“The Castaway is a life saver on the wallet...”
Reviewed January 1, 2013

I've eaten at the Castaway dozens of times over the past 10 years (I live here on Maui, but a 45 minute drive away). It has been under the very capable ownership of Gary for 16 years now and continues to show constant improvement, both to the physical and gastronomic areas. Many others here have mentioned the friendliness of the staff and how they remember you...it's true...and it's also true that a big percentage of them have been with Gary either since he took it over, or shortly thereafter. The longevity of staff is another excellent indicator of how they are treated, and in turn, treat others.

Okay let's get to it:

recently, this past Friday, I was in the area and went by for breakfast, which I had never had there before. I reckoned there'd be the traditional Eggs Benedict on the menu, and there was. I was also hoping that they would have Huevos Rancheros, or some sort of 'Mexican' style offering...and there it was! Well, knowing that the Chef, Ricardo, aka Ricky, is Latino, I went for it as I like spicy and Huevos Rancheros is one of my favs, when properly done/presented...to say I was not disappointed is an understatement. I'd not seen a presentation in the way they serve theirs. Two corn tortillas melded together (for lack of better words) with obviously house-made chorizo , refried beans, cheese, homemade salsa, sour cream on the side...beyond my expectations, truth is it was the bomb! I've searched high and low for a decent H R and have finally found it...10usd

as my friends stay the winter across the highway, we have gone there often over the years for dinner. I must say the menu under Chef Ricardo has been vastly improved. If you're ono for fresh fish, you're in luck here. Perfectly grilled Machong on several occasions, once with a tasty chipotle sauce..usually the fresh fish entrees are priced approx 24usd, and come with rice or potato, FRESH veggies perfectly sauteed, and always an orchid garnish for added color. That price point is up to half of what you'd pay in other nearby restaurants, and trust me they are no where as close to sitting on the beach like the Castaway is. I've also had the seafood curry, another tasty, spiced just right offering. My friends, lighter eaters as they are elderly, often go for the homemade soup du jour and a salad, or the Asian sampler plate or share a pasta dish...the staff is very co-operative on that as they are quite regular customers for many years.

Pasta night is every Tuesday and all I can say is go early. It's a tradition for many many years now and has a devoted following. Oh the offer is two for one...on the entrees, and no, the regular menu is not available on Tuesdays.

Wine List...many others here have commented on the Wine Spectator Magazine Award Winning wine list that is available here. Gary is the keeper of this gem, and stocks hundreds of selections that run the gamut price wise. One of the better deals is the Calif Pinot Blend, Meiomi, offered by the glass at, gasp, $8.50, or by the bottle...

They serve Breakfast 7:30>12 noon, Lunch is from 11 to 2:30 then Dinner from 5 to 9, with pupu/lighter fare from 2:30 to 5, 7 days a week. Bar is double sided...10 or so stools inside and about a half dozen outside in the open air...there are also some tables outside for drinks and pupu...

There is a recent beach walk addition in Ka'anapali, which goes right past the Castaway, and has provided it with a big increase in visibility/business, so do call ahead for larger, more than 6, parties (661.9091)...

Parking can be abit mysterious as the AOAO of Maui Ka'anapali Villas only gives them two parking spaces, which are clearly marked. However, if they are occupied, just park anywhere on the grounds and go into the lobby of the main building and they will give you a comp. parking pass for your dash...most guests seem to just be walking from all of the various hotels/time shares in the area...

So go, enjoy, say Aloha to Wayne the bartender, Kim one of the long time waitress's, Michele the hostess with mostess, and the other cast of characters that work with Gary in providing you, the guest, a lovely time while there...

“Lunch at the Beach”
Reviewed December 29, 2012

This restaurant was just outside our villa and because of previous reviews, we knew we would dine there. Our selections were so tastefully prepared. Sitting outside in the breeze was comforting. Our choices included fish and chips, a grilled chicken sandwich with delicious pineapple slaw, and barbeque pork sandwich with slaw. Courteous servers made the meal even more pleasing. We were then compelled to change and go to the beach.

“Excellent breakfast hidden from visitors”
Reviewed November 24, 2012

This is a quaint little cafe at Kaanapali Shores that unless you are staying there or someone tells you about it, you might miss it all together. The prices are very fair in relation to the servings and the service is drop dead good. Be sure and try the macadamia pancakes as well as the thick sliced smoked bacon. Also the setting is right on the beach so be prepared to see a school of dolphins anytime.
