This was our first visit to this property, but we have stayed at other Westin Villas. It seems as if this property has grown a bit too fast for them to keep up. Beach and pool are the best features. Rest of the experience will really depend on your room location.
We stayed in the North Villas, which has a separate lobby and check in. They have complimentary valet the first day, which was nice for getting your stuff out of your rental car and into your room, but you really don't need valet after that. They also have a shuttle that runs to Whaler's Village and down to Lahaina if you don't mind waiting around and doing some walking. We used the shuttles and thought they were a nice feature since parking in town can be a challenge. There is a little grocery shop off the lobby and they offer a 15% discount for guests, although the selection was very limited, but easier than the Safeway in town.
The rooms are like all the Westin's, which are nice and comfortable. Great beds. We had a two-bedroom lock out for us and our kids to share. Plenty of space. Wife and I in master suite and 3 kids in the other bedroom and pull out sleeper couch. Plus it is Maui so you are feeling pretty good about the world by just getting here.
Grounds were nice, but getting to and from parking garage, lobby, or pool was a nightmare if you had a bad room like we did Building 7 on the back side overlooking a construction site). Signage was in short supply and the walk is a maze that made us feel like rats in a science experiment. Encountering other guests in the maze was always entertaining as everyone had the same incredulous expression on their faces. The experienced guests would reassure the newbies with phrases like "only 8 more turns and you'll be there".
The beach and pool area are very nice if you don't mind a lot of unsupervised children running about and screaming. Seemed to be a lot of grandparents bringing their kids and grandkids to Maui for vacation. If you get a little farther up or down the beach from the hotel, it gets a little less populated, but also away from the ability to get hotel umbrellas or chairs. The west facing beach is lovely for swimming or floating in the waves and provides lots of sun right in your face, but dipping in the water can keep you cool. The wind seems to kick up every afternoon to the point where blowing sand can sting, so bring something to protect yourself. We did feel safe in the water and on the beach. Some guests snorkel by the hotel and you can see some fish and an occasional turtle, but there are many better snorkel spots on the island.
There are shared grills for cooking. They are all gas and not in a great state of repair. After waiting several minutes for one to open, we found that only one half of the grill would light. On the side that did light, it would only work when turned to high. Needless to say, not the best cooking conditions, but passable. The upside is you will get to meet lots of other dad's standing around with trays of chicken, burgers or fish waiting for a grill to open up.
The number one gripe is the Wifi and TV. The Television has been totally unwatchable the entire week. Playback is interrupted, pixellated and some channels don't come in at all. Since we were here to enjoy the island and go on excursions, that wouldn't be the worst thing, but you do occasionally want to turn the thing on and see what is happening or watch a movie or something at night.
The same crappy experience happens with the Wifi. You have a limit of 4 devices per room, which was enough for us, but even when only one device was on, you could only do very limited things like email. Forget about streaming anything. You get disconnected frequently and when you are connected, you will spend a lot of time waiting. This seems ridiculous and easily solved. The other Westin properties we have been to had much better service.
