Garden Gate Bed and Breakfast
Ranked #8 of 11 Lahaina B&B and Inns
Reviewed August 27, 2008

We stayed 2 nights in the Ocean View room (top floor).

First the pros:
the house was well maintained and painted in beautiful, happy colors (orange & white)
a spacious, clean room
spacious, clean bathroom with jacuzzi
large, clean closet/wardrobe
AC and fan worked perfectly
wonderful, large (but not private) deck with great ocean and islands views - fantastic sunsets!
good working (free) high speed internet access
less expensive than a hotel

Unfortunately there were quite some cons too:
situated in an average residential area
not enough parking space for all guests
we didn't see much of the inn keepers; it was kind of difficult to communicate with Bill, because he doesn't seem to hear very well. Jaime wasn't too friendly: she even turned her head when my wife encountered her!
the bed wasn't very comfortable: a bit too hard with a "bump" in the middle
the rooms are noisy/thin-walled; we could very well hear the other guests talking (and such!) in their rooms, the moment they used their jacuzzi was the moment we had to put in our earplugs!
no pool
very, very poor "continental" breakfast; only some pastries cut into small pieces and strange flavoured coffee. Come early or you will miss it - NO restocking! On the other hand, come late - it's BETTER to miss breakfast in the Garden Gate! Oh, and no breakfast in the weekend... isn't that kind of weird in a "Bed & Breakfast"?

What bothered us the most though, was the fact that someone snooped around in our room. We knew and accepted we wouldn't get any service, so we left our suitcases and stuff unlocked in our room. We left the first morning and returned later in the afternoon and it was very obvious that someone had been in our room; even our bedlinen was touched; we left the bedlinen in a certain way (I admit: on purpose) and it was very different when we returned: we both immediately noticed it upon entering the room. We don't like people (even the owners) in our room, unless - of course - to make the bed, change the bedlinen, change the towels or remove the trash from the trash can... BUT none of those things were done!! What had they been doing in our room then? We went down and asked Bill about this and he said it must have been the cleaning girl... Nothing was cleaned though. It was really difficult to communicate with Bill, so we decided to let it go - not very satisfying.

All in all, our stay was a mixed experience of good and bad things. I guess that, next time, we will look for another place to stay on Maui.

Staying at the Garden Gate does the trick if you wish to stay away from big Hotels on the coast.
However do not expect to interact with owners or to be in a charming room in an actual house. The Garden Gate is what we call "a disguised hotel". Upon entering on the premixes through a gate (The Garden Gate) you will be redirected to the back of the house where an extention was build. You need to ring the bell at "the office door" (Clearly stated on the door, with "office hours") Someone will then greet you and show you the room.
Though the bedroom was quite clean, it was a simple "hotel" room: one bed, one tv, bathroom, barely no sunlight. No charm at all and very tiny.
Breakfast is ok. Good pastries, coffee tastes a bit weird (Vanilla flavor but then again this is the traditional coffee so if you care for dark coffee, go to Starbucks). Time frame for breakfast is a bit rough (1h) and when the first tray of pastry is out, no replenishment. In other words, get there at 8:30 sharp!
If you are looking to interact with your host, forget it. There was a lady there, but she seemed a bit out of it, and the gentleman was there during breakfast only.
Now, the Garden Gate is quiet, well located, clean and cheaper than hotels. You can do laundry on the premises (3 bucks) and you can use beach accessories. You also get some nice info (print-up awaiting for you in the bedroom) about the area, places to go and where to eat (discount at a very good seafood restaurant!). The "hosts" can make arrangements for you to go to a luau, or else...
So all in all, compare to the cost of other places, this place was ok for us, it did fit our budget and expectations. However if you are truly looking for a B&B, then this is not it. :-)

I stayed at the Garden Gate Bed and Breakfast in March 2008. It was a gorgeous place with lovely gardens and a nice breakfast provided. My room was a little small but I did have the smallest of all the rooms. The other rooms looked bigger. It was a short walk to the beach and a 20 min walk either way to Lahaina or Kanaapali. It was very reasonably priced for the location and the staff were very friendly and accomodating. I was alone on my last night and a bit lost for ideas of where to go and Justin (one of the staff members) took me on a tour of the nightlife in Lahaina...very kind. I would recommend this B and B. It was clean and quiet. I would highly recommend it to my family and friends should they travel to Maui.

Positives: The Garden Gate Bed & Breakfast was a little less than what we had expected but overall was quite happy with our accommodation. When we first arrived we were shown to our room by Bill who informed us that we would be receiving an upgrade in a couple of days (as we were staying there a week), however this did not eventuate- we were a little disappointed but I am sure it was not deliberate. The rooms were clean & comfortable, however we did notice that our bed was actually two seperate beds that had been pushed together- however this did not affect us as we were still very comfortable. We very much enjoyed the Pay TV they provided and the magical ocean views, which we took advantage of with a glass of wine on the balcony. There was also a hammock in the gardens which we very much enjoyed also. The Gardens were beautifully maintained & they also provide a BBQ for you to use whenever you like. Which we used for our dinners (steak & salad anyone? :-) Jaime & Bill were very friendly & generous. They also provide coolers & beach chairs, which we used all the time & very much made our holiday even better.
Negatives: Breakfasts...they do only provide a small variety of fruit & pastries. As I have a gluten intolerance I could not eat the pastries. One morning there was only a platter of pineapple & a couple of grapes served with pastries. I did not think this was good enough for a 'breakfast' and if I could offer some helpful critisism it would be to open the selection a little more for breakfast. Even just to have some eggs is not much extra in cost for the owners but I am sure would provide a large appreciation for the guests. We were also dissappointed they did not serve breakfast on weekends.
WIRELESS INTERNET - The internet only works outside therefore, you cannot sit in your room to use it (this was the case for us anyway)- we did not find it to be a big deal - however some people may.
DIRTY MUGS - They provided coffee which was nice however when we used our coffee mugs they were never washed & replaced the entire week we were there. We also had nothing to wash it with.
However overall the stay was pleasant and we have fond memories of the Garden Gate & would happily recommend it & revisit ESPECIALLY if the breakfasts improve.

In our opinion, staying in a B&B means having different expectations from a hotel. Expect at minimum a clean and safe room, a little something to eat in the morning, and maybe some interesting interactions with the locals. Anything more than that makes it exceptional, and each B&B reflects the quirks of its owner.

Staying in a B&B can also be a way to economize. Check prices on Orbitz, Expedia, etc, and you will see that hotels are very expensive in Maui. We stayed in the Garden Gate B&B for three nights in April 2008; it is a clean, somewhat lower priced accommodation that may or may not meet your needs. Here are some of our observations based on our stay there.

1) THE BREAKFAST. In our opinion, calling it a B&B is a stretch -- breakfast is served for ONE hour on WEEKDAYS only, even though the room rate on weekends is the same as weekdays. As other reviewers have pointed out, the continental breakfast consists of some fruit, a few ordinary store bought pastries and bagels (all cut into halves or quarters), juice and coffee. Since there is nothing complicated or special about what's offered, why not just put out the same modest spread on Saturday & Sunday so you can call yourself a B&B legitimately?

2) THE ROOM. We stayed in the Lanai Room, which was amply sized. It was clean, though with some old, quirky fixtures, such as the pitted shower head and the shower hose which only sprayed on super-full volume. The mattress was indented from previous users and was too soft for our preference; but others may like a soft bed. Our room had two glass walls and opened onto a large lanai with a gorgeous ocean view. But WATCH OUT -- anyone else using the lanai looked right into our bedroom and other guests lounged here at various times of the day and night during our stay. So, we basically had to keep the blinds closed tight most of the time. Another guest even admitted being flustered when she went to sit on the lanai and saw our tv on through the sliding door, suddenly realizing it was a guest room, and slinking away embarrassed. (A good warning, too, because she and her husband were moving into that room after we left!)

3) THE AMENITIES. The kitchenette is an odd, incomplete assortment -- full coffee setup (pot, coffee packets, filters, sugar, creamers) but no coffee cups. (*see more below about that) There were 2 wine glasses, but they were too tall to fit under the sink faucet. There was nothing to get a glass of water -- no water glasses, not even paper cups. There were, bowls, plates and one steak knife, but no spoons or forks. The fridge inside was ok, but the gasket had some mold and food debris on it.
(*coffee cups: on day 2, my husband discovered 2 grunge-encrusted coffee mugs on the lanai from previous guests. We put them on the lanai table, and others moved them around but nobody took them away during our stay.)

4) THE NEIGHBORHOOD. As other reviewers have pointed out, it's off the beaten path --a short drive (vs walk) from the beaches and restaurants. We actually PREFER that in a vacation accommodation -- nice to have peace and quiet -- so this was a positive for the Garden Gate. But you'll have to consider if that's your style.

5) THE PROPERTY. Although it's in a modest, tightly packed residential neighborhood, the grounds are quite beautiful. There is lush tropical vegetation, and it is well lit at night. Through a frame of colorful flowers, you can see the sun set over the ocean from the lanai. (as long as you're fully dressed ...)

6) MISCELLANEOUS OTHER STUFF. There are two cute little dogs in residence -- very friendly and well behaved. Like other reviewers, we didn't know how to get towels refreshed, but we discovered that putting used towels in the basket in the bathroom yielded fresh towels the next day. Perhaps a note to guests explaining how to get fresh towels would minimize confusion?

7) THE PEOPLE. We can't comment on the hospitality of our hosts simply because we barely interacted. Bill was the only one we met (we had to ask him his name after introducing ourselves) and saw him only twice: for 5 minutes while checking in and once briefly on our way out to dinner. There was a polite young man who answered when we rang the office doorbell, but he never introduced himself. We were OK with this, though, because we really didn't need their assistance.

THE BOTTOM LINE. This is not a luxury accommodation, it is a budget accommodation (though with a slightly higher-than-budget rate) Understand that, and you're more likely to be satisfied. If you want the amenities and consistency offered by larger commercial establishments, you may want to pay the extra bucks and go to one of the nearby resorts.

We appreciate reviews from all of our guests, good and bad. We know that as a business we are always striving to be the best that we can possibly be, and with constructive criticism, we can improve and grow for the better.

Our customers experiences with us, are very important. Please know that when you do plan on staying with us, please read specific information on our website, so you do not feel cut short.

To justify the negative statements by a previous guest. Beginning with our "continental breakfast." That is served only on Mondays through Fridays at 8:30 - 9:30AM.

In reply to the guests remark about "a few ordinary store bought pastries," I say that these are no "ordinary pastries." Every morning we go to the same high end bakery where freshly baked pastries are served, with utter excellence by the wonderful staff at "The Bakery," owned by Herald, located at l991 Limahana Pl # D Lahaina, HI 96761.

Also stated in the review, "why not just put out the same modest spread on Saturday & Sunday so you can call yourself a B&B legitimately?"

Well, we are not a hotel, we are neither the Ritz Carlton or four seasons that offer 24/7 meal service. We simply state on our website, complimentary breakfast is served only on Mondays through Fridays at 8:30 - 9:30AM. According to your description of what is considered a legitimate bed and breakfast, we far surpass the expectations of our customers, within your travel price range. If you do not prefer pastries we have alternatives.

In reply to the remarks about the Lanai rooms mattress. We purchased a new mattress four months ago for this room. It is an expensive medium to firm mattress. We have these in several of our rooms. We had previous complaints that these mattresses are too firm, but we cannot please everyone, although we try our best.

The statement about the private Lanai, we put a partisan up to block guests from going on to the private deck. So in other words, there is a divide separating the public deck from the Lanai's private room deck.

In reply to the comments about the lack of newly refreshed towels in our rooms. We are not a large hotel, and we try to be ecologically conservative. There are water shortages throughout Hawaii. If you really do need more towels let us know, just ask.

In reply to the comments directed towards our staff. We are not intrusive people, after meeting our guests. We are friendly and accommodating at first introduction. If someone needs information or is chatty, we are always available at breakfast. If not then, we can be found by knocking on our front door. Do not hesitate to ask us any question at any time.

We are a small bed and breakfast. This is ideal for people that are looking for a more intimate smaller setting, hopefully we can satisfy your expectations.

We just got back from Maui yesterday and I wanted to share with everyone what a nice experience we had at the Garden Gate in Lahaina. We got so much more than we expected. We were lucky enough to get a free upgrade to a King room with an ocean view. Beautiful. You can watch the sunset from the upper decks. WOW The B&B is in a quiet, residential neighborhood - and we loved not being in the middle of the resort areas (if you want this, stay at a large resort in Kaanapali) You do sacrifice not being right on the beach or the water -but we thought it was worth the trade off for the quiet & privacy we wouldn't have had at a larger place.

The room was nice, a little dated, but clean and comfortable. Everyone was very friendly & helpful. I also appreciated the free beach chairs, snorkel gear, coolers and games.

The one thing that was a little disappointing (and just odd) was that they did not serve breakfast on Saturday & Sunday. With our activity & flight schedule, this meant we never got to take advantage of breakfast (isn't this part of the appeal of a B&B?)

There is a great little park just down the street on the water. Just a quick walk down hill. We went there and saw some turtles up close and personal. Also, we were able to see whales using the binoculars they provided - from our private lanai.

I would recommend Garden Gate - but would suggest asking for one of the ocean view rooms - WORTH IT!
