“Second return to MKV for our family and love it even more!”
Reviewed June 26, 2013

We returned to Maui June 2013 and this is our second time staying at the MKV which we absolutely still love! Like all the reviews before us, we replicate the comments of how laid back, quiet, and absolutely beautiful the grounds are and how well-maintened this property is. The beach access is amazing, clean and not crowded; a must for this family of 3. And with views of 2 other islands, not many can claim as much. Just love the sights from here. This time we did ask for beachside accomodations and were very happy with the villa we were given. Everything we needed was there...with even one necessary trip to the very handy onsite store for eggs that we forgot earlier in our trip to the grocery store. The property is well kept and had an updated bathroom and kitchen. Felt like home away from home! Additional amenities of the property is their restaurant "Castaway Cafe" which is an absolute delight. The staff are warm, friendly, and very pleasant. I enjoyed one of the best Mai Tai's I've ever had from this restaurant's poolside bar. One last thought, since our flight didn't leave until late in the day and after checkout, having the comfort of using their newly renovated shower/changing area was a life saver. We will definitely be back and when you choose this property, take us with you! Enjoy............

Room Tip: If you want to be close to the beach or have a view of the ocean, you will need to request this. The...

Beautiful property and stunning beach, however the balconies are not very well separated and if you wanted privacy then you really could not use them. We were there in may which was also grad week so may have been a little more crowded than usual. Our room was a privately owned villa which was lovely but the owners had full floor to ceiling mirrors on nearly every wall to give the illusion of space but it just made us feel like there was somebody in the room all the time as you kept glimpsing each others reflections in them. Would stay again

Room Tip: Don't go ground floor if possible as the balconies are not at all private

We just returned from a 9-night stay at the Maui Kaanapali Villas. The property combines some hotel amenities - a well-stocked gift shop, front desk, restaurant/bar, concierge desk and beach rentals - with condo-type rooms. The grounds are lovingly tended and owners are undertaking a multi-year landscaping upgrade. There is LOTS of grass and open stuff among the buildings and between the pool area and beach - including shady areas with chaises right off the beach. Few developers would retain that much open space in a new development. The beach is wide and sandy and considering the many condos on Kaanapali, very uncrowded.

In looking at recent reviews, it's clear that the quality of the condos varies widely. The key is to request an updated unit. We met several homeowners while there, who indicated many units are being renovated or will be soon. But they are individually owned...

Our unit, 307, was in the main building which was not a problem, contrary to other reviews we saw before the trip. In fact, other than some noisy neighbors in the wee hours one night, the unit, which based the front of the property with a bit of an ocean peek, was very quiet. The unit has been recently renovated with stone and tile floors, countertops and a large, walk-in shower with a rain shower head. There was a large safe for the electronic toys, a spacious closet and a dressing area in the bathroom.

The bedroom had a solid door separating it from the living area. We looked at several other units and noticed some older ones have the partition in a one BR unit, rather than a real door, so it pays to ask, and the front desk was gracious in letting us view several different units. We had a small lanai with chairs and a table - not all units had outdoor furniture, we noticed. The kitchen has new stainless appliances and was well stocked for light cooking. The hotel offers daily tidying service and provided paper towels, dishwasher detergent and a small bottle of dish soap.

Our unit had a comfortable and newer queen fold-out couch. AC worked well and the living area included a glass-topped table for four.

Outside of the hotel, the Lahaina Tennis Center is right next door, literally a 3 minute walk. The beachwalk is a great amenity for walkers and runners. Whaler's Village, the open-air shopping area, is a pleasant walk as is Duke's Grill, but if you'd rather ride, the trolley service picks up and drops off at the Villas about every 20 minutes. Several hotels nearby offer luaus and have shops and other restaurants. A Times grocery and some small restaurants, a snorkel shop and more were located at the north end of Kaanapali, a 5 minute drive or 2 mile walk from the Villas.

One more note: MKV does not do timeshare or condo sales onsite and is very low-key. We saw couples of all ages, some young families and some owners who are there for all or part of the time. If you want a concrete high rise, this is not for you. If you like a low density, low rise property with lots of grounds and a casual atmosphere, the Villas probably are a good fit. And you don't have to get up at 5 a.m. to claim a lounge chair!

Room Tip: Request a renovated room. Front desk will let you look at other options. While many advocate the Coc...

After having spent 10 nights in Waikkiki , looking forward to some down time in Maui arrived at the Aston around 2pm there was a big line at the check in counter with only one person on the desk after waiting for a long period of time got our room key only to be given a room with one queen bed
When we booked it was clearly stated we were travelling with 2 adults and 2 children and needed a room with two queen beds, we called front desk and the lady we spoke to told us the garden studio room only has one bed when I told her on there website it clearly stats they have two beds as well, she said she would have to call us back in half an hour. They did call us back to say they had another room we could look at. The room was very similar in style ( a bit dated) but had the bedding we required. The shower had poor flow and we had to turn the air conditioning off at night because it was so loud . After all the stuffing around we lost a whole afternoon in Maui. The grounds and pool are well looked after and the beach was beautiful , water crystal clear. Check out was no problem as we left at 5.30am and no one else was around.

Room Tip: Not sure if any tip will get you a good room.

We had a great trip to Maui. When we first booked this condo, there were only myself, my husband, and my granddaughter, so we booked a garden-view studio. We decided to add on our daughter at the last minute. When we arrived, I asked to be upgraded to an ocean-view 1 bdr. We were told it would be $70/night extra. Upon checkout, we were pleasantly surprised when the front desk waived the upgrade fee. The grounds were beautiful. The room was very large and well decorated. The pools were nice. There were no tennis courts, but we ended not taking our tennis raquets anyways so that was OK. Conveniently located in the north end of Ka'anapali.

After reading a few reviews here, I thought this place might actually be worth the money. Sorry folks, I hate to be the downer here...this is not the place if you are used to 4-5 star hotel resorts. I arrived after a long early morning 4am PST start with a 1 year old and arrived at OGG airport at 2pm local time. I checked in at 3:30, received my room key, and entered a room filled with room fixtures from the 70's, shag carpet, bathroom mold and grime and no bathroom ventilation. BTW, This room is Room 167 in the Coconut building. Feeling disappointed, cheated, and deceived, I went back to the front desk and told them my concerns. They offered me another room, but it was 10 TIMES WORSE!!! I don't remember the room number, but this room was again in the Coconut building. Is that called customer service at what they call a "resort?" After dealing with the front desk for 45, they offered me a room in SLIGHTLY better condition (I emphasize slightly), but couldn't get the room ready for me for another day because housekeeping was "off the clock." This was at 4:30. Well, if they're off the clock, get them back on! Don't hold me hostage and force me to this nasty room for a night when I'm in Maui for just a few days! No concessions were offered. I didn't ask for concessions because I couldn't think of asking for it. If you stay here, as for a room in the Tower. My parents had a room in the tower and it looked a lot better, although they had roach problems as well. I'm surprised no one else noticed roaches while they stayed here. The CastAway Café was decent if you want some thing quick and close, but the prices are the same as the nicer restaurants at the nearby Whalers Mall such as Hulu Grill. Anyone used to 4-5 star hotels should stick to 4-5 star hotels instead of trying this place.

Room Tip: The Coconut building

Aloha-
Thank you for taking the time to provide our staff with feedback. I am sorry you did receive a room that was up to your expectations. Obviously, this is the opposite of what we want and it is clear that we let you down. I am want to let you know that we have all of our units sprayed quarterly by a national pest control company and they are generally vey thorough. However, we do have more bugs in general in this climate than most visitors are used to. I apologize that you encountered some in your room. I also wanted to let you know that our property is rated 3 diamonds and that your comment about comparing our property to 4-5 diamond properties is valid. There is a price difference between our property and those and there is a price value relationship. I think our property is an excellent value, but it is different from some of the more expensive resorts. If you would like to give us another chance, I would be happy to assist you personally. My email address is patrick.flinn@astonhotels.com.
