This was our first visit to this property, but we have stayed at other Westin Villas. It seems as if this property has grown a bit too fast for them to keep up. Beach and pool are the best features. Rest of the experience will really depend on your room location.

We stayed in the North Villas, which has a separate lobby and check in. They have complimentary valet the first day, which was nice for getting your stuff out of your rental car and into your room, but you really don't need valet after that. They also have a shuttle that runs to Whaler's Village and down to Lahaina if you don't mind waiting around and doing some walking. We used the shuttles and thought they were a nice feature since parking in town can be a challenge. There is a little grocery shop off the lobby and they offer a 15% discount for guests, although the selection was very limited, but easier than the Safeway in town.

The rooms are like all the Westin's, which are nice and comfortable. Great beds. We had a two-bedroom lock out for us and our kids to share. Plenty of space. Wife and I in master suite and 3 kids in the other bedroom and pull out sleeper couch. Plus it is Maui so you are feeling pretty good about the world by just getting here.

Grounds were nice, but getting to and from parking garage, lobby, or pool was a nightmare if you had a bad room like we did Building 7 on the back side overlooking a construction site). Signage was in short supply and the walk is a maze that made us feel like rats in a science experiment. Encountering other guests in the maze was always entertaining as everyone had the same incredulous expression on their faces. The experienced guests would reassure the newbies with phrases like "only 8 more turns and you'll be there".

The beach and pool area are very nice if you don't mind a lot of unsupervised children running about and screaming. Seemed to be a lot of grandparents bringing their kids and grandkids to Maui for vacation. If you get a little farther up or down the beach from the hotel, it gets a little less populated, but also away from the ability to get hotel umbrellas or chairs. The west facing beach is lovely for swimming or floating in the waves and provides lots of sun right in your face, but dipping in the water can keep you cool. The wind seems to kick up every afternoon to the point where blowing sand can sting, so bring something to protect yourself. We did feel safe in the water and on the beach. Some guests snorkel by the hotel and you can see some fish and an occasional turtle, but there are many better snorkel spots on the island.

There are shared grills for cooking. They are all gas and not in a great state of repair. After waiting several minutes for one to open, we found that only one half of the grill would light. On the side that did light, it would only work when turned to high. Needless to say, not the best cooking conditions, but passable. The upside is you will get to meet lots of other dad's standing around with trays of chicken, burgers or fish waiting for a grill to open up.

The number one gripe is the Wifi and TV. The Television has been totally unwatchable the entire week. Playback is interrupted, pixellated and some channels don't come in at all. Since we were here to enjoy the island and go on excursions, that wouldn't be the worst thing, but you do occasionally want to turn the thing on and see what is happening or watch a movie or something at night.

The same crappy experience happens with the Wifi. You have a limit of 4 devices per room, which was enough for us, but even when only one device was on, you could only do very limited things like email. Forget about streaming anything. You get disconnected frequently and when you are connected, you will spend a lot of time waiting. This seems ridiculous and easily solved. The other Westin properties we have been to had much better service.

Room Tip: Building 8 by pool would have been much better (and what we requested) but we got backside on Buildi...

Stayed in the north villas. our unit was spacious overlooked half of the pool/beach. I beleive there are 3 pools in this resort but we stayed mostly on the south side and our side w/c had the pirate ship slide, this area is best for the young ones. there is a lovely walkway to the right and left of the resort that goes for miles along the beach. the beach was very nice but the surf was strong so keep a close eye on the kids. my only big complaint was the unit did not look like it was well cleaned when we entered. The hotel was fully booked so housekeeping may have rushed through. Also shower backed up 1st night, apparently this is common as sand gets trapped in the pipes. It was addressed quickly. oh and housekeeping only tidy up mid week and its not a full service cleaning. Overall very much enjoyed our 6nights.

We recently stayed in a 2BR villa at The Westin Ka'anapali Ocean Resort Villas (6/2-6/9) (booked through Interval International exchange). We were in Building 4 which wasn't ideal view wise, but we spent the majority of our time out and about any way so it wasn't a big deal. The room was everything we expected and needed. The kitchen amenities were great, the bathrooms were huge and the beds/pillows were VERY comfortable.

Some highlights of the resort included:

- The snorkel gear rentals were VERY reasonable. We paid $47 for a one-day rental of 2 full sets (mask/mouthpiece/flippers) and a pair of extra flippers.
- The snorkeling off the beach was FANTASTIC. There were lots of fish and we saw a few turtles! The water was calm enough for swimmers of all levels to enjoy snorkeling.
- The food was fantastic. Create your own hot dog at Pailolo Grill... Hawaiian Cheesesteak, crab fest, fish tacos at the Ocean Pool Bar... and the calamari at Pulehu is a must!
- No complaints on the service. The shuttles were very prompt and super convenient.
- We did the Wailele Polynesian Luau at the nearby Westin Hotel (free shuttle there and back) and it was awesome. Great food, strong drinks, and a very entertaining show.
- Free parking! We never had trouble finding parking near our building.

The only negatives I can think of are:

- Was a little surprised the resort only has one actual restaurant and two pool bars/grills.
- Definitely a family location, however I didn't find the pools to be too overly crowded with screaming children.

I would definitely recommend this resort.

I researched about a dozen properties in Maui before deciding to stay at the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas, and now that our trip has ended, I'm happy I did. Our family of 4 stayed here for 9 nights in June 2013. We opted for a 2-BR oceanview villa (South Villas 2221/2223) which is comprised of a 1BR unit + attached studio unit. Our kids stayed in the studio unit, which gave them their own bathroom, sitting area, refrigerator, etc. Upon arrival at 9:30pm (after 15 hours of travel) we received a very friendly greeting from the valets, and check-in was friendly and efficient. When the sun rose the next morning, were were very pleased with our view and proximity to the pool & beach. The beach is very nice, with terrific snorkeling. The drop-off is pretty steep and quickly turns to coral, so little ones need to be watched closely. There is a "flatter" beach about 150 yards south. The views of Lanai and Molokai are amazing! The resort is well manicured, and the restaurants were all good.

Similar to other reviews, we noticed that it is a bit competitive to get the desirable pool lounges (next to tiki umbrellas). You have the option to pay a premium for cabanas, but who wants to do that?

The only thing we didn't care for was the free shuttle to Lahaina. Because our property was the first stop to Lahaina and the last stop from Lahaina, it took 30 minutes of travel each way (for what is about a 5 minute car ride). When you add the wait time for the shuttle bus to arrive, you've sacrificed 90 minutes of your evening. Unless you plan on drinking a lot, I recommend taking your rental car.

Overall, this is a wonderful place to stay on Maui, and I highly recommend it for both couples and families.

This is a beautiful resort and while it's a bit pricey, you're not trapped in the resort and forced to eat at its restaurants. There are plenty of really old beachside BBQs for cooking your own meals and two well stocked shops to buy food supplies. The hotel also provides two free shuttles to get you to other resorts in Ka'anapali and into Lahaina so there are plenty of options for activities and dining. They also I've guests the option of 'going green' and opting out of a room clean for a day in exchange for one free breakfast. Overall the resort is very well kept, clean and suits both families and couples.

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side seemed to be more for families, but rooms not facing the pools were generall...

Spent 6 nights in Maui with sister and Mother - a surprise 60th birthday present for her. I'd been to Hawaii, but neither of them had.

They both loved the island and we all enjoyed the Westin. We got lucky booking through Priceline for a studio. At check in, we were offered an upgrade for $150/night into a 1 bedroom suite, but that was almost the cost of the room we had, so declined. I've read other reviews saying guests were hounded for a tour/presentation - we experienced nothing like that, maybe they thought we were poor because we booked through priceline, :)

Anyways, the pools are amazing. Very nice. The public beach was nice, but nothing great. Full disclosure: we loved 7 Mile Beach in Cayman, so anything compared to that seems to fall short. The beach here was small and a little rocky, but definitely very decent.

We only ate breakfast and lunch at the resort, which was good. We had a rental car so ventured out for dinner every night. Food at hotel was good.

In terms of the room, it was nice size for a studio, 1 big bed, pull out sofa, tv, kitchennette, and the bathroom was huge - really big. Everything modern and up to date.

We came all the way from Boston and would definitely go back. The Westin is a great brand and this resort did not disappoint.

Room Tip: Try to get a free upgrade, otherwise, you'll be looking at the parking lot
