My husband and I were originally turned on to this restaurant by a food-critic friend back when it was still called by the original owner's name. The current chef/owner bought the Lahaina Grill several years back, and ever since then the visitors to the Lahaina Grill have been Blessed by the restaurant gods!!
A few of the original menu choices from the first chef are still offered on the menu, but the talented chefs at Lahaina Grill have surpassed the quality and the offerings of that earlier restaurant by leaps and bounds. The Wagyu Ravioli appetizer is an absolute must have, but if the beef filling is not your thing, then any of the gorgeous salads they offer would be the perfect starter. The salads are almost too lovely to eat.
My husband's all-time favorite on the menu are the Kona coffee lamb chops, but because Lahaina Grill's chefs are masters with Maui's fresh catch, we have been obsessed with having their nightly fish entree specials. They have recently offered Opakapaka & a Hawaiian seabass that I think is called Ulu. Both were served on beds of risotto and topped with a simple prawn. Fabulous looking, and not enough words to describe the incredible flavors.
In our two week trip, we ate at Lahaina Grill three times and recommended it to other visitors who tried it and immediately said they will be repeat customers. Of course we go for the food, but the visit is complete because of the excellent bar and table service. Reservations are often needed for the dining room so we have taken to staying and eating at the bar. They offer full menu service at the bar and conversation with Mary, one of Lahaina Grill's fabulous bartenders, is always enjoyable. We would not hesitate to be seated at any of the tables because the waiters are attentive, friendly and never leave a customer waiting. Justin happens to be our favorite, but we have had terrific service from the other waiters as well. All of the wait staff and the bartenders have been at Lahaina Grill for years and years, and I think it says something about the restaurant itself if the staff is happy with their work environment. It just makes them glad to be with the customers.
If you are a fan of excellent food and drinks, combined with terrific atmosphere and staff, then the Lahaina Grill has to be your first stop in Maui. Yes, if you want to drive to the other side of the island, there is Mama's Fish House, but save the gas and hours of drive time and just stay in town. You cannot find a better meal with better service than at the Lahaina Grill.
