“Great Stay at the Royal Kahana”
Reviewed December 29, 2012

My husband and I checked in and stayed from Dec 15-25. All the reviews posted is exactly what it is. We were on the 8th Floor facing towards Kapalua, our view consisted of the building next door and if we wanted to see the ocean we had to sit in the corner of the Lania which I got use to doing and looking at the water views. On our last day, I watched a Humpback Whale breach twice (without Binoculars) while enjoying my Hawaiian Coffee.

The AC did shut off at odd times but we kept it off most of the time as it was very windy during our stay that we kept the patio doors open to get the breeze and listen to the Ocean waves. The Beach was OK but there wasn't much of one when the ocean was rough. We drove to the Beaches in Kehei which were much better and protected from the winds.

Hot water..there was some issues, we didn't call to complain about it, we just let the water run a little bit or turned it off and turned it back on. After being sunburnt, the cool water felt good.

There is an activities desk in the main lobby. The girls there were very knowledgable and helped us book a few tours.

The Minus I would say is the internet. They have internet access in the main lobby but it cost. You can also subscribe to the Internet for your room but I just found cafes that had free wireless.

Also, there is free use of the BBQs located by the Cabana. We used these a few times as it was better than cooking in our Studio rooms.

We did look at the resorts in Kna'apali as well as Kehei, we were definitely happy to have stayed at the Royal Kahana, it was less crowded. If we were to return to Maui, I would definitely book here again.

Room Tip: Use the activities desk downstairs - and free use of the BBQs beside the Cabana. Book a room that h...

My fiance and I stayed at the Royal Kahana from Dec. 13th-Dec. 26th, our experience was fantastic. We booked through Costco and got a combo package with a car, which is definitely a good idea. Upon checking in, we were upgraded to a room on the 12th floor (top) that was ocean view. This upgrade was provided to us free of charge. I was a little nervous about how our room would be, based on some mixed reviews I'd seen on here, but we were pleasantly surprised. We weren't interested in a 5-star resort experience, but we also wanted a place that was comfortable where we could relax. The room was perfect, much more room than I had expected. We booked a studio: there was a king sized bed, dresser, small couch, coffee table, small dining table, and a condensed kitchen. There isn't much space in the kitchen, but it was equipped with cookware and everything we needed--plus there was a full sized refrigerator, perfect to keep cold drinks and fresh fruit! The TV was new and nice, plus there was a DVD player. The convenience store across the street has a Redbox, very nice since it got dark around 6PM (we're from Alaska and used to much more sunlight with warmer temperatures). The maid service only comes about once a week, they tell you which days are scheduled when you check-in. Some people don't like this, we had no issues--we made the bed when we got up and washed dishes after use. Our maid even washed the couple dishes we'd left in the sink on the days she did come. I loved having the washer and dryer right in the room--so convenient! Our room didn't have a tub, but the shower looked new and we had no issues with hot water. It was very windy while we were there, so there wasn't even much of a need for air conditioning. We kept the balcony door open and the bathroom windows open to create a wonderful breeze through the room. The only thing that I could even remotely critique is that the ceiling fan was located in an awkward spot and is very low. If you were standing in front of the dresser and put your hands up they hit the fan--my fiance and I both were subjected to it before we learned a lesson. It became a laughing point for us more than anything.

We loved the convenience of the Royal Kahana's location, it's about 2 miles to several places to eat and a full grocery store--nice walking distance. Compared to some of the other areas, our location seemed a bit more low-key something that we really enjoyed.

My fiance and I have been to Oahu, The Big Island, and Maui, this trip was certainly our most enjoyable. This was partially due to weather and beaches, but also because of the Royal Kahana. We are already planning to come back and stay next year!

Room Tip: Higher floors have better views! We loved room 1203.

I thought this was a hotel but it turned out to be condos and that is great. The unit (1219) was a studio and quite spacious. The unit is 'dated' but very livable.

The upside:clean, wonderful balcony overlooking the ocean, washer & dryer (apartment size), full kitchen with utensils (just bring food), TV, VCR/DVD, king bed, sleeper sofa for one adult, dinette, heated pool (went in December so the warm water was nice), hotel on the beach, snack bar, exercise room, friendly staff, free parking. There is a strip mall about 2 minutes walk away with a dive shop, several restaurants, coffee shop, McDonald's, gas station.

The downside: no tub (only shower), no daily cleaning (we were there for a week without sheets or towels being changed - I think you can ask the front desk to have housekeeping do this though), had to pay for internet (we didn't), internet in lobby has a minimum charge of $5 and usage is 20 cents a minute and 75 cents per page printed.

Overall I would stay here again in a heartbeat. I checked Expedia and the 'cheapest' room was $165+tax, I contacted the Outrigger directly and got a senior rate of $99+tax per night.

Room Tip: Check the Outrigger Royal Kahana site for rates. There are other Outrigger properties on Maui but I...

Having checked in on the 15th of December into 1013 I found the unit much the same as they were before on a previous visit. I want to start out by saying this is a good option for budget minded folks and families to have a unit with a kitchen and ability to cook.

We got a 1 bedroom unit oceanfront with beautiful views of Lanai and the condo next door and a bit of the burnt up office complex of the condo next door.

No real frills housekeeping once a week on a select day.

Now for the issues which can be a issue for any traveler.

AC in the bedroom only has two vents 1 pointing into the bedroom and the other into the living room. But the AC keeps shutting off at odd times and doesn't really cool efficiently.

Jealousy windows in the bathroom, crank was broken so windows won't seal and the wind, and let me tell you the winds in Kahana in December and January are fierce. The winds just blow right into the shower making it bitterly cold.

Shower- Can never get it to get hot just very warm at best and about 2 minutes later it was cold. You would have to shut it off for a couple minutes and then turn it back on. But you have plenty of hot water at bathroom sink.

Called down and asked about it and clerk said he didn't know why and that maintenance wasn't around at the time and he would have maintenance call before coming up. No such call ever came.

Overall the unit is good and a good value for the price paid. I do want to say that each is individually owned and operated. I found a note in the kitchen drawer about Outrigger specifically not adhering to the maintenance code or what the owners perceive as maintaining their units.

If you are expecting a 5 star resort with all the amenities then this place is not for you... This place is best for families or couples looking to save a few bucks. But please please please set your expectations before you get here. It is what it is, a condo and your unit may vary widely from one person to the next. They have washer and dryers in the unit along with dishwashers and a full range and oven along with microwave. The views are beautiful when the rains and wind aren't howling through the complex. It's eerie at night listening to what sounds like bands of demons just howling through the windows and walls. So if you don't like noise while you are trying to sleep again this may not be the place for you. But if you are like me and you've been there and done that and experienced just about any form of hotel/condo/townhome etc then as long as you know this isn't the Ritz or even a Courtyard by Marriott but a basic condo unit that serves it's purpose for a good place to stay while on Maui.

Room Tip: 13 12 11 10 are good rooms to get so floors 5 and above so 513 612 711 810 etc are more oceanfront a...

Staff were very friendly. We booked oceanic view ( thinking its oceanic front) but got deceived. We requested for upgrade but staff were not willing to talk anything which was weird. Our expectations went down the first day. They don't have any restaurant inside Kahana, so walking to next hotel is the way to go. The staff were friendly to direct us to nice places around.

Room had a decent view of one part of the ocean. (8th floor). Room was clean but they don't have daily cleaning. ( You have to request in advance). It had full kitchen, washer and dryer. You have lot of food places within 10 miles around( around (Kaanapali). They have a late pizza place as well next to the place. Safeway can be a good bet if you plan to eat late or come back after a long drive. Cilantro is a good food place.

We were hoping to see turtles or whales but saw none. May be the wrong season. Concierge desk is really sad. Don't expect more from them. One of the lady even told us we can see sunset from our hotel front( on our first day) but they misguided us. You need to drive down approx 15 miles towards airport to see any sunset because the island ( in front of the hotel) blocks the view.

This hotel is approx 40 - 45 minutes form airport. So if you are driving Road to Hana, leave early in the morning. Even to Haleakala, this location adds 30- 40 minutes more to your trip each way.

( If you are first time visitor )- There are some roads in Maui which are not covered by rental company. I did drive those places but I would say avoid them or turn back. Not worth the time and effort.

Overall a decent stay but don't expect anything magical at this place. If you are expecting a hotel then this place is not for you.

Room Tip: This is not a typical hotel and doesn't have any restaurant.

We have been to Hawaii a few times but this was first trip to Maui. Quite a different experience from Ohau! On arrival at Hotel we were given a tote bag, which came in handy as no plastic bags allowed on the island. Also our 3yr old son was given kids backpack filled with activities, so we thought this was a really nice touch. The buildings are a bit dated, as is the decor, but our 2 bedroom unit was large and felt like a home. Kitchen and laundry were great with new applicances. We had partial ocean view, didn't managed to see any turtles. The pool was good for us, and always managed to get a seat etc. Family oriented. Went to the beach a few times, but the sea became deep very quickly, so didn't think this was good with a toddler, hence stayed in pool mostly.
You really need a car to stay here as no food provided in this hotel/condo. I recommend hotel next door for dinner - at happy hour the meals were half price so great if you are dining quite early with family. Our food was great.
We enjoyed Lahania township, nice shops/ great choice of cafes/restaurants. We also enjoyed doing the boardwalk around the very posh hotels further down at Sheraton etc. Nice walk.
For a quick meal, the pub aross the road is very handy for burgers etc, and there is a fabulous coffee shop there as well which we went to each morning - also provide nice snacks like bagels etc. So that is good option if you dont walkt to get in the car.
So, I wouldn't class Royal Kahana as a resort, but enjoyed our stay here.
