Description: Enjoy the exciting, ancient art of teppanyaki cooking at the restaurant voted number 1 Japanese restaurant on Maui. Teppanyaki is derived from "teppan" which means iron plate and "yaki" which means grilled. At Kobe, it is delivered with the style and grace of a Japanese country inn. Blend in the gentle aloha of Hawaii, you will experience an evening where terrific food and entertainment are the perfect combination. After a delicious bowl of shabu-shabu soup, your teppan chef will begin to cook up an entrée of dishes, right in front of you, cooking it to tasty perfection, while watching him do the "flaming onion volcano", one of their many culinary tricks. Another favorite at Kobe is to sit in the sunken sushi bar and order one of uncle Oku's fabulous daily specials and enjoy watching the chefs masterfully create their delicious sushi. Oku prides himself on the high quality of fresh fish he chooses from local vendors. Approximately 95% of Oku's fish comes from Hawaii, and the balance of his menu consists of exotic items imported from Japan. The restaurant décor features many historical ornaments and artifacts to provide an authentic feel of Japan, the mother country. Kobe Japanese Steak House & Oku's Sushi Bar delights visiting guests and Island locals alike. Come and join us for a great meal today!

Kobe was packed when we visited, and many hibachi tables in motion with every seat occupied. We sat at the sushi bar (also every chair occupied), and ordered sake, three rolls and 2-piece unagi. All were delicious and served surprisingly quickly judging from the crowd. I agree with other reviewers - the restaurant definitely needs a facelift/renovation. But we enjoyed our food and experience and would return. Also park wherever you can, not just in the lot across from them. You pay to park there, and just about anywhere else in Lahaina, and everything is within a reasonable distance.

Have been here a week and have had dinner at different places every day, so far this is the best place. Good food, good service and good entertainment. It is not as good as an avarage japanese restaurant in London but for being in US it is excellent, it is also cheaper than in London.

Teppanyaki style of dining is an entertaining show at your table by a skilled chef who flips items around and creates special effects with a towering flame, etc. It's fun to watch especially ifi he adds animated conversation to his showmanship.

There were seven people at our section. There are areas available for larger groups of 10-14 persons who sit in a square with the chef in the center.

FOOD; The food is good because it is freshly prepared at your table. You select your preference of chicken, beef/steak, scallops, shrimp, etc --- which is then added to the basic assortment of grilled vegetables along with plain or fried rice.

ENTERTAINMENT factor depends on your particular chef ---- how skilled he is at "flipping" food and utensils, talking and creating awesome flambe effects. Our chef was very animated and comical. He built a "volcano" from onion rings, poured some alcohol in it, then lit it to create a high flame.

PARKING; at nearby Baldwin House. You pay $10.00 at a machine on the lot which is refunded when you validate your ticket at the restaurant. Better to get your refund when you arrive ---- less chance of forgetting about it at the end of the meal.

GENERAL COMMENTS; The food was very good. Drink service was average. However, we felt somewhat "rushed" at the conclusion of the dinner. We were still trying to finish our drinks and the server was clearing items all around us, making it obvious that it was "time to go". There was another group waiting to be seated (I think they seat groups every hour or so).

CHECK YOUR BILL; This can happen at any restaurant and it's always a good idea to check your bill before paying. We were charged for TWO drinks which we did not order and it took awhile to get a corrected bill and make payment.

CONCLUSION; An enjoyable dining experience in spite of the few comments mentioned above. We actually dined there twice within ten days.

Tuesday night @ 6PM we were alone at the sushi bar and the restaurant was pretty quiet; but by 7 PM the place was hopping. The edamame bowl was about 1/2 the portion we get at most sushi bars; but at least it wasn't over-salted. We ordered 2 sashimi combos with rice sides. As we were the 1st ones at the sushi bar our order came out in about 5 minutes. Very fresh sashimi and some of the best sticky rice we have had in awhile. The wasabi was moist & "HOT" (as in spicy); perfect for those of us who love it that way. The downside was the fact that the sushi chefs put WAY too much bleach in their bar towels and my wife was nauseated by the time we left. Hint to management: Save the bleach for the wipe down towels at the end of the shift! The menu board was tacky and the entire place was well used and due for a pick me up remodel. Sevice was OK; but our waitress didn't speak English & when I asked her to move the bleach towel on the counter behind us and to please ask the chefs to rinse their towels, she had no idea what I was talking about. We would have ordered more; but the bleach smell was overwhelming and we needed to go down the street and have a cocoanut/pineapple ice cream cone to take away the bad taste.
The restaurant has a huge sign directing patrons to a parking lot across the side street, 1/2 block towards Front Street. The minimum parking in that lot is $10 for 2 hours. Go north on Dickenson 1 block and there are 3 or 4 lots at $5 for 2 hours, another 1/2 block & it is $5 for all day.
