Wo Hing Temple Museum

If you are interested in the history of the island this is a good place to go. We probably would not have visited but the ticket we purchased of the Baldwin home included a tour of Wo Hing. It doesn't take long to go through, but there are several things to see and read. Then in the 'cookhouse' there are old films of the island made by Thomas Edison. We found that to be interesting as well. There is a lot to learn here even if the subject doesn't particularly interest you.

Ok, the title was just a little sarcastic, if you milk it you can probably actually spend 20 minutes here. Wo Hing is a tribute to the Chinese history on the island. I love museums and history, the problem is there's just not a lot on display here and nothing to really connect you to what they're trying to show.

Inside the house, there's maybe a dozen or so things to see on each floor, and that's it. While we were there though there's a hidden gem in the barn out back. You'll find more stuff to see in there along with some benches and a flat screen TV.

Huh? A TV? Yeah, that doesn't really fit, but what's on it is some of Thomas Edison's home movies from the late 1800's when he visited Maui and Lahaina. That footage is worth the price of admission.

The Edision footage makes this worth stopping in. You'll get off your feet for a bit if you watch the film, no air conditioning or public restroom however. And a small donation gets you admission to both this site and the Baldwin House down the street. Also on a positive note, the volunteers working here are always very helpful not only about this location but with tips about other historical sites in Lahaina.

WO HING Museums Chinese Kite Festival

May 3rd to 5th 2013
We watched their Dragon Dance Show that was on the lawn of the Museum.
This was a free event and located right on Front Street.
It could only have been better if there was more room to watch them but with limited lawn space and limited standing on the sidewalk of Front Street it was as good as one could get.
