Every time we visit Maui, we make sure we go on a Trilogy Excursion. This time we took the Sunset cruise at Kaanapali beach.
You get on the catamaran by walking through the water, but, the staff is so helpful in explaining the process and helping you up the stairs of the cat, you should never get wet, unless you haven't rolled your pants up enough.
The Trilogy staff is so friendly and so involved in making your excursion a memorable one. The Captain asked us right away if anyone would mind staying out on the water a half hour more than planned. The sunset time had changed and he obviously wanted us to see the sunset on a sunset cruise!
Pupus are served...all very good and homemade...and drinks are served...juice, softdrinks, or MaiTais and beer. Each guest is allowed 3 alcoholic drinks total.
We saw whales, we ate, we drank, and we watched a spectacular sunset...could not ask for more!!!

Very reasonable price and picked up right on the beach infront of hotel. Captain and crew were great at locating and explaining and lots of information and history. I recommend this for everyone, you will never forget it.

A great time today with Captain Kevin, Michael, Jill, and Amy. Very professional and organized organization. Excellent service is what they provide. Very safe adventure with great a equipment. Saw whales on the way back to the beach. Try the Snuba led by Michael. Onboard lunch was excellent. Well worth the money and time.

I think what really sets Trilogy apart from it's competitors must be their ability to hire great crew! We went on the Crater snorkelling trip and had a wonderful time. The food was all great and they insisted that you just relax and let them bring it to you! The capt. of our boat ( Brett) was hilarious and was great with both of my daughters. Kai the first mate was very informative about the whales and the dolphins that we saw as well as how to make the best ice-cream sundae! We had Nick for our Snuba and he made us all feel very comfortable and safe. I would not hesitate to take another excursion with this company and regret that we did not have time to book the all day trip to Lanai! Next time!

We did a 2 hour whale watching tour out of Maalaea harbor. We booked this in advance, and unfortunately for us they applied the airline trick: changing start times.. 1:30pm to 2:30pm and you should arrive by 2pm when coming by car to be guided to a parking spot by Trilogy.
We arrived at 2pm: nobody from Trilogy to be seen. Check in was at 2:15pm when not coming by car. 2:15pm: nobody there. Around 2:20pm someone finally came to tell us where to go, of course at the whole other end of the harbor.
Check in on the boat was smooth and off we went. March should be peak season for whales, but we maybe saw for 10 minutes worth of whales during these 2 hours. Only 2 times a whale came close(and breached), but for the rest of the trip we didn't see a lot. Further ahead we saw that other tour boats were more lucky with whales breaching every minute or so..
My advice: only do this when you spare time in Maui. We picked the harbor spot because it said to be one of the best spots for whale watching. I now have my doubts, so if I would ever to do it again I would probably pick another starting spot(and company).

We appreciate your taking the time to offer a review of your whale watching trip with Trilogy Excursions, and we hope we can address a few of the comments you mention in your review.

As you state in your title, yes, there is admittedly a high degree of luck involved when it comes to whale watching in Maui. March is, in fact, the peak season for whale watching, and even though Maui boasts the highest concentration of humpback whales found anywhere on the planet, we are ultimately still dealing with nature. Which boat a whale decides to surface next to is out of our control, and we hope that you enjoyed aspects of our tour which are within our control such as the spacious catamaran and the knowledge of our crew.

You also raise another good point in that we have two different slips at Ma'alaea Harbor, slips 99 and 62. Although your booking agent should let you know which slip you will be departing from, we have signs at each of the slips letting passengers know that in the event there isn't a check-in person we also have a boat on the other side of the harbor. The crew member who greeted you at 2:20 p.m. made a special trip to the other side of the harbor to see if any late passengers might have gone to the wrong slip, and although this is by no means a fault of your own, it's something important that our Ma'alaea passengers should be aware of.

In addition to Ma'alaea we also offer whale watching excursions out of Lahaina Harbor as well as off of Ka'anapali Beach. Should you feel you want to try your hand at whale watching again from a different location, we hope that we can have the opportunity to show you that no two whale watches are exactly the same.

Again, mahalo for taking the time to offer your review, and we sincerely hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday.
