We normally stay at Diamond Resorts Kaanapali Beach Club, but the lack of 2 BR units there, several 2 BR units here combined with family joining us this time to Maui made Aston Kaanapali Shores our destination. We were not disappointed.

Our stay was split in 2, with 4 nights in an Ocean Front unit and 7 in an Ocean View. We were on the top floor of each building - Room 460 first and then Room 852 for the remainder of the stay. Clearly, the ocean front unit was the far better view, and had more room as far as beds since it had a loft, but there was SO much of the owners nic-nacs and furniture in Room 460 that it felt very tight in there. The amenities were nice, including the appliances, and I would not have a problem staying in that room again, but with 5 people it was too snug.

Room 852 did not have a loft, so the 5th person utilized the hide-a-bed in the Living room, but when it was folded up, there seemed to be far more space just because of the clutter free room. The beds in 460 were smaller but more comfortable, and 852 needed a little cosmetic work done by it's owner.

As far as the Aston management side of it, we were very happy with the service we received from every single employee there. Each one was courteous and made every attempt to help when asked, and offered their assistance when they weren't asked. The rooms and public areas were kept clean and we appreciate their efforts.

The pools are not big, but there are two and we did not have trouble getting a chaise lounge any day we tried. Of course, the beach is right there too. The snorkeling is decent right off the shore, but not nearly as good as a dozen other areas nearby like Kapalua Bay or Honolua Bay.

The resort is near a nice little center that has Times grocery, Paradiso Pizza (excellent!) and a few shops and other eateries. Honokawai Okazuya is a block north of the resort and is great - don't miss the Teriyaki Steak. It is all takeout except for a half dozen small tables, so it is perfect for a night in the room. An ABC store is just north too, and that is the closest gas station. There are dozens of restaurants close by, so the Shores is definitely conveniently located.

All in all, we were happy with the resort and it would have been a 5 out of 5 if room #1 had less clutter and room 2 had more comfortable beds. We would certainly entertain staying there again.

Room Tip: Rooms on the north side have better sunset views. Room 460 has a lot of nic-nacs and that limits mo...

We just got back from 10 great days at Kaanapali Shores. We were lucky enough to stay in a two bedroom, two bath ocean front unit, 401. It is impossible to get closer to the Ocean on Kaanapali!! We could see whales and sea turtles right from our wrap-around Lani. My sister and Brother in Law joined us for 7 out of the 10 days. We have been to Maui 6 times now and have stayed at Kaanapali Shores once before in a one bedroom, ocean view some 20 years ago. This particular unit had full views of the ocean from all rooms in the condo, floor to ceiling in the living room and our bedroom. You could hear the waves hitting the shore even with the sliders closed. It came fully equiped in the kitchen (although a second frying pan would have been nice!) with TV's in all rooms (Flat screen in the living room, but old style TV's in the bedrooms). The two bathrooms were also well appointed and there was more closet space than we could have ever used. There never seemed to be a shortage of lounges around either pool and the towel exchange worked fine for us. The only two minor things that I would have liked was a little more shade area (not good to be in the sun too much these days!) and a place to barbeque near the condos.

The desk staff, the cleaning staff and the activities staff were all great and met all our needs without any hesitation. We never ate at the restaurant on site as we went into Lahaina for dinner most nights. We ate breakfast and lunch at the condo most days. (As a side note, we went into the real estate office on site and they handed us a list of the condo's for sale in the complext. Our unit, 401 was up for sale for $1.75 million! Location, Location, Location!) If you want a nice beach right in front of your condo, then this is not the right complex for you as the beach is small and rocky right in front of the complex. However, for a central location, easy to get into Lahaina or up to Kapalua, this was absolutely great and being able to share the cost with another couple gave us the ability to be right on the ocean. Hard to beat! If you have a costco card you can stop right outside the airport to stock up for your stay and if not, there is a Foodland and a Safeway right in Lahaina as well as a market right across the street from the entrance to the complex. (I remember our first trip to Maui 29 years ago when the Foodland was the only game in town with limited inventory to boot!) Prices obviously go up the closer you get to the condo but still lots of choices to shop for food and drinks.

Now the experiece that really made our stay outstanding. My sister and Brother in Law were forced to change the date of arrival and departure (family problem) which created an issue in that we had the two bedroom for 7 days and then My wife and I were set to move into a one bedroom for the last three days. I tried to move things around at the last minute before we left but because of their high bookings, they just couldn't make things work for us. This left us with possibly 4 adults moving into our 1 bedroom. Well, I can tell you that the reservation folks really stepped up to the plate! I went to the front desk the day before we were set to move condos and asked if their was anything they could do. They had me contact their in house reservation staff. I spoke with Kim who could not have been more accomodating. We asked it if was possible that they had another two bedroom available but they didn't. Then I made the BIG request. Was it possible for us to stay put in our incredible unit 401? He looked it up and said we could but the cost was $795 per night. I then asked the second BIG question. Could they let us have the last three days for the same rate as the first 7 ($465 per night)? He was extremely empathetic and told us to please wait a minute and let him check into it. He called me back a few minutes later and said YES! They really had no obligation to help us out and I felt Kim and his supervisor really did go beyond to make the last three days of our stay as great as the first 7. He even called our condo to remind us to update our keys on Sunday and to please let our travel agent know about the switch. Again, a real "Aloha" experience!

I would not hesitate to stay at Kaanapali Shores in the future!

Room Tip: Can't beat the 2 bedroom Ocean Front rooms and with 2 couples, the actual cost is less per coupl...

My family has been to Maui several times, and every time we've stayed at the Aston Kaanapali Shores. We love this place! Every condo we've stayed in has been outstanding, and our most recent stay featured an updated kitchen that was really beautiful. The way the resort is designed, all rooms face out, so there's no threat of a bad view. We've had ocean-view condos and garden-view rooms, and they were all good. The balconies are roomy, so eating meals outdoors is easily accomodated. If you want to relax at the resort, there's plenty to do. And the resort grounds are beautifully landscaped. There's a grocery store across the street, which makes getting food to stock your kitchen a breeze. We appreciate the chance to make meals in our room, which can be a big money saver. Some may find the beach at the resort a bit rocky, but my family is more swim-in-the-pool types, so that isn't a problem. Speaking of pools, there are two. The main, large pool is right next to the ocean. There's also a smaller pool with more shallow areas, which was great for our young daughter. Lahaina is a quick 10-minute drive south. Sure, other parts of the island can be a long drive, but that's the case no matter where you stay on Maui - it's just the nature of the island's layout. If you want a comfortable condo on Maui with a helpful staff, you can't do better than the Aston Kaanapali Shores.

We booked our two 2 bedroom units several months in advance of our stay, requesting that the units be located on the same floor. About a month or so prior to check-in, I emailed them with the same request. They made note of it and asked that we contact them about 5 days before check-in, which we did. Upon arrival, we were told that they had received our request but they are very busy and were not able to accommodate us. There are 2 buildings and at least they did put us in the same building. Our unit was 1001 and the other was 709, (if you are facing the ocean, it was the building on the right). Both units had incredible views of the ocean. We were there the first part of March, which is whale season and we saw some incredible whale sightings from our lanai. The last morning we watched a mother feed her calf for at least 45 minutes very close to the shore. Incredible! We did take a day trip to the island of Lanai and would definitely recommend that. The boat stopped so that we could view the whales when they were sighted (although all boats must stay at least 100 yards from the whales) and we saw huge pods of spinner dolphins that swam right up to our boat. The snorkeling at Lanai is incredible, just like swimming in an aquarium. The coral is brightly colored as are the fish. Beautiful! This is the most incredible snorkeling we've ever done and we've been to Kauai, Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Florida and Aruba. The beach at Mahana is not very wide and the surf was pretty rough so we did not snorkel here, but many others did and said they saw lots of fish and even an octopus and an eel. You do have daily linens, coffee and laundry and dishwasher detergent provided to you during your stay. Had I known this, I would not have packed it. I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a floor on an upper level. The view is spectacular!

Friendly staff and accommodated our request to move to a studio with a better view on the 7th floor. WIFI didn't work but we were on vacation so didn't really care, just didn't wish there was the extra $15 amenity fee, maybe they should just hide it in the price. Restaurant was great, pools very nice. Beach out front has been washed away but there are plenty of awesome beaches to visit by car on Maui. We had a studio and it was perfect for the 2 of us. Grocery is right across the street with a couple of restaurants. Lots of whales and turtles to watch at sunset. Parking is limited in Ka'anapali so there is a $10/day parking fee as well. We may look at booking in Kihei for next time to avoid the extra fees. This hotel seems to really family friendly so if you are looking for adult peace and quiet, this might not be the place for you. Great for families travelling together.

This hotel is right across the street from a good grocery store (Times Market) and the local bus in to Lahaina so it is not necessary to rent a car. The room was very clean and the hotel pool and hot tub were well cared for. There are a number of decent restaurants within walking distance of Kaanapali Shores....we felt the best one was Duke's located beachfront throughout a public park just south of the Kaanapali Beach Club which is right next door to the Aston Kaanapali Shores. In front of the Beach Club is also the bus stop to Lahaina - just walk right as you come out of the lobby across the parking lot and you will see the bus stop sign next door. Good views of humpback whales and green turtles from the beach front. We booked this hotel through a package vacation so I am not sure how the cost worked out!

Our family of three (the two of us and our three year old son) stayed at Kaanapali Shores from Feb 12-26, 2013. At best it was overpriced, at worst it was filthy.

We booked an "Ocean View" 1 bedroom suite, and leading up to the trip we tried requesting a room near the ocean side of the building; all along we were told that they would try to accomodate our request but wouldn't guarantee anything. The room we were put in upon arrival was technically "ocean view", in that we could see the ocean, but most of our view was of the
parking lot. This in itself, coupled with the dated decor, was disappointing, but upon looking over the room, we found that it was actually filthy, and appeared to have been poorly cleaned for years. For example, in the bathroom there was some kind of build up on the walls and thick dust
covering the vents - very obvious things that should have been cleaned on a regular basis but obviously had not been.

Had we been able to find another hotel on short notice we likely would have moved, but in high season this was not possible. We had one of the managers come up so we could show her what we were talking about, and during the course of discussing with her what our options were, she abruptly walked out of the room. Yes we were upset and a little heated, but she was just as
heated and had no real solutions for us then. Her only other option was a room with a worse view that she herself said we would not find to be any better or cleaner than the one we were in.

By a couple of hours later, they had found us a cleaner room, which also had a much nicer view, so with no real option to go anywhere else, we stayed. However, this room was still not terribly clean - as evidenced by the long black hairs left on the locked closet doors in the bathroom.

The next day we spoke to the Rooms Division manager, who was very understanding of our concerns and offered us a goodwill credit on our room and restaurant bill, and also spoke to housekeeping to have the room properly cleaned. However, after the first time housekeeping did their "deep clean", we were not convinced, as the same hairs were still on the closet door, as
well as a large clump of hair in the bed sheets. We had the Rooms Division manager up to the room to show him, and he once again had housekeeping do a better cleaning, after which it appeared to our eyes to be at least decently clean. However, we had our son sleep on a rollaway bed rather than the sofa bed, as we were uneasy about what might be living in the sofa bed.

Throughout our stay we saw other evidence of low cleaning standards, such as the same piece of garbage remaining in the corridor for days.

The other major drawback for us with this hotel was the lack of a beach. On the website there are photos of a decent sized sand beach, but what we found was a tiny beach (i.e. non-existant at high tide), full of rocks. Very misleading. This forced us to go elsewhere to find usable beaches.

We did make a lot of use of the oceanside pool area, though if we had not had a three year old to wake us up to get down there right for 8 o'clock opening, finding pool chairs would have been difficult. The hottub did not always appear to be terribly clean.

Poolside food/drinks service was slow at times, but seemed to be due to not having enough staff on at busy times. We found the food to be average - for example, the macadamia nut pancakes did not have actual macadamia nuts in or on top of them, they were just made from a mix that apparently had macadamia nuts ground up in it.

The one bedroom suite was a decent size, and definitely bigger than what you would get in neighbouring hotels at higher prices, which is really the only reason we didn't book at a place like the Westin Villas, which would have been something like a minimum of $400 a night for a garden view studio as opposed to $300 a night for a 1 bedroom ocean view at Kaanapali Shores. It was also nice to have a washer and dryer in the suite. The kitchen appeared to have been recently updated and was in good shape, though the placement of electrical outlets meant having to move the toaster and coffee maker to somewhat odd places to plug them in.

Bellmen were happy to help us load our luggage and groceries up to our room when we checked in, but stood and watched us load all of our luggage into our rental Jeep when we were leaving without so much as offering to help, other than offering to take our picture after we had loaded everything already.

Positives? If you're in the right room (only by luck of the draw apparently) the view is lovely - saw plenty of whales, once very close off shore as we watched the sunset. The hotel is located close to amenities such as a grocery store and convenience store.

Overall, not a very good experience. The worst part is that there seems to be a lack of pride in taking care of the place and providing quality service to guests. The one manager who did make the effort to try to make our experience better has moved on to a new job in Honolulu, while the manager who walked out on us is still there as far as I know.

Our housekeeping department cleans over 120,000 rooms each year. While theyare known for doing a very good job in general, it goes without saying that by the law of averages, there will be an occasion where the cleaning doesn't meet the individual guest's expectations. If/when that happens, we apologize and address the issues that are brought to our attention with the team members who were responsible for that specific room.

With the above said, it is important to share some additional information in this case, because this guest referred our recently departed rooms division manager specifically. The manager the guest refers to kept a record of this encounter which reflects that his inspection revealed a very difficult to see a folicle of hair that could have been easily missed and that he was in disbelief over the guest's reaction to the condition of the unit, which he found to be clean. Naturally, in an effort not to create confrontation with the guest at that point and because we try to do everything we can to accommodate guests needs/desires, though he personally didn't feel the concern was valid, he arranged to have an additional cleaning take place on the unit.

In the end, our team went out of their way to re-clean the unit for these guests. We're sorry that our housekeeper missed the tiny hair that was brought to our attention and that our efforts didn't meet the guests expectations, but don't feel that their representation of events is fair and wanted to provide the additional background in this regard.

With respect to the beach, winter ocean swells had taken their toll on the beach over the last month or so, but it has already started to rebuild and we expect it to be back to its more normal size/level soon.

Mahalo.
