“Very nice resort... aside from the add-on fees”
Reviewed August 7, 2014

The resort was gorgeous, clean, well-maintained, and staff was friendly. It has access to a beach (not crowded -- July), but a crowded pool. It has a fitness center, its own coffee cafe, and beautiful oceanfront rooms. The room is like a small apartment: dining table, bar, living room with a balcony view, kitchen (stove/oven, microwave, full-size refrigerator/freezer, and dishwasher), spacious bathroom, a double-closet with safe in the hallway (full mirrored doors), a half-closet in the bathroom, and your own washer/dryer combo with detergent.

They provide you with shampoo and soap, but no lotion. You get dishwasher cleaner and dishwashing liquid as well. Lots of glasses, plates, and cookware too.

My only complaint is that they charge $18/day for Internet, DVD rental, and video games -- even if you don't use any of them. They also charge a $9/day parking fee. This adds up quickly.

Aside from the extra fees, this was an excellent resort, and I was very pleased with all the comfort and amenities.

They also have a very nice shopping area with several stores on the main floor level.

Room Tip: I asked for an ocean-view room. The rooms are at a diagonal, so I got kind of a side ocean view, but...

Maui was our last leg of the trip and it was awesome. The condo was perfect and the balcony was big and I loved that it had a lounge chair. That was an awesome idea to include them on every big balcony. The restaurant was great for a quick breakfast. The staff was very helpful. And the concierge was so helpful in getting my girls out to ziplining. They went all out to get us reservations at the last minute. And I loved the crafters that they brought in. The pools are clean and they keep the grounds beautiful. It was the perfect place to stay. We did notice people having to bring down chairs to the beach from the second pool.

Aged and dated. Had a king room with kitchenette and quite possibly the worst view in all of Maui, which was disappointing. Consider an upgraded room and stay away from the 320s tower. This is the furthest tower from the beach and faces a parking lot/construction depot. Room entrance is right next to the car park, but divided by a cement wall. Plenty of construction areas to dodge on-site.

+ Well kept and very clean room.
+ Furniture and decor had a Hawaiian theme, but seemed old.
+ Kitchenette was a handy feature.

- Horrendous signage in the car park. Leave breadcrumbs to find your way out.
- $15 'concession' fee and $9 parking fee. The only value in the concession fee were the complimentary DVD rentals.
- Mattress cover felt like sleeping on Saran Wrap. Not the best in a tropical climate.
- Long and arduous check out process. Could not have the folio emailed and needed to drive over to the front desk, adding an extra 15 minutes to the departure process.
- Parking attendant was the strictest I've seen at a resort. Needed to show pass on entry and exit. Just include the parking in the concession fee and be done with it.

Room Tip: Stay away from the 'basic room', horrendous views in a separate wing from the main hotel.

Fourth year back to the Aston Kaanapali Shores and the simplest word is Ohana, family. We were greeted by our first names and even given a hug at check in. There are families everywhere, young and old. It's great to see families traveling in large groups and this is the perfect place to do it. Clean seems to be the religion, manicured grounds the mandate, and caring staff the norm. There are hundreds of great places on Maui to come, I don't doubt that, but there is only one place where the family trumps the dollar. Your not a number here.

When I checked in Dynia at the front desk was so friendly. She offered an upgrade to a room that was AMAZING. She was wonderful. This place has a pool & hot tub 15 feet from the beach. The beach is good for boogie boarding and snorkeling. When in town make sure you take the Pride Maui for snorkeling or scuba that was the highlight of our trip.

Room Tip: Get the one bedroom ocean view

Kaanapali Shores is a family resort with kitchens and beautiful views . There is something for everyone golf scuba diving or just fun and sun on the beach. Just min. from old Lahina town with shopping and resturants for every taste . And close to Kapalua's world famous golf corse. With the ocean for your backyard you can snorkle surf or just swim. The beach is over 2 miles long so lots of room to walk and enjoy the ocean. You can also take the beach walk which is a sidewalk that goes to Whalers shopping center, this is a 2 mile walk usally we take the bus back which is 2 dollars .Kaanapali Shores has studio apt up to two bedroom suites a place for every size family

Room Tip: Odd numbers are on the inside where the courtyard is.

Great ocean view from 603 - 2 bedroom unit.

Furniture is a bit dated, but very functional and the kitchen is well appointed for cooking. Hugh main bedroom and smallish 2nd bedroom, spacious lounge with pull out sofa bed. Plenty of room for a family of 5. Hotel amenities are good. The main pool is a little on the small side, but its adequate.

The resort seems to be pitched at families, lots of small children around (Im sure i saw a 3 week old!) so for any honeymooners - i would stay clear - plenty of other options for you on Maui.

I would recommend it for families, but as i said, unless you really like other peoples young children, couples and honeymooners, elsewhere is probably best. Still it is a very good resort and well priced. There is a small shopping center just across the road from the hotel, with restaurants and a bar - and a reasonable sized supermarket - so its in a good location.

Recommended Stay,

Room Tip: The wifi is included with your daily resort fee, so in fact its paid wifi.
