“31 Yellowfin Tuna? No Problem!”

Extreme Sport Fishing Maui
Reviewed February 5, 2013

We docked the boat at 2:30 am and were fishing around 5:30 am and returned to the dock around noon. Within seconds of dropping our lines in the water, we had a fish on, a big one! Captain Mason and Jimmy on the No Problem take no breaks and keep you busy catching fish. Reeling in the fish was quite the workout! We had 4 fish on at one point, what a rush. If you are looking to do some serious sport fishing, No Problem is the way to go!

My wife and I booked this private charter experience with another couple, the four of us have had plenty of fishing experiences in Canada but this was a trip of a lifetime! We are from Lloydminster Ab.Canada and are surrounded by hunting and fishing opportunities, but believe me when I say this, you can't go wrong with Captain Gene and his crew of Chris and Mike.
These guys are professionals that are passionate about fishing, we hooked up early with plenty of yellow fin tuna, got into some Mahi Mahi, then to top things off we tagged a beautiful blue Marlin!
Do this trip, get up early, pay the little extra, take your wife or girlfriend, family,it's a top notch boat, great crew and beautiful scenery........!
We will do this trip again......

I have lived on Maui in the winter for many years and finally decided to go out deep sea fishing. I stopped in at the docks in Lahaina one day and talked with Captain Gene on the Kai Akua and he explained his unique approach to gathering bait at midnight for a dawn patrol trip that leaves the dock at 2:30 am. It seemed a bit early to be going out since the bouys are only a couple of hours away. But as it turned out we did arrive at the bouy in the dark and we started catching Ahi as soon as we dropped our live bait in the water. There were 6 guests on a shared boat cost so we took turns in sequence catching fish. There was so much action we had all caught a couple fish in a couple hours. We landed 12 Ahi that averaged 24'' and a cuple of Mahi Mahi that were in the 4 foot range. I think we may have hooked and lost 5 or 6 more. The crew consisted of Captain Gene and deck hand Johnny. They were really great the way they worked the lines and got the bait back in the water as fast as possible to keep the fishing action going strong while the "bite" was on. They were also very good at instructing us amatuers in how to handle the fishing tackle and the sea conditions. The sea were rough at HS bouy buy we all took Gene's advice and ingested dramamine before we left the dock. They also gave us each several pounds of fish to take home which we ate for several days. The market price for fresh Ahi which I had been buying in the markets at this time was about $28 per pound! On the way back to the dock in the morning light and calm seas of the leeward protection of Maui we saw many Humpback whales jumping and blowing and slapping the crystal blue waters.

Went on Jan 12 full day charter, 5 people, 3 fishing. Boat caught 27 yellowfin tuna and 1 skipjack. Most 15-20 lbs, some up to 25 lbs. Charter departed 2;30am, started fishing 5am in the dark, caught 8-9 before light. Fishing at attracter buoy slowed down by 8am, switched to following birds and bait fish(only charter boat of 6 to do so), double and triple headers resulted. Captain Mason and Jimmy on the No Problem worked hard the whole time. Back at the dock by noon. Mason filleted 4 fish for us, had a great feast. I've been a big game and fishing guide in Canada (BC and the Arctic) for 18 years, these boys impressed me. If you want good value for your dollar and a great experience, book with Captain Mason and No Problem.

Mason and Jimmy did a great job getting us to the fishing. They are great characters and better fishermen. They are very conscious of all the passengers and go out of their way to make it a great fish. They switch bait and read the situation with such a passion it makes you want to cancel your flight home and become part of the crew.
We caught 17 Yellow Fin Tuna and you had the feeling we could have pulled in anything. They were just as excited to see a marlin hanging in the harbour on our return as everyone else, knowing it could have been us. Gotta love fishin.
Deep sea fishing is an adventure and these on the No Problem make it a great one.
