Ulalena is not an ordinary show, it is quite unusual and they sing in Hawaiian Language
They have a band- music is fascinating, the content of the musical is the history of Hawaiian people. Their music and moves are quite different from what europeans or north americans are used too, so be open minded.
A couple of housekeeping things- parking is one block away, behind Hard rock cafe, you take a ticket, they will validate at the entrance to the theatre.Come at least 30 min before the show-parking is limited. The theater is not very big, you can have a good view even from the last row, if willing to save $$ - last 2 rows-they call it standard seating-is quite all right. you can also save if you book directly on their web- site, canadian credit card holders will have to call the theater directly as web site accepts only US cards, but they will still honour web price over the phone. Some people brought very young children to the show- not a good idea, the music gets lowd at time, the kids get scared and start screaming :(
Overall, interesting show

If you like musicals and want to learn about Hawaii’s history, don’t miss this beautiful performance. We bought VIP ticket and were delighted to meet the cast after the representation.

I really enjoyed the performance - it offers a glimpse into Maui's history and mythology, with drama and dance, Hawaiian song and chant. Not sure I would compare it to Cirque de Soleil as some others say, at least not the show I saw five years ago. 'Ulalena was very well done.

Ours was a special matinee performance for Maui students - what a field trip!

I was lucky enough to win a ticket to Ulalena at our hotels orientation morning so we only had to buy 1 ticket. We were seated in the very back row in standard seating but the theater is not large, i actually thought our seats were fantastic. We got a great overall view of the show.
The performance was excellent. The sets and costumes were beautiful and the ribbon and hoop sections were a real highlight.

This show was an interesting look into the history of Hawaii, using music, song and dance. If it were purely a native representation of history, it would be much more truthful, wherein the people of European origin would be depicted as being the murderers and thieves that they really were, destroying the Native's entire world, just like they did everywhere on Planet Earth. But........ since this is really tainted by European influence, it is hugely watered down, and ohh sooo polite..... love the part about Captain Cook....... Ha! Ha! Ha! Maybe we should change his name to Captain Crook??? Why is it sooooo hard for all of us to admit that the people of European descent were by far the worst murderers and thieves and terrorists our Planet has ever seen???
