First of all, the Steam Engine is not in service. It's being repaired apparently. Part of trip takes you through a Homeless Shanty town. It's like a tour through a back alley in a rough part of town. Yes you get a view of the ocean, but it's the same view you get if you were driving along the highway, for free. The staff if very friendly, but that's the only redeeming feature of this attraction. A 3-6 year old child might enjoy this attraction, but an adult is going to sit there wondering why on earth he paid $23 / person for a tour through a back alley.
For you Canadian readers, the Train Ride at West Edmonton Mall is 100 times better!

“Not a steam engine anymore.”
Reviewed November 1, 2013

If you are looking for a nostalgic steam engine ride, this is not the case as of a week or 2 ago. They now use a diesel locomotive with a rude train air horn, not the classic steam "chugging" with a steam whistle. What used to be a charming journey to the past, is now a just a noisy ride.
Here is hoping that the steam engine is just being repaired and will be back soon. i would ask when making a reservation if the steam engine is back. Otherwise you could be very disappointed.

“Awesome for the little guys”
Reviewed October 17, 2013

You know what? The conductors on this train are great guys, who really tell you a lot about the local history. The views are great in some places, in others, well, it's a train ride. If you are on a trip to Hawaii, and are looking for activities for the younger crowd, this fits the bill. It can really round out your trip so that everyone from the little kids obsessed with trains to the teens who only want to text and shop - this is a great 1 hour compromise for everyone.

“Sugar cane train”
Reviewed October 1, 2013

This is a narrow gauge steam train that used to have cars to pick up the picked sugar cane. It is now a passenger train, but you can see the other cars parked at the station. While it is hard to hear the short historical explanations that are given as you travel along it is still worth it to ride. To hear better, sit in the car behind the engine and water car. Sit along the rode side for the best views of scenery and the filling of the water into the car from the tank. If you are old enough to remember the TV show Petticoat Junction you will love it. Travel across a very high, wooden bridge at a very slow pace. Beautiful views of the Maui coast and mountains. A short trip between Kaanapali and Lahaina. Watch the engine on the round table in Lahaina. I took the time when the engineer stops for a 30 min. lunch in Lahaina and walked a block to a fast food area an ate my lunch then got back on for the return trip. You can also board any train time for the return trip. The jostling you get on the ride is all part of the good old fashion fun.

“Nice real steam train ride”
Reviewed September 7, 2013

Well it surely is not as bad as people describe. For those who give one star, try the Atlantis Submarine in Maui. Talking about getting bored and ripped off for 2 hours!

This is a truly working steam train (using oil instead of coal). Clean and neat. Very hard to find in East Coast as many alleged steam train rides in that region are actually pulled/pushed by diesel engines.

From Lahaina, you'd see the real turn-table in action. The train is open air w/ roof, with live music. The scenery is decent except the part near Lahaina (back of parking lots et al).

On the return trip, you'd be able to see the train getting water from a water tower (imagine Thomas & Friends in real life!), plus a big steam woosh on a wooden bridge. It's pretty cool. Again, live music on the return trip.

My tip is to get some shave ice and enjoy the train in the afternoon (when it is more windy and thus making the ride a little cooler).
