Do not waste your time in the tourist-ladden mess of chain restaurants on front street, you will not impress your tastebuds or your date!
I have dined here on three occasions in the past few months, and I don't even live on Maui! It is far from your average "hotel-restaurant"
#1. Location: beautiful hawaiian setting, half indoor/half outdoor overlooking lush tropical foliage with koi ponds, a beautiful bar (with a friendly bartender to go along), great furnishings inside the restaurant with both intimate & communal tables. I love the booths! Plus an initimate post-dinner walk on the beach is about 25 steps away from your table.
#2. Food: majority of their menu features local products that are costly but make up in quality products and support the local farmers of maui (the surfing goat dairy bruschetta!!!) talk about a delicious marriage of flavors in your mouth. Also recommend the chianti braised ribs & ahi pasta.
#3. Wine: for anyone to not order a glass of wine in this establishment would be a crime (excluding most young children and pregnant women). Not only do they offer other Italian wines than the norm (trebbiano or montelpulciano, anyone?) they also provide samplings from other countries, and not just california classics (although they have those too). The sommelier here obviously knows what he's doing, there are continuous innovative wine dinners going on, including a blind wine dinner this month. And I firmly believe that a man is only as good as the wine he chooses.
