“Wonderful Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 26, 2012

We stayed at this Westin for one week in December as a timeshare "exchange", and I was very anxious about our accomodations, since you can't find out anything about your exact room until you arrive. We were greeted by lovely smiling Salome, who assured us "You have a lovely room".....and she was right! We had a beautiful view of the pool and ocean from our balcony in the South Bldg. Our rooms were spotless, the king size bed was super comfortable, loved the fully equipped kitchen, and the bathroom was huge, with a separate jacuzzi tub and shower. The room also included a washer and dryer.

The landscaping at the resort is beautiful and we loved the fact that you could "beach walk" all the way to Whalers Village and beyond. The complimentary shuttle is a nice feature and we used it to go in to Lahaina once.

We found the concierge staff to be very helpful, especially when we planned a day trip to Hana for a hike in the Haleakala National Park. We were advised to get on the road early and plan to return by 3PM or so, as it wouldn't be a pleasant trip in the dark. Good advice!

Really have nothing negative to say about the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas and we'd return in a heartbeat!

Just came from HI visit and spent 6 nights in the resort. Every penny worth staying...
The staff is good and helps in every way they can. I got room that was just by the pool and beach. Must drink Lava Float.
All the amenities are up to date.
If the WiFi can be improved, that will help visitors like me, who are on computer at times.

Lovely beach, pools a little bit too crowded. Location nice but car needed. overall a good place to stay in maui especially if you love to walk on the beach. The bar close to the pool serve very nice cocktail. We will be back at some point. for sure! Ciao!

We have stayed at many places in Hawaii and this place ROCKS. It is at an awesome location. Service is great. Rooms at very luxurious. The beach has some of the best snorkeling and the beach is nice with shade in the morning. Rooms have kitchen and washer/dryer, clean and well kept up. Maids are friendly, bell boys are always cheerful and go out of their way to help. Buses are free, great and bus drivers funny and nice. Pool is nice with volleyball and basketball. Pool side services, lots of shade. Ocean view hot tubs. Will not stay anywhere else in Kaanapali. Something for everyone

This is part of a continuing series of my impressions and experiences staying at various hotels and resorts while traveling to attend concerts worldwide. This review is for The Westin Ka'anapali Ocean Resort Villas in Lahaina on the island of Maui in Hawaii.

Property: The Westin Ka'anapali Ocean Resort Villas
Location: Lahaina, Maui
Address: 6 Kai Ala Dr, Lahaina, Maui, HI 96761
Phone: (808) 667-3200
Website: www.westinkaanapali.com
Room Type/Class: Standard (Building 4, South Tower, Room 4201)
Date: December 15-20, 2012
Booking Source: Westin Vacations Starwood Preferred Guest Invitation
Overall Rating: 4/5 [Note: Score is totally subjective based on price, location, and comparison to "like" properties within same area and price range]

I choose my five-night stay with The Westin Ka'anapali Ocean Resort Villas as a result of a special offer from Starwood Preferred Guests for a reduced rate. With this program, you get an additional resort credit if you participate in an hour and a half, one on one time share presentation.

The hotel offers on-site self parking in a parking in open lots as well as underground garages.

There are actually two buildings - North and South. North is newer, and South (particularly Building 4, as I understand it) is where non-"owners" stay, unless you pay more for an upgraded room, which generally pertains to view). I had stayed at this property once years ago, and had a room on the ground floor of Building 4 that was looking directly into the employee parking lot, so I was sure to try to improve on that when checking in with this stay, and ended up with a room in the same building, but on the second floor and facing the water fountain found when driving into the resort.

I also found that I received a much larger room this time - it was really more like an apartment than a hotel room, with a full kitchen, dining room table, separate family room, and in the other half of the space, a large bedroom and huge bathroom with standing stall shower and soaking tub with jets.

Near the front door is a closet which opens to reveal a stacked clothes washer and dryer, which is a big plus at an travel destination, but especially a tropical one.

The kitchen features a full-sized refrigerator, oven, stove top, microwave, dishwasher, sink, and dishes and utensils and what not. For even more cooking options, there are full BBQs outside for guest use as well.

The family room includes a flat screen television (as does the bedroom) as well as a Bose stereo and Blu-Ray player. There is also a Redbox-style video rental unit on property.

This particular room included a huge outdoor patio with a table and chairs as well as two lounge-style chairs.

All in all, the room itself has a lot to offer, and is designed for extended stays and comfort, with the traditional Westin amenities (i.e. their "Heavenly" bed and shower, etc.).

Similarly, there are a lot of on site amenities, such as a variety of casual and fine dining, multiple pools and spas, lots of children's amenities, and more. There are also small stores/markets with food and other things you might seek out while vacationing. Really, it is in large part designed so that you do not need to leave the property for anything.

This resort is also walking distance to sister property the Sheraton Maui with its famous "Black Rock" and beach, though the Westin has quite a nice beach and snorkeling itself.

The resort also offers a shuttle service to its sister properties (the aforementioned Sheraton Maui and the Westin Maui in Ka'anapali proper) as well as a few stops in Lahaina.

I have stayed at many resorts on Maui in the past fifteen years or so, and while I would not rate this property at the top, I would stay here again if I was offered a great deal, but it does have more of a time share and "owner" feel and vibe compared with traditional Hawaiian resorts, and it is very "kid friendly", which is great if you have kids, but may not be the best match for those traveling as couples on a romantic vacation or solo vacationers.

Room Tip: Beware of ground level, parking lot facing rooms in Building 4.

This is NOT party time in Kaanapali. Having said that, while the Westin Villas is definitely more of a family friendly experience, couples can find alone time on the great beach that is adjacent to the property, sit at the poolside bars, and take the free shuttle to the Westin Hotel, in the more chaotic side of Kaanapali, for dinner, drinks and partying, then come back to the Westin Ocean Resort Villas for less crowds. Needless to say, if you want more of a "Waikiki" party time experience, this is not your area. The southern stretch of Kaanapali, where the Westin Hotel is located, is the Wakiki of Maui. However, the Westin Villas is in the northern stretch of Kaanapali, which has a better beach compared to the southern stretch, and is less crowded. Beach or crowds. Your choice! The BEACH! At least a couple of miles long, great for walking off all the food you eat during vacation. The room we had, which was a studio villa, had a two-burner stove, mini-dishwasher (so cool), mini-refrig, microwave, sink. The room was very clean, the "kitchen" area well appointed, with plates, pots, etc. Commercial style coffee maker was also cool, I want one for my home! While there was a large window, balcony, we wish we had a lanai, which only comes with the one-bedroom villa.

Room Tip: If you want quiet rooms, do not get "resort" view, which will put your room over the pool...

We just got back from 7 days at the KOR Villas and it was great place.

First the good:
- Amazing kids club, our 6 year old did not want to be picked up
- Snorkeling - I bumped into a sea turtle 20 ft from shore and saw tons of fish right there
- It's beautiful, I like Modern design and it was a nice place to be
- Pools were nice, but shallow
- Beach was great
- People were all very nice, especially the concierges which were everywhere (trying to sell you stuff, or not)
- parking was pretty easy
- Great location, near everything but not crowded
- Even though the place was 97% full, it didn't feel crowded

The Bad
- AVOID BUILDING 4 LIKE THE PLAGUE. We got put in a room on the 1st floor that overlooked the ramp to the underground parking garage. I've been at a Motel 6 with better views. I was shocked. Worst view of any room ever. After 2 front desk helpers lied to me about my rates and the nature of their island view rooms, the manager put us in a VERY nice room on the 6th floor of building 6 and we could start our vacation in paradise. Also, a lot of the rooms have these small lobbies for connecting two rooms which are super annoying if you don't need them - you need to get through two very heavy doors to get to your room.
- The food is not great. We didn't try the one fancy place, but the other two are expensive and not good. I don't mind expensive and decent, I hoped for better. This seemed to be normal for the area, though, so choose your restaurants on Maui wisely or just go to taco bell.
- Why are towels treated like cigarettes in prison? I had to scam my way to two towels when one got taken by housekeeping, and the other was stolen from my chair while I was swimming. I wasn't stealing them, why did I feel like a criminal?

But, I would go back, I really liked the place. I'll just choose my room wisely.

Room Tip: Avoid Building 4.
