“Another great stay at Papakea”
Reviewed January 3, 2012

This is my first review of Papakea, however my wife and I have stayed there 10 times over the past 3 years. We always get ocean front; I think it is worth the extra money to wake up looking at the ocean, and listening to the waves at night. Not to mention seeing the whales play during the season.

The Good.
The staff are wonderful and helpful.
The resort is convenient to everything you need from Pizza Hut, Farmers Market, and a full size grocery store called Times. Actually I found their prizes very reasonable and will not stop at the Costco Circus again.

My only suggestions to Papakea: Internet is slow. Some of the rooms are much more modern than others (privately owned so it is up to the owner to keep them up) No beach - we don't care as we drive to the beaches, or there is one right next door. BBQ's don't get super hot. Disappointed that you have recently added a $10 resort fee.

Papakea is the best bang for your dollar, we have walked from there to Whaler's Village and have toured most of the properties north into Napili, and Papakea has them all beat.

I just thought I should write a review because we have stayed their so many times. Perhaps I didn't want to share as I don't want them to get to popular.

We are time share owners of Vacation Internationale and we booked this trip several months in advance. We weren't quite sure what to expect from the pictures, but as it turns out, the condo was good. Sure, it's very basic, but it has everything to keep you happy during your vacation: a full kitchen with dishes and appliances, a comfortable bed, a nice deck overlooking the property with views of the ocean (we stayed in unit D302), access to the fitness center at the resort next door, a convenient location, activities for families, and two pools surrounded by well-maintained grounds. Now, if you're looking for modern and contemporary design in a resort, this is not the place for you. Instead, you will get a structure built in the 70's that rests its laurels on a Hawaiian motif that attempts to be timeless. I will admit I wanted a bit of a more updated feel in the beginning, but after a few days I certainly settled into the simple and basic charm of the place. It was spotless when we checked in and in the end that is truly what really matters the most in my opinion. Maui is a beautiful place and at the end of the day it's about the island anyway. Spending too much time in your room is questionable in an environment like this one. You will be comfortable here if you're not a connoisseur or high-maintenance kind of person. Remember, the Four Seasons is always an option for 1.345 gazillion, but I think we all agree that's not easy to come by these days. Instead, go for the basic, save a few bucks and enjoy the intoxicating sights and sounds of Maui.

We were in Maui for a family wedding in October 2010. Most of the wedding party and guests were staying at the Aston Kaanapali Shores next door. We were on more of a budget, but wanted to stay close by, and found a condo at the Aston Papakea through through VRBO (Vacation Rental By Owner).

We paid far less than we would have booking through Aston, and we were very happy with the condo we rented (D-204). The condo had everything we could have possibly wanted for our stay, and the owners - who lived nearby - were very welcoming and wonderful to deal with.

The condo was spacious and breezy, and we loved the Hawaaian decor. On our arrival there was a lovely welcome note and a lei, which was such a nice touch. We were happy to find a new flat-panel TV and iPod docking station in the living room. Nice new appliances in the well-equipped kitchen, and little extras like coffee sugar, salt and pepper, oil, paper towels, dish and laundry detergent, so we didn't have to buy our own. There was even a closet full of beach gear - towels, boogie boards, fins and a beach umbrella.

The bathroom was squeaky clean clean clean, with nice new fluffly towels. Bedroom was quiet at night, with a super-comfy king-sized bed.

We loved having breakfast on the lanai every morning, with a fantastic view looking out to the ocean over gardens and koi ponds. The lanai stays nice and cool all day.

The resort itself is very well maintained, beautiful lush grounds, quiet and laid-back. We loved the two pools, which were never crowded. Each pool also has a barbecue area, with several new and well-maintained barbecues, and patio tables for your dinner. There were fitness classes at the pools on some mornings.

There were also plenty of lounge chairs to sit on the lawn by the seawall, right above the water. One small drawback is that there's not much of a beach out front, and none at all at high tide, but you only have to walk a few steps to the south to find a nice stretch of sandy beach. From there, you can walk up the sandy beach all the way to the centre of Kaanapali. Mind you, it's a rather long walk.

Apart from checking in and out, we had little contact with the front desk. They were efficient at checking us in, and friendly enough. There is a free welcome breakfast for all guests, which we decided not to go to as we didn't want to deal with the time-share push. There's a desk at the hotel for booking excursions. We arranged all our own activities, and were mostly busy with wedding activities, so we didn't use the desk at all.

As for drawbacks, for us there really weren't any. However, we noted that not all the units were to the same standard; from the outside we could see that some look a little tired, while others were beautifully renovated. So careful which unit you choose!

There is no restaurant at the resort, which wasn't a problem for us; we mostly made our own meals, or drove into Lahaina for dinner.

Another great feature of the resort was the free parking. We had a rental car, and were happy not to pay the extra $10/day that was charged at most other resorts.

A few of our favourite experiences from this trip:

- walking down the beach to Black Rock and Kaanapali
- the road to Hana, with stops at Waianapanapa (black sand beach) and Oheo Gulch (7 sacred pools, bamboo forest)
- Paia town for browsing, Ahi tuna burgers at the Fish Market, and healthy groceries at Mana Foods
- driving through the countryside around Haiku and Makawao - cowboy country!
- hiking into the crater at Haleakala, and staying around for sunset - the light is wonderful, but bring a sweater!
- the Maui Swap Meet in Kahului, Saturday mornings
- frozen yogurt Yogurtland in Whalers Village (try the coconut and the taro!)
- snorkelling at Kapalua and Honolua - huge turtles and moray eels
- fish Tacos at Jawz, Makena Beach
- catching the shuttle at Kapalua Adventure Centre for the hike at the Arboretum

Room Tip: Ask to see several rooms, if you book directly through Aston - the standards differ greatly. Better...

This was our first trip to Maui, and the Aston Papakea was a great choice for us. The full kitchen and spacious condo was great for our one week stay. We had an ocean front 1 bedroom that had a great view and was really well equipped. We noticed several condos had been updated and renovated (at the owner's discretion and expense)- ours was old, but everything worked fine!
The front desk staff was okay- not overly friendly or helpful. I think they were understaffed, which led to average service. The place was oversold while we were there.
Housekeeping was also very understaffed- they missed our unit one day and confused us with another suite that asked for early service the next day. But they did a GREAT job- the place was immaculate every day.
The grounds were lovely and there is a lot of chairs around for sunbathing. The location is perfect- central without being in the busy beach area.
The Expedia Local Expert on site is terrific- definitely go to the orientation for some great advice and information, even if you don't want to book a tour.
There are unlimited DVD rentals, and all the modern conveniences you could want.
Cons- the place is noisy, no restaurants on site (but you can walk next door and eat there), very small actual beach front (sand), not much within walking distance.
Pros- everything you could want in a condo, great location, great price, Expedia Local Expert, great ocean view.

Room Tip: Definitely get an OCEAN FRONT room- 3rd or 4th (top) floor. Great view, and much quieter. You can...

We stayed at the Papakea L202 for three weeks in mid December. What a beautiful resort. We have a spacious two bedroom (there are six of us), the grounds are lovely and the access to everything in west Maui is great! There are pros and cons to the resort so I wondered whether to give it three or four stars. No, the beach isn't swim-worthy but a big part of coming to Maui is trying all the different beaches so we had no problem with this point. Pros: Lovely property, not crazy busy and friendly staff. The grounds crew were fantastic (what a huge job), the pools were great, the barbecue facilities great. We had no problems with bugs, and everything in our condo worked (although a very slow dryer!). Would we stay here again...definitely but I would be a bit wary about our requests - maybe speak to Dave (the hotel manager). He was the one who convinced me to book here given his upbeat and honest responses to many of the reviews of this property.

Cons: I guess just two complaints. We booked in March 2011 and requested a ground-floor unit, called monthly to confirm we still had our request recorded and...got the fourth floor. The next day we requested a move and got the second floor. Our in-laws requested to be moved also from their third floor to ground level but at that point, they ended up in a different building. Oh well. Because we stayed for three weeks, we were on the extended rate which meant weekly housekeeping. Funny enough, I spoke to a couple other people who were staying as long as us but received daily housekeeping?!? Our weekly housekeeping was every 7-8 days (not weekly) and pretty basic. Garbages weren't emptied, mirrors, soap dishes and bathtub not cleaned. I guess it is better than booking a condo with no services.

Stayed here mid Dec for a 3 night getaway.Booked through Expedia so got a fantastic deal
Check is was a bit slow but OK.The first room we were given was on the first floor,on the end,and seemed to have no privacy. The unit itself looked fine
We went back to reception, explained our situation, and were upgraded to a 2nd floor room with ocean view overlooking the pool
The room was well appointed, the kitchen had everything we needed and more.It was owned by someone(we met him on the last day) so well taken care of.There were boogie boards, cooler in the closet for picnic outings
Air con was noisy but worked fine.Didn't need it the whole time
Bedroom was utilitarian and dorm looking but comfortable
The grounds were immaculate. Two pools and a jacuzzi was available.Plenty of deck chairs
No beach to lie on,but that didn't bother me as i am not into that. There were steps leading down to the ocean to access the water if you wanted to swim or snorkel
Accessibility to shopping was great, many stores within easy walking distance.an ABC right nest to the resort,a strip mall a block or so up the road to the right with restaurants and a nice supermarket which was convenient if you self cater.Wish I had known that before I stopped at the Safeway in Lahaina
Further down the road to the left of the resort was another strip mall with fast food options,a massage place(very nice massages!)a place to rent snorkel gear and a well stocked natural foods market
A small shop selling photos and trinkets was also there-we ended up buying two prints of the most amazing sunrises we ever seen in print
All in all an enjoyable place to say
However if you are into having access to a beach a place like Kaanapali beach club or the like might be a better option

Room Tip: Don't be afraid to ask for an upgrade

Very dated property and the room was not clean. As a matter of fact, it was bug infested. After two days of calling it was finally treated but the bugs were not eliminated. The bed was terrible and the property noisy. Would recommend never staying at this property.

Aloha,

Not sure who this guset booked through as they do not mention it. I do know they did not ask for me so my guess is if they use Trip Advisor they should know to contact me if they indeed booked through Aston. Aston has a quality standards program in place and our units have to meet the standards we put forth or they are not allowed in our rental program. So if you are at Papakea and do not happy please ask for me whether you booked through Aston or not as I will do everything I can to assist you.

Mahalo,
