We just returned from a wonderful 8-day stay in unit #503. The two-bedroom unit (with two bathrooms!) was perfect for a family with two older teenage girls. The location and grounds were great. We especially appreciated the on-site Expedia agent. It was nice for "one-stop" shopping to book all of our activities at discounted prices. Two of our favorite trip highlights: (A) Cirque Polynesia - I'm not sure what was more entertaining - the on-stage performers or watching the drummer!! (B) Snorkeling tour to Lana'i with Pacific Whale Foundation - it was fabulous! Both are a must-do.

We had a great time at Kaanapali Shores. It's clear that since Aston took over they're putting money into the property. The grounds are nice and well maintained. The beach is decent, but narrow and not as expansive as the beach a mile or so to the south. That said, there's some great snorkeling right off shore (we saw a lot of fish and a couple Green Sea Turtles up close and personal).

We loved that fact that all rooms have complete kitchens, this made our stay much more reasonable since we didn't have to eat out at every meal.

We had the unique opportunity to experience both the Studios and 2 Bedroom Suites. Both are comfortable and roomy. They are slowly making over the property so be sure to ask for a renovated room. The studio my wife and I shared was 'pre renovation' and while the kitchen was functional the cabinets and appliances were date and in need of an upgrade. The two bedroom was very roomy and comfortable. We had the upgraded kitchen and it was a much nicer experience. Overall, the quality of the units are what you might expect in a standard apartment complex, not top of the line but functional and practical. The two bedroom is roomy enough for a family to stay comfortably. We shared with another couple and they pushed the twin beds together to make a queen...not the greatest solution but it worked.

Free Wireless Internet was a nice plus. Some of the amenities, like the Wedding Gazebo and Spa are functional but not luxurious. Good alternatives if that's what your budget can afford.

My biggest beef was that they charged us for parking...I understand that they need to charge for parking otherwise non-guests might take advantage of their lot but when you're already charging me over $140 per night, do you really need to hit me up for another $9 to park my rental car? I was not pleased to see that on my bill when we checked out.

You will never long for more if you pick this establishment on Maui. The rooms and the views can not be beat anywhere. We upgraded to the Aloha suite after checking into a two bedroom suite, and it was well worth it. We've never been in a better suite anywhere...ever. The on-site restaurant is convenient and excellent, but you will also want to venture out, and the greatest restaurants on the island are in Whalers Village mall and in downtown Lahaina nearby. The best snorkeling and scuba is only a backstroke away from the beach at this property...I saw turtles, clorful fish, coral, lobsters, and much more without having to charter a boat or get on a bus. My wife loved the spa, and the whole family learned to scuba for free in the pool where they generously gave a class every morning to the guests that sign up. The Mai-Tais are happy hour priced every afternoon at the bar between the pools and the staff make you feel at home. I didn't want to leave.

We stayed at this hotel in August 2009 and found the hotel to be okay. Some of the rooms are upgraded ..some are not. They seemed to be having trouble with the fridges in some of the rooms as they were freezing everything in sight. Our kitchen was literally falling apart, Keep your food bills from Costo etc and the staff will credit your account. I wish that the rooms had been more evenly upgraded, rather than the lobby being so grand. In the end we paid extra for an upgraded room, and noticed that other couples seemed to be doing the same at the front desk as well. Do not go to the time share presentation at the Kaanapali Beach club... high pressure sales and not worth saving a few dollars on any excursions you may plan. Good luck on getting an upgraded room.

We were taken aback by the rating received on this review for a number of reasons. First, as one can see by the overwhelming majority of other reviews, we typically rate between 4 - 5, with the occasional 3 and only very rarely a lower rating.

Secondly, our units are normally clean and well maintained, continue to be upgraded and renovated on a regular basis and are more typically the subject of positive reviews and guest experiences.

Thirdly, we do not have ongoing issues with fridges freezing food, but in the case in which an appliance does malfunction, our maintenance department reacts swiftly and we take care of our guests.

Guests choose to upgrade for a variety of reasons (i.e. view, location to beach, garden preference, size of unit, etc.). We accommodate those requests with our goal of wanting the experience of guests to be the best it can be, which means doing our best to make sure that experience is properly aligned with their expectations.

Finally, in looking at the sub-ratings by category, we would actually average a rating of 3 on this review, not a 1 as shown as the overall score.

That wasn't a very glowing title, but I think it captures the essence of this place rather well. Given the alternatives in Kaanapali, the price we paid was very much in line with our experience. Let me start with the good stuff. First, the hotel staff (front desk and housekeeping) were very nice and very accomodating. If we needed something they were all over it. The room was adequate. Since we were outdoors most of the time, all we needed was a place to sleep, eat breakfast and do our laundry. In that sense it was very good. However, I definitely would not buy a time share here. The construction seemed cheap and the walls were thin. When housekeeping rolled a cart down the hallway our shelves shook! We weren't planning to live there, though, so that wasn't a show-stopper. We had an ocean view, which was great. A lot of reviewers complain about the birds but that didn't bother us a bit. They're noisy when they roost in the evening, but only for about an hour. Not a big deal. We loved the $100 credit for hotel services. The pools were nice and the hotel is across the street from a market, which was very convenient.

On the not so great side, the grounds need upkeep. We noticed missing tiles in the hot tub, missing grout around the pools, etc. Also, the beach in front isn't the best. If you walk up the shoreline it gets a lot better. Again, not a big deal unless you have small children and don't want to hike with them.

One thing to watch out for is the "orientation" they offer on your first full day. They push hard for you to show up for the continental breakfast and free drawing. This is basically a pitch for different island activities. We purchased a few and later learned that we could have purchased essentially the same packages for much less in Lahina. So, you might check out Lahina first to compare deals. There is also a timeshare pitch.

Aloha! Great to hear again how the spirit of "Aloha" exhibited by our team once again had a positive influence on the experience of our guests.

We were surprised to read the comment about the grounds needing upkeep, as one of the common themes throughout most of our reviews is how beautiful our grounds are.

The tile within the hot tub has already been replaced/corrected.

We did want to clarify that there are no time share sales here at Kaanapali Shores.

Mahalo.

Beautiful grounds and pools were beautiful. It was just steps from the beach. It is a little known fact, but just to the left of the hotel in the water, you will see a set of boeys.........this is GREAT snorkeling. It is a little coral reef. My husband and I also went scuba diving here and saw several turtles and a baby shark. (it is offered by the hotel for a fee......but worth it!!). Take advantage and enjoy it. My kids enjoyed Camp Kaanapali one day while the parents had a little r and r.
The hallway noise is a little loud though, as the people with the adjoining halllway kept slamming their door and it was VERY loud...........so it could use some more insulation........other than that, all was good. Great views and very relaxing!
Loved the fact that there was a washer and dryer..........star market is across the street for food items and laundry things. FREE internet, which is unheard of on Maui, so BIG plus here!
If you scan the horizan in the winter you just might see whales.......we did! Just beautiful.
Reataurant was OK, but not a great for the island, but quick and convenient.
All and all a nice stay.

This was our second trip to West Maui.

Once again, we rented directly from an owner. The complex is basically shaped like a horseshoe. I was originally set on an ocean front view, but ended up with a good deal on a 1br condo which is at the farthest point from the shore in the U of the horseshoe, #933. KS has a very nice landscaped courtyard with two pools, numerous trees, and even a mini walk-through tropical path. There is a waterfall and 'stream' in this sculptured landscape which provides a constant sound of running water directly under the lanai. In the morning and evening the mynah birds create quite a commotion in the trees just over the waterfall. There is also a wedding gazebo within these trees. btw, some rooms' view might be compromised by these same trees. If view is important to you, ask for 7th floor or higher. We were on the ninth floor which gave us a great view over the courtyard and out to the ocean and the sunsets. The walk to the pool and beach through this courtyard was quite pleasant. The lobby is open and is nicely decorated.

The advantage, in my opinion, of dealing directly with the owner is that you know exactly what room you are getting rather than spinning the wheel to see what Aston will give you.. After reviewing some listings and pictures, I called the owners. After talking with the owner, I could tell which owners I would want to rent from. By the way, with the down economy, you may find that individual owners are much more flexible with their pricing. The resort management companies, like Aston, will probably not be. In addition, they pose as owners on vrbo.com but it's easy to spot their listings because they have no specifics or personal feel.

The unit itself was up to date and everything worked well. The kitchen was well equipped with any utensils you would need for cooking a meal. We had a problem with the a/c but this was resolved by the building management fairly quickly. The main queen bed was an extra, extra-firm, the sofa sleeper a little on the soft side. For those of us with older eyes, I found the bedroom lighting ( two low-wattage lamps ) to be insufficient.

At the KS, don't expect great wireless internet which is useful for looking up places to go etc. You had to be in a certain place in the room to get good reception but even then it would just drop mysteriously and then come back.

For one dinner, we visited the KS restaurant. We found the prices about normal for a hotel in Maui. I had a fresh Mahi-mahi dinner for about $25.

There were lots of families at the KS. The pool area was active during the day and so was the beach. They also have a seperate shallow pool for the little ones. There are two hottubs, one at the main pool, the other in a semi-secluded area. Many guests used the restaurant for lunch and dinner. During the day, you can make orders poolside. The restaurant faces the pool area.

There is a $9/day parking fee. In general, I despise add-on fees such as these, but the $9 isn't bad when compared to $20 'resort fees' charged elsewhere. Because we rented directly from the owner, there were no other fees. There is a garage which is open to all guests which is a plus during rain or if you want the car cool when you get ready to go somewhere.

We were initially concerned about the arrival of Tropical Storm Felicia so we went to Haleakala on our first full day and were pleasantly surprised by a clear mountaintop and an unusually warm 61. But by the time we left it was clouding up. Best time to go is in the early morning ( or sunrise if you're really determined ). Take water, jackets and a full tank of gas. When Felicia finally meandered into town, all we really got was an afternoon of heavy drizzle.

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at KS. Based on the number of families I saw with kids of all ages, I would say this is a great place for families.
