“Wonderful place but watch out for extra charges”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2014

The place is beautiful, well maintained and the staff is all friendly and helpful. However, watch out for the extra parking fees ($9.00 a day) and the resort fee. If you want to use the gym it is also extra. Staying in a Maui condo can be expensive when they add on these extra mandatory charges.
Beach, pool, gardens, location and condos were all a plus.

Room Tip: We stayed in a 1 bedroom condo with a garden view. It was perfect, we didn't have the sun blind...

We spent 3 nights at AKS and found the accommodations to be adequate. Our unit had 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen and living room/dining area. Our balcony overlooked the gardens and pool area but we were able to see the ocean and do some whale watching from it.

Pros: Our room had a great view. The location was convenient to Lahaina and Kapalua. The kitchen was well-equipped. Having a washer and dryer in the unit was very convenient. The grounds are very well-maintained and we enjoyed the "turtle pool" with our young son. The resort fee includes free DVD rentals. The Expedia experts in the lobby that were there to help you book excursions were very friendly and helpful. We booked a whale watching cruise with Pacific Whale Foundation (which was excellent).

Cons: The units are definitely dated. If you`re looking for luxury, this isn`t it. It seemed like the bathrooms had been updated somewhat recently but if you stood in the shower and looked at the ceiling, you could see through a large gap into the space between the ceiling and the floor above you. The beds were not too comfortable. There was not much room in the dresser in the second bedroom to unpack clothing. The TV in the second bedroom was outdated. The TV in the master bedroom was a flat screen TV but it was sitting on a wicker stand that was much too large for it. This left very little room to walk between it and the foot of the bed.

Conclusion: The resort had nice grounds and dated units, but it was fine for the amount of time we spent there. I would not choose this place for my honeymoon but it was adequate for our stay with the kids. I would probably choose to stay in Wailea if I come to Maui again but I enjoyed the few days we spent in Kaanapali.

We are staying in the Aloha suite here at Kaanapali Shores. Overall, our stay here has been comfortable. The front desk staff is very helpful, friendly, and professional. Grounds are well maintained and beautiful. Two pools and hot-tubs that are not over crowded. I have also read negative reviews of the beach. The beach is lovely and has never been crowded. Yes, there are rocks as you go into the ocean, however that is the charm of the ocean here. It is more of a natural state than having man-made beaches. It is beautiful.

There is a $15 daily amenity fee that really does not carry any value for us, but may for others. They should add access to the gym with this fee to increase its value. The gym is not utilized much and almost always empty. This is too bad as it is a beautiful gym and well equipped.

By staying for over 14 days we were able to get a better deal on the suite as we had once a week housekeeping rather than daily. For some this may not be what they want, but for us it was wonderful not having housekeeping going through your suite daily. We can make our own bed in less than 2 minutes. The only problem we had was calling housekeeping to find out where to put our full garbage one day. The person that answered the phone told us "you do not get any service" and would not tell us what to do with it. I told them, "no problem, we will simply put it in the hallway." They then said they would pick it up. We did find the garbage shoot at the end of the hall and simply went to the front desk for any requests.

The location is excellent, with stores across the street accessible within a 5 minute walk. You can rent a car for part of your trip and pay a daily fee for parking, which we expected. No surprise. If you do not have a car, you can catch the bus right next door. $4 for a daily pass and the bus goes to Whaler Village, and from there to Lahaina. Very easy and fast.

The suite is very well equipped, clean, with wonderful views. All appliances worked well. Many guest has written about the birds being noisy, but I must admit that when you are ocean front you get the continuous noise of the waves. It is not always pleasant, but anytime you go somewhere where you are not used to the noise it will take a bit of adjustment. Just saying.

The Expedia staff and concierge staff are extremely helpful. The thing to remember is to do some homework about what you may want to do before you reach them. We noticed a number of guests that simply walk up and don' know what they want to do. This leaves line-ups and waiting by others why the staff try to read your mind.

Unfortunately, a few negatives. Please keep in mind that these were not things that ruined our vacation, but simply things that management and guests may need to consider.

We paid for the Aloha suite. The largest, oceanfront, and one of the most expensive. Decorated in a Hawaii theme with plenty of wicker, a very dated couch with palm trees and a dirty beige coloring, yellow walls that looked like it would need to be painted in the next 12 months. Also, the yellow color gives it a very dated look. Not fresh or clean. The previous painter did not do a good job as they would paint over the walls without cleaning them or fixing some imperfections. The ceilings are in need of painting and the painters decided to paint a part of the ceiling yellow and then abandoned it. Lazy work. There are no baseboards, so when they vacumm the rug they hit the bottom of the walls chipping away plaster.

We have had plenty of rain and stormy weather, and as a result we noticed how bad the windows are. Even with the balcony windows closed, air rushed through blowing the drapes around. The weather stripping is coming off, causing it to flap in the wind. Should be replaced or fixed.

Get rid of some of the artificial plants in the suite. Way to many and collect dust. Gives it a 60s or 70s feel. Adds to the dating of the suite.

As I stated, I would recommend staying here. What I would not recommend is renting the Aloha Suite. I am sure you can get a less expensive suite that is just as clean but maybe more updated.

After reading some of the reviews on here, I was sort of terrified about what to expect at this hotel. It's not nearly as bad as some people make it out to be - you get what you pay for. It was an average priced hotel with a completely average visit. Nothing was exceptional, nothing was horrible. The location of this hotel is great and very convenient.

We had a studio with kitchen up on the 9th floor. Very beautiful views! Try to request a higher up room.

The staff is fine - they aren't friendly, but I wouldn't classify them as rude either. No "Aloha" as your passing them in the hall, no going out of their way to provide excellent service. But it wasn't horrible either. It was sufficient. The only thing that was somewhat bothersome is that we often got put on hold for a long time when calling down to the front desk for cabs.

The hotel itself is also fine. Nothing special. The beds, as many people have commented, are pretty horrible. Bad mattresses, pill-y sheets with old blankets and one squished pillow. The kitchen has everything you could possibly need (except a toaster - but we used the oven on broil). The bathroom was fine too, but small. It was nice to have the Lanai for breakfast and coffee. If your someone who likes to unpack - good luck. There's only one small dresser beneath the TV with very narrow drawers. And also, as many other reviews state, housekeeping is NOT their thing here. We only had our room serviced twice in the 7 days we were there because it wasn't worth it. They barely even made the bed.

The pool areas are again.. fine. They're small and not glamorous. But if you have a short day for relaxation because you have either plans in the morning or in the evening, it's a nice place to layout for a little while and take a dip. The beach area isn't great at all. Very small and super rocky (but there are another wonderful beaches nearby). The hot tub was nice to have and we went down there a couple times at night after dinner, or after happy hour.

So, if someone got a good rate for this hotel, I would tell them to definitely consider it. For the location and the added money savings of having the kitchen for breakfast and cocktails, this place is definitely worth looking into. If you're looking for a nice luxury, resort, this definitely isn't it. But if you're just looking for a place to relax at the end of the day after trying different area beaches and exploring; with a good location and some added amenities, it'll be perfect for you. The next time we come to Maui, if we're doing another adventure type vacation, I'd consider this hotel (if they get new beds); but if we're coming for more of a relaxation vacation, I'd choose someplace different.

As always a very pleasant stay. The hotel has something to offer for everyone: romantic garden, pools for children, a good restaurant. Everything you need is nearby: restaurants, supermarket, shops and Lahaina and other beaches are also not far away.

Room Tip: The rooms with garden view on the higher floors have partly ocean view

This resort is located in a great location, just a few minutes north of Lahaina and a few minutes south of Kapalua. Close to shopping and golf! The beach is great, not too big, but nice and sandy and larger than several of the resorts nearby. Just be sure to have water shoes because the rocks and reefs can be very sharp! We rented #704 from a private individual using VRBO. The unit had a great view of the ocean with a nice lanai to sit out on to look for whales. We went in January, so we saw lots of whales while sitting out there. Just be sure to bring your binoculars! My only drawback was the maid service. Different units have different maid services. If you rent from someone who uses Trinity Maid Service, do like you would when getting a rental car, go all over the place and make notes of anything that is wrong like carpet stains, mattress stains (yeah, you need to pull back the sheets and look!) anything broken then let the owner know up front asap. We were naive and did not do so, and they accused us of all sorts of stuff that was not true. We got it resolved, but if we rented there again, I probably would ask up front if they used them and if so would not rent!

Room Tip: The lower the number, the closer to the ocean.
