“Helpful but room for improvement”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 9, 2012

Very nice and out of the way helpful hosts especially when it came to recommendations or borrowing things from the main house. Pretty good property location in relation to downtown lahaina (5 min drive out of residential neighborhood).
The surroundings were quiet but there were some real noise issues in the room. Let me caveat that I am sensitive to these thing but there were problems. The refrigerator was loud to the point that I would have unplugged it if the defrost wouldn't have made a mess. The a/c was very loud. Lots of rattling which I was partially able to fix by adjusting the front plate. Even the fan overhead made more noise than it should have.
The room was clean and had some space but things were fine, not "nice". Just about at expectations for a moderately priced b&b.
The mattress felt old and VERY soft so if you like a firm mattress beware.
Really nitpicking here but the outlets were very loose which mean iPhone chargers slipped out or would not close the circuit so we had some charging issues.
Toilet ran and owner gave it attention after the issue was brought up.
Easy policy around beach wares was good.
While wifi was advertised it did not work in our room only the common areas and we were cautioned that sometimes it doesnt even work at all.
They have a very nice dog that does not bark or get overexcited around guests.
Pretty property with plenty of parking.

This B&B was everything that we hoped for. No worries about our early check-in, the owner were there and got us our room that was just being cleaned right away. First we stayed at the cheapest smallest room that, however, had everything that we needed. For our last two nights we got upgraded to the most expensive room with a sunset above the ocean view right from the bed and jacuzzi in the bathroom. That one was a real bliss. Both rooms were clean and tidy. Breakfast (fruit, pastry, coffee and POG) was at 9 AM which, for us, was the only real downside (too late for us). Thanks to the location in Lahaina, which is a very beautiful town, every major trip except surfing and snorkeling started and ended with a 40 minute drive to/from the center of the island and therefore the breakfast would be better at, for example, 7 AM, but that is, of course, not the Aloha way. Nevertheless, whenever we needed to go out earlier (Ziplining, Road to Hana), we just asked for a breakfast to go and we got it, no problem there. Jeri's Mango bread and Banana bread were amazing! Both the owners were very helpful in planning our Maui activities. Thank you for a wonderful week!

Room Tip: Definitely worth paying extra for the Oceanview Suite. Otherwise, all the rooms are OK.

this is a very quiet and cozy place in Lahaina, Maui. This would be perfect for those who love privacy and would like to stay away from crowded places. But at the same time everything is very close - the beaches and the town.
If you're planning to do more sightseeing, i would recommend to rent a car or a scooter - Garden Gate has a comfortable parking place.
Jeri is a fantastic host, providing you with all the necessary information - places to visit, dine or even to take a helicopter tour - or even is bringing you to the pick-up location for the tour - even in the night time and taking care of you, so you would feel the real Hawaiian hospitality.
I felt there absolutely at home!

My fiancé' and I stayed there a couple of weeks ago for a week.
We had the best time staying there. The room we had was all we needed. It was clean, the staff was very friendly and Jeri was a fantastic host who made sure all our needs were met. Jeri and her husband even came to be our witnesses when we got married on the beach there in Lahania.
The location of The Garden Gate Bed and Breakfast is in a perfect location to get anywhere quickly. The breakfast time is a great time to connect with other couples and talk about their travels and sightseeing highlights. All in all, we will always come back here because it was more of an intimate and romantic setting than the bigger commercial hotels .
The staff is unmatched in friendliness and knowledge of the island. Stay there and enjoy your vacation. Its hard to leave your vacation when you have this good of time.

I am writing this review, in part, to refute the review below titled "you get what you pay for". From the description of the room in that review, it sounds like my wife and I stayed in the same room during July 2012. Let's put this in perspective.

Chances are that if you're considering a stay at GGBB you're a budget conscious traveller. My wife and I deliberately chose a smaller, "standard" room in an attempt to balance out more expensive "treats" during our vacation. We, too, were a little surprised at how compact our room was (and there are indeed more spacious rooms available) but we reminded ourselves of the reason for our choice and thought "well, if we spend any time in the room other than to sleep/&, while in Maui, well, then..." How true.

We wanted a convenient, comfortable, clean, room to come back to after the beaches, hikes, drives, dinners and luaus. GGBB met, or exceed, our expectations on all counts. Even during the time we spent at GGBB we really weren't in our room. The center courtyard is a beautifully landscaped oasis. The breakfast chairs/tables are available for your comfort and use all day (and yes, there is reliable wireless internet). There is a basic selection of snorkeling eqpt available for your use. Or there is a hammock if you simply want to lay around.

The GGBB is well located; an easy short drive or nice walk to Front Street restaurants and luaus. Jeri, the hostess, is helpful in regard to both of those as well assisting with reservations at Old Lahaina Luau (terrific!) months before our arrival, and steering us toward Honu Seafood & Pizza for a late arrival dinner. Honu became the favorite restaurant of our three week vacation on three islands - highly recommended! - "Practice Aloha") Jeri also provided helpful coupons for boxed lunches for our day of scenic driving.

Disappointments? Yes, personally I do prefer individually prepared breakfasts rather than buffets with hard boiled eggs and pastries - but again, if you are a budget minded traveller as I am, I suggest you consider where you are willing to cut corners. For me, "convenient, comfortable, clean" partnered with "friendly, helpful, accommodating" will always trump my desire for eggs over easy.

As for the other reviewer's qualm with the air conditioning, again, consider the owner's need to contain costs - Hawaiian costs - in order to preserve the reasonable rate structure. Our A/C was also turned off, but staying in the same standard room as mentioned, it cooled off quickly. I can't fault the owner/housekeepers for turning the A/C off when I left at 9AM and returned 12 hours later.

Bottom line: book it. It's a house in a quiet residential neighborhood and it has a reputation for filling quickly. If you worry about the "standard" accommodations for too long, you'll get luxury room in Lahaina that you desire - but at 2-3 times the price. If that's your choice, so be it.

But if you're like me, you'd be much better off spending that money in Hawaii in restaurants, boat trips, para sailing, or zip lines. Isn't that why you're vacationing on Maua?

The hosts were helpful (allowing guests to use the BBQ and barrow the family's dishes as well as offering travel-tips over breakfast), but the rooms feel more like an average motel than an elegant hotel or B&Bs with careful attention to decorating or amenities. All-in-all, we found everything "fine" but not great. It is not a fancy place, but a practice base for exploring the area.

We stayed at the Garden Gate for four days during part of our honeymoon. We had a great time -- Jeri was so knowledgable about Maui's beaches, restaurants and attractions and gave us great advice on what to do while we were there. The breakfast is good and the garden is beautiful!

This is not a fancy resort, so no pool with swim up bar-- if that's what you're looking for this is not the place. But personally we thought Garden Gate had a lot more charm and hominess and made for a far more comfortable stay than a big gaudy hotel. You can't beat the location: minutes to Front street shops and restaurants and gorgeous beaches. We would definitely recommend Garden Gate!
