“What's happening at The Shores?”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

A 45 minute drive across the island from the airport brought us to the Aston Ka'anapali Shores resort. The road is very good but don't be surprised if you come to a dead stop on the highway. Beach turn offs often slow traffic down to zero.
We rented a one bedroom unit. It had a king sized bed and a fold out couch so four people would have been quite comfortable.
The full kitchen had enough equipment that we were able to cook most anything we fancied although they were unable to supply us with a tea pot. Who knew they don't drink tea in Hawaii?
The only condiment supplied in the kitchen was sugar in packages, no salt,
pepper or other seasonings.
We opted not to have daily housekeeping as that incurred an "amenity fee". Daily housekeeping would have resupplied our coffee, detergent and dish washing soap but a trip across the street to Times supermarket got us everything we needed. If we needed more towels or toilet paper, we just needed to phone the desk and they would send it right up.
Parking for our rental car was not included and cost us $9/daily.
The stretch of beach directly behind us was disappointing, being rather narrow and rocky but a 5 minute walk along the beach takes you to a gorgeous stretch of the Ka'anapali beach. The AKS has a regular swimming pool and a three ft. deep one for the smaller guests, hydro pools and a big sunning lawn all surrounded by their beautifully tended central garden.
The garden hosts The Beach Club restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
For early risers, there is an little coffee kiosk in the lobby that serves it's first cup at 6 a.m. and closes at 10 a.m.
The AKS is close enough to Lahaina town so shopping for forgotten items won't cost you an arm and a leg. We found the local shops comparable in price to Lahina town
The Expedia local expert located in the lobby was extremely helpful and dealing with her got us a few discounts on our excursions. We never felt pressured or that she was trying to up-sell us. (Thanks, Kim!)
The complimentary Wi-Fi was one of the best I've used. I would avoid the InternetCenter unless absolutely necessary as it is run by an independent company and they charge by the minute.

Room Tip: If you want an unobstructed view of the ocean to whale watch from your balcony, choose 4th floor or...

Service is not the strong suit of this hotel. I think I signed or initialed 4 or 5 times at check in to acknowledge the amenity fee ($10/ day), the parking fee ($9/ day) and just how much the bill would be. I am not a fan of nickel and dining. Room was as advertised. Older physical plant. Nice gardens. Kitchen (although while plenty of dishes and silverware, not many cooking utensils) adequate. Communal barbecue which closes at 8 pm. Think you are on the famous kanapaali beach? Think again. To call this hotels beach a beach is a bit of a stretch. A strip if sand or a spit of sand. Check in staff rude. Housecleaning staff rude 50 percent of the time. Check out staff fine. Pool side restaurant price ok, food ok, service mediocre. View from the beach spectacular. I think for the price in overpriced maui/kanapaali during high season, it's ok. I doubt I would stay here again. But the hotel is full right now.

Due to recent weather patterns and the surf that came as a result of them, the beaches along the Ka'anapali coastline have been impacted. This is not a new phenomenon, and as it has done every year in the past, it is expected to return to its more normal expanse within weeks.

Our registration process is fairly routine as resorts in Hawaii go. We're sorry these visitors found this cumbersome.

Wow! Rude staff comments. We're not sure what interaction might have led up to this kind of comment, but it is extremely rare to see a comment like this. Our service team includes some of the kindest, warmest folks, who truly believe in the spirit of "aloha." Everyone can have a bad day, but even that is rare with this group. We'll look into what might have happened...

Our apologies to these folks for not having met their expectations....

We stayed in suite 360 and it was beautiful! Lovely furnishings and a million dollar view of the ocean and the main pool. There were 2 bedrooms, a full kitchen, 2 bathrooms, a washer/dryer and a large, wrap-around couch with a pull out bed. There was no housekeeping service, which we actually enjoyed, but if you like your beds made and the room cleaned everyday, then that might be an issue for you. The suite was fully stocked with everything we needed, and it was nice to be able to eat in a few nights. There is a grocery store directly across the street, but it is a little expensive so we mostly went down to the Safeway in Lahaina. We watched whales from the balcony and the master bedroom window, which was quite a treat. The grounds are lush and beautifully maintained and the staff is very friendly. The reason for the 4 stars is that the beach here is not as nice as beaches you could drive to....there is very little sand and there are quite a few rocks, so if you're looking for a great beach for the kids, you'll have to look elsewhere. But the pool is fantastic and warm. Ka'anapali also seemed windier and more overcast than downtown Lahaina (maybe just the time of year?), which is not the fault of the hotel, but made it so that we spend more time away from the hotel than I would have thought. But the accommodations are fantastic. Would highly recommend staying here, especially with kids.

Room Tip: Suite 360 had a spectacular view and was beautifully updated. The owner stocked it with everything...

The staff was very pleasant and helpful. Evenings around the hot tubs and pool are quite sociable with many people from different places conversing. The on site restaurant has reasonably priced, good food, although the service is a little slow. Across the street and in the neighborhood are several dining options as well as a farmers market. The area is safe band a great place to walk. The beach is very nice and the waves do not overwhelm. One of the best vacations I have ever had. Jimonthedrive

This resort was amazing. We stayed here on a family trip (my parents, my sister, my husband and me). We had a 2 bedroom suite with an ocean view. This room had 2 bathrooms, 2 balconies, a full kitchen, washer/dryer and a hide-a-way bed. The resort had 2 pools, 2 hot tubs, free movie rentals, great service and is along the beach.

We watched several whales breach, fin slaps, etc. I wish we stayed here longer.

The only bad comment is about the birds getting quite loud at night but I didn't mind the sound of nature.

Highly recommend this place. I WOULD stay here again over and over.

We spent 10 nights in January, 2013 and had a blast. Kaanapali Shores is a great place to stay for family. They provide studios, one, two , and three bedroom rentals. We stayed in a one bedroom with our two kids and it was great! We were on the 4th floor and had a view of the garden and the ocean. Our unit (and other units) have been upgraded and the kitchen and bathroom countertops were granite with new cabinets for both. There is tile floors and new carpet in the living room and bedroom. There is a full bath with a linen closet inside the bathroom. Our room had a king size bed and good closet space with a combination safe inside. The living room has a big sectional sofa that folds out into a queen size bed. We had washer and dryer as well. Each balcony has a lounge chair and two chairs to enjoy the outside air! The living room and bedroom both have flat screen tv s. The living room tv has playstation 3 and dvd player. When our dvd did not work, maintenance staff came right away and set a brand new dvd for us. That is service and the kids were extremely happy. When we did not know how to align our screen doors to start the air conditioning, maintenance came up right away to show us. We are definitely impressed with the service staff. The full size kitchen came with all the stuff you will need to cook with and has full size fridge. The walls seem to be thick enough as we did not hear our neighbours or hear too much from above. This helps when our kids were yelling at each other!

This resort has two pools and is right on the beach. The garden pool is more shallow and has a great big green space to sit or play catch. The beach pool has access right to the beach and is connected to the bar and restaurant . Both pools have a good sized hot tub to warm up in. From the beach, you can see whales jumping. Cabanas are also for rent for reasonable rate. At the beach side pool, you can sign up for a free scuba lesson (my daughter who is 11 loved it). The bar has great drinks and the restaurant has great food for great price. Breakfast is awesome. The lunch menu is great if you don't want to go back to your place to cook and just order at the pool. Their fish tacos are great for lunch and the kids menu is abundant with great pricing. On Wednesdays, they have a hula show with punch at the poolside and its great to watch. On Thursdays, they have local artists bring in their crafts to sell in the lobby area. Great souvenir shopping. On top of that, there are two dvd rental kiosks for nominal fee of the most recent movies. Great for winding down at night with the kids.

The property is also just across from Times super market where you can get all your groceries within walking distance. Along the strip mall, there is a pizza place, a cafe and a Mexican restaurant. The walk is literally 5 minutes. Very convenient.

There are two tennis courts and shuffle board and a pickle ball court. By the courts, there are bbqs for you to use. If you need anything, there is also stores within the resort that you can use . THe gym is good for a workout if you want and there is also a spa.

Room Tip: Higher floors have ocean view. If you can , do not do parking lot. Yes, there are birds that gathe...

We stayed 10 nights, had a wonderful time. Staff was very pleasant and helpful. We ate at The Beach Club the food and service were excellent, pricing no more than driving somewhere else. We had a studio and would stay here again. We watch lots of turtles and whales from our chair at the beach. Can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: Don't hesitate requesting the staff is winderful.
