This was the first place we stayed upon our arrival from the mainland. We got there late at night, but there was a welcoming note on the door for us directing us to our rooms. We traveled with our 19 year old daughter so had booked two rooms. We couldn't decide which one to take, both were so lovely. The outdoor showers were incredible--so indulgent, to listen to the birds sing while you shower. Each large room had its own lanai, both in the shade, both entirely private. Dan and Amy were both very helpful. Dan booked our whale watch trip and advised us on restaurants. The home itself is absolutely gorgeous, beautifully decorated and full of wood mouldings, beautiful, high gloss floors and ponds on either side of the hallways- just incredibly lovely. We had take out the second night, being tired from our long flight. Dan gave us plates and we ate on the table in the main room- it felt like we were in our own home, only prettier!! We only hope the rest of our stay will be as nice on the other islands!!!

My husband and I spent 5 nights at this beautiful place last week of December this year. We did have a great time and loved everything about the house. The Bali decor, spectacular views, very spacious rooms, breakfast, and particularly the outdoor shower in our room. There are 6 rooms and believe me, you don't even see other guests that often - privacy is not even an issue.

Amy and Dan do a great job running this place and their recommendations (activities, restaurants etc) were right on. It in a great location - the closest beach is a few minutes drive away. Downtown in Lahaina is another 5-10 min. drive, which is not bad at all. If you want to hang out with the crowd and/or go to Black Rock -Dig Me Beach (where all the resorts and activites are) -- that is really close, too. We did spent teh last 3 nights of our trip at Hyatt Regency Maui and I can tell you that Ho'oilo House definitely was our favourite!

My girlfriend and I stayed here for six nights at the beginning of November. Let me start off by saying we are not B&B people. But this place has definitely changed our perspective. The location just south of Lahaina was perfect for all of our day trips around the island. We also enjoyed driving back from dinner at night under the stars and avoiding the masses at the larger chain hotels at Kaanapali. And the panoramic view of the Pacific and the island of Lanai from their location in the foothills of the west Maui mountains was spectacular at all times during the day particularly at sunset.

As mentioned in many other reviews, Amy and Dan provide the perfect balance in their hospitality. They are there when you need them and are happy to provide recommendations and advice when asked. And yet when you want your privacy they seem to know that too.

The layout of the house is quite nice as well. The rooms are all well separated and share the central common area. It really does give you the feeling of living in your own private Maui home.

We are not the type of people who vacation in the same place twice, but if we do go back to Maui, there is no question that we would stay here again.

We got married here, actually at the beach just down the road. Amy and Dan were absolutely fantastic. They have a great balance of being there when you need them and giving you the feeling the entire B & B is your home.

The rooms and grounds were emaculate. Breakfast was fresh and delicious.

You definitely need a rental car because Lahaina is a five minute drive away, but it's Maui and driving around in a convertable is almost a must!!!!

Amy and Dan made our time before, during and after our Wedding very memorable.

Definitely be back for an Anniversary.

My husband and I decided to research b&b's in Maui to save a little money and to avoid the crowds of families at resorts, so that our honeymoon was a relaxing and romantic trip. We ended up planning to stay at the Ho'olio House for the first half of our honeymoon, and then in a cottage at a well-rated resort on the other side of the island for the rest of our trip. We thought we were saving the best for last.

When we got to the Ho'olio House, we felt very comfortable. The house and our room were gorgeous. We were close enough to Lahaina to go out and try different restaurants every night, and we found a great beach with free parking for the day. We also tried out Trilogy snorkeling, which was a great experience. When we were looking around the area, we were so glad we had a "home" to return to, seeing all the construction of new resorts.

The outdoor shower was wonderful, and the breakfast was simple- but very satisfying and healthy. Reading reviews had prepared us for what to expect, and we were very pleased. The Ho'olio House is for people who want their own private place to stay on Maui, and who do not mind planning their own activities. It was perfect for us -- we felt we were able to experience Hawaii without feeling like tourists.

I could go on and on about how wonderful the Ho'oilo House is, but this will tell enough--- when we left to go to the luxury resort on the other side of the island, we quickly cancelled our last night there, and called Dan to see if we could come back to spend our last night in Maui at the Ho'olio House. Luckily, there was an opening, and we were able to return. One night at an overpriced resort was enough to remind us how lucky we were to have found the Ho'olio House.

We miss it- and I can only hope we can return for anniversaries! Thanks, Ho'olio House for a relaxing, romantic and non-touristy experience in Maui.

Like many other reviewers I found this wonderful place on TripAdvisor. My wife and I stayed in the Kohola room at Ho'oilo House for eight nights on our honeymoon. At first I was worried about spending our entire time in Maui in one location, but it ended up working out perfectly. I encourage everyone to stay at least five nights here which will get you a 15% discount making this a great deal compared to the resorts!

The house is set up on a hill in a residential area of high end homes. You can picture yourself driving up to your own island getaway. We took the time to drive around and look at the price tag on some of the homes for sale. I am still crunching numbers... The views are breathtaking all around the home. Towering green mountains behind the home; The island of Lanai and the vast Pacific in the front.

The grounds and common areas are beautifully maintained. Huge flowers, a great pool, garden ponds and palm leaves chattering in the wind make for a serene ambiance. Dan and Amy were gracious hosts. It was the perfect balance of privacy and availability that you expect at a B&B. Dan will come running if you need anything. Amy's breakfasts are wonderful and very healthy. Muffins, fruits, juices, fresh bread, hard boiled eggs and of course fresh island grown coffee. What a great way to start the day and saves you some money as well. If you are concerned about not having direct access to the beach, don't be! There are so many beautiful beaches we tried a different one each day. I recommend picking up a copy of the book Maui Revealed for the best beach reviews. If you are adventurous you will find your dream vacation in this book!

Our room, Kohola, was beautifully decorated. There is a cozy bed with luxurious sheets and comforter which looks straight out onto the ocean. I loved the Ivorystone tub and of course the outdoor shower! The shower in this room does lack some privacy, but makes up for it in the views. My only suggestion is to keep an eye out for creepy crawlys at night time. One of the great features of all the rooms is the central stereo system. A volume knob on the wall allows you to listen to romantic Hawaiin music and is very relaxing. The Lanai is wonderful and has two comfy chairs. It would be easy to spend your entire trip hanging around the house, if only there wasn't so much to do and see on Maui. There are mosquitoes after the sun goes down, thankfully there is some bug repellent provided in the rooms. Make sure to bring it with you on your trip to Hana as well.

Overall this is the perfect spot for couples of any age. It is not setup for children, but that adds to the relaxation. If you are looking for an unforgettable place to stay on Maui this is it. Don't waste your time on a cramped and generic hotel room. I can not wait to return and we will never forget our Honeymoon here. Look for our entry in the guest book!

We are still talking about our recent visit to this friendly, stylish, contemporary B&B--truly one of the highlights of our recent week in Maui.

We stumbled upon Ho'oilo House after realizing that shelling out close to $500 a night in Kaanapali might get us an ocean view, but in a generic room that would be right at home in your typical mid-level airport hotel. We expect more for our money, even at Hawaiian prices.

This place delivered.

Driving in for the first time, the hillside, neighborhood-y location a mile or so down the coast from Lahaina Town felt somewhat underwhelming. But once you actually get there, the property itself is a little oasis--impeccably maintained grounds, flowering plants and trees everywhere, and dramatic mountains looming behind with a panoramic ocean view out front.

There are 6 guest suites on either side of a large common area, which is stunning--a large room with floor to ceiling windows, beautiful light, and hand-carved wood everywhere. Just outside is a small pool and patio with lounge chairs overlooking the Pacific and either Lanai or Molokai (I can't remember which island). Co-owners Amy & Dan provide a simple, healthy breakfast there every morning, with cereal, homemade bread and muffins, coffee/juice, fresh fruit and yogurt. It would be easy to spend most of your trip just sitting there, soaking in the scenery with a good book.

We stayed in the Honu suite and would definitely recommend it. A massive, carved wooden 4-poster bed dominates the room and is tastefully done up with quality linens and pillows. The bathroom is large, done in black granite or marble with details like a raised sink, blown glass lights and thick Turkish cotton towels. As mentioned by others, a real highlight is the private outdoor shower, with black pebbles on the floor and a gargoyle serving as the water source. It's a very cool feeling to get clean surrounded by mountains, flowers and ocean.

Our only quibbles were with a few details. The toilet basically sits in a corner of the bathroom and offers no doors, curtains or other form of privacy. Unless you are one of those couples who shares EVERYTHING, someone will be heading outside to the patio every so often. The door to the outdoor shower never would latch correctly, which let in a few mosquitoes. The small room A/C had enough juice to moderate the massive humidity, but couldn't do much in the way of cooling. It is the islands (and hey, Hana Ranch doesn't even have A/C), but just be prepared to do some sweating inside as well as out.

Overall, a great value for Maui at around $350 a night and highly recommended for couples or other adult travelers. Doesn't feel like the right place for kids, family vacations or wild partiers.
