well behaved.) This pool is on the cool side and the pool that our unit overlooked is much warmer - maybe because...hmmmm. We only went in it once. Much too crazy busy, and did I mention Loud?
We spent our last 3 days at Makena and had a relaxing and beautiful time there.
Sorry - we won't choose Aston Papakea again - it's not for us.

Room Tip: Get an Ocean Front room - I hear the loud waves block out the Loud People

We stayed at the Papkea resort from May 18-25th, 2013. Stayed in "B" Bldg on the 4th floor. A one bedroom with a loft. The loft had two twin beds, nightstands, closet and plenty of room. Decent size main bedroom with flat panel TV. Very modern kitchen with granite counter-top, modern stainless steel appliances. Good size living room with two recliners, sofa-bed, and dining table for 4 and 46" flat panel TV. The lanai looks over the pool area and out to the ocean. Beautiful view for late night sunsets, early morning coffee, or just watching people explore the resort. The bathroom is a single shower stall and single vanity granite counter. The unit has a washer and dryer, so you'll find that once again you over-packed. Never saw any bugs or critters and the unit is very well maintained. So as far as the room accomodations ..... EXCELLENT !!

The outside area is well manicured and maintained. There is a sea-wall and but no sandy beach. Guest can choose to use the recliners that are on the lawn near the sea-wall overlooking the ocean or you can sit around the pool. The lawn area offers shuffle board and a golf putting area. The ocean in front of the resort has a long running reef and with low tide, you can walk out to the reef. Not really much to do in the way of ocean activity. Better snorkeling elsewhere. There are two pool on the premise, and plenty of bar-b-ques (at least 8) around the two pools. The BBQ are clean and well maintained and offers seating around each.

The buildings are currently going through some exterior upgrades, but this did not create any problems with either noise or parking. The crowds were mostly younger families with kids or some of us seniors on vacation. Not much in the way of the singles crown as the resort does not have a bar or night life activities. Very quiet in the evenings with maybe a few folks enjoying the jacuzzi. There are tennis courts on the grounds and free use of tennis rackets and balls. Also, free use of putters and golf balls.

The resort is within walking distance of an ABC Store, Times Grocery Market and several local restaurants. For a GREAT take-out at a fantastic price call ahead to Okazuny's about a block away. It's only take-out but always a line outside picking up food. Lahina is less than 10 minutes away and Whaler's Village is even closer.

We've been going to Papakea for years and find it to be a great deal for the price. We explore local beaches (Kapalua Bay, Napili Bay) and find there are plenty of places to relax. Although we are only in our room during the evening and nights, the accomodations certainly meet expectations. Papakea is just a great deal for the money and just as nice as the more expensive big resorts along the water.

I love that the units have a washer & dryer in them for no extra charge! Clean older resort with all that you need. The onsite Expedia representative made booking excursions easy & she was very knowledgeable. Parking was great too. The only thing I would want more is to have a A/C in the room, but we did know that going in & made due with the screened patio door letting air / breeze in.

Room quality: We got a ground level floor, which, after being on ground floor in Ko Olina, was kind of frustrating. Place is kind of dumpy. Oh yeah, almost forgot, there was a mouse in our room. 2 stars

Amenities: Furniture was pretty was pretty nice, tech seemed a little dated, I'm pretty sure the guys who owns this condo is pushing 80. Wifi really only worked in the main room. Kitchen was decent enough. 3.5 stars

Staff: Fairly friendly and knowledgeable, though, they got a little winded. Got in late and the guy wanted to tell us about all the stuff going on and I just wanted to sleep. 3 stars

Overall: Recommended by AAA travel service for staying in Maui. It's decent, but their are certainly better places to stay around here

Perfection! Thank you to the helpful people at the front desk! I'm so happy to be giving this review as I'm looking out on the beautiful grounds right now :)
