Ma'la is a busy little place right on the water. With great views if you are lucky enough to score a table on the deck, and good views otherwise, Ma'la serves up some wonderful fish as well as one of the best burgers I've ever had. You can't go wrong here - get a reservation, or be prepared to wait!

On this trip we have already eaten at Ma'la twice for lunch. If you want a waterfront table and no wait, try an early lunch. This quaint little spot has a great selection of tasty dishes. We had the Balinese tofu stir fry (order it to your preferred level of spiciness), and received a generous portion of rice and flavorful stir fry. We shared a small plate of their home cured olives--again, excellent. Don't go if you are looking for a white table cloth, sparsely furnished, intimate dining experience. But for great food, ocean wave ambience, casual dress, and a friendly atmosphere, Ma'la can't be beat. We aren't locals, but we have always had the friendliest service. (Thanks, Britiney.)

There are so many good reviews for most good restaurants. But then the few who totally hate a place make you doubt it's potential. We were looking for a special "last night on the water with good fish" dinner for 3 adult kids. We knew it would be pricey ($35-$45 and entree). I called and was given reservations for five at 5:30, about an hour before sunset. Located out of the busy tourist part of Lahaina, when you park it may look like "just a tavern" and no place for a fabulous meal. We arrived 15 minutes early and were immediately shown to one of the four, small tables, with tall chairs, with the sea right out the big open windows. There is more seating indoors and along the bar. A rolling screen over each window helps you regulate how much of the afternoon light is actually shining on you. Our wait help, from start to finish was quick, charming, and attentive. The initial serving of chips and an interesting dip did have stale chips. After that things got much better fast. We ordered the ahi bruschetta: great bread, fresh local greens, and ahi that melts in your mouth. Two orders of market fish (snapper that night), beautifully presented (check the menu for details) and absolutely fresh and delicious. The boys ordered the mixed fish pasta special, requesting extra spicy. This came in a red sauce that was one of the best dinning experiences ever. The mixture of flavors was amazing. Daughter ordered their cheeseburger, also excellent. We were having so much fun watching the sea turtles poking their heads out of the water nearby, and watching the sunset that we extended the dinner with desert. We ordered the hot dish Caramel Miranda to share, which is good, but not worth $20 and a chocolate brownie/ice cream desert of the day that was to die for. With one draft beer and one mai tai (both excellent) the bill was $300. Was it worth it? Absolutely! We would do it again. This place does attract repeat customers. You will like it.

Very rude host, we didn't have a reservation so they wouldn't seat us at 4:45pm, and the place had only 2 people seated. Went to the bar area to find their happy hour was from 3 to 4:30. I would not put this place on any list.

We (my husband and 2 teenage daughters) thought this restaurant was great - with a location right on the water and an interesting selection of food (lots of Indonesian influences). The appes were great as were the fish dishes. I had a salad/with chicken along with an appe for my meal and I didn't love the salad but everything else was good. I found the wait staff friendly enough. The restaurant was very busy so I would highly recommend reservations.
