This resort is beautiful. Lots of pools, and the beach right at the front door. Dukes is a cool little restaurant, with lots of historama for those interested in learning about the Duke, and the area. It's not cheap, but overall the resort has pretty much everything you could need..but if you want to keep costs down there's a supermarket/takeaway places right across the road to stock up.
Top tip, if you head out of the resort and turn left, about 5 minutes away there is an AWESOME little roadside truck place where they sell the tastiest taco's for ridiculously cheap prices, like $2! We went there a LOT.
Also get out and find the chicken stalls on the side of the road, they're the most delicious things on the planet.... and don't forget to try the shaved ice. Not sure why we don't have this in Australia!
If you want to be right in the mix of things, try further along the road toward Lahaina, but for a resort style holiday, this place is great.

Room Tip: I don't think there is a bad room in this place!

This is a lovely, if expensive hotel, just a short drive from Lahaina. It has much to recommend it -- lovely grounds, spacious and well-designed rooms, and very friendly staff. There are some irritating features, including the surprisingly small number of hotel-run activities, the terrible road signs on the property, and the killer price. But it is a quiet, comfortable and generally impressive.

We stayed at Honua Kai in Sept. 2013 for two weeks. We have 4 children and the 2 bedroom, 2 bath unit fit us perfectly. Since we stayed right after school started the place was pretty empty. We never had a problem getting chairs at the pool and the beach was empty most days. The hotel itself was beautiful and well maintained. The pools were a lot of fun and our kids enjoyed swimming daily. Since we have a large family we knew we couldn't stay at a "traditional" hotel and the condos at Honua Kai worked perfectly for us. We stopped at Costco after we landed and stocked up on two weeks worth of food. Cooking was very easy and the condos came equipped with everything we needed. Having a washer and dryer was a life saver as well. We will definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: Interior courtyard ocean view rooms are shielded from the wind.

We chose Honua Kai because the price was right for the ratings it was getting from other travelers. It is actually a condo resort, so each room is has an owner, or potentially can be owned. It has all the amenities of a condo, like a full kitchen, living room, bedroom, and washer/dryer. It is run like a hotel, so there is housekeeping, room service, and all the regular stuff you would expect. There is a daily resort fee, but if you take advantage of the amenities, it can be worth it. They have a large pool area, with multiple pools, a fitness center, and a spa. They also have a market where you can get sandwiches and stuff. Duke's is the only restaurant, but it is very good. The location in Kaanapali is good, not too far from Lahaina, where you can spend a lot of time shopping or going out to eat. All-in-all, it is a good value for what you get.

Recently stayed here for four nights at the end of April in two bedroom ocean view with family of 4. The unit was beautiful in every way clean, modern, great shower and bathroom facilities, beds were very comfortable, kitchen facilities were great huge fridge, microwave and all the things you need to cook your own meal. The view was lovely from the 7th floor with plenty of room to sit outside and relax. The pool facilities were wonderful with a great choice of pools to swim in and hot tubs to relax in. Had no trouble finding a lounge to sit on around the pool.Dukes restaurant was hard to get into but was worth the wait with yummy food and tasty cocktails. The concierge was very helpful when finding activities for family to do and helped with booking these activities. The only trouble was we did not have a car so every time we wanted to go into the Whalers Village it would cost $25 each way by taxi, but there were some nice places to eat there and interesting shops. There is a good supermarket over the road where you can get food and alcohol from. Also just be aware the price of the unit when booking does not include taxes which are added each day so there is accommodation tax which for us was $50, daily resort fee which was $29 and general excise tax $23 these extras added over $100 a day to the bill. Overall we would stay here again can't find anything about the place that we did not like.

Room Tip: Higher floors have better views of the ocean.

After you decide where to go on vacation, the next most important decision you will make is where to stay. Fortunately, there are many hotel, condo, and/or resort options on the island of Maui. Deciding which place will best meet your needs can be quite daunting. We recently returned from a weeklong stay at Honua Kai Resort & Spa - Konea #510, and were very please with the fifth floor condo. The beachside resort complex is located in northwest Maui, approximately a 50 minute drive from the Kahului Airport. My twelve and fourteen year old daughters did most of the research prior to selecting the location. They are much more technically savvy than me. Our top four considerations were:

1. Location, Location, Location . . . the BEACH! Honua Kai Resort & Spa is located on the north end of Ka'anapali Beach. Maui is known for its world class beaches. Many travel publications rank Maui as having the best beaches in the world. Ka'ananapali Beach is rated the best beach on Maui. There is nothing like staying at the best of the best. Ka'ananapali Beach is rather long - about three miles. There are a half dozen other fancy resorts long this stunning beach all connected through a delightful paved beach-side pedestrian path. Bring your snorkel gear and either walk or drive the 1.2 miles down to Black Rock for some magnificent snorkeling. We saw fifteen Green Sea Turtles, six White Spotted Eagle Rays, two Manta Rays, a multitude of colorful fish, and numerous varieties of coral all in one morning of snorkeling. It is also a terrific location to work on your suntan. As an added bonus, there is a grocery store conveniently located a mere three minute drive or ten minute walk from Honua Kai Resort & Spa. Cooking/grilling your own meals will save you lots on food costs.

2. Value . . . the PRICE was right. After comparing all the Ka'anapali Beach resort properties, we found the most valve in renting a condo at the Honua Kai Resort & Spa directly from the owner. We rented a large one bedroom condo through Vacation Rentals By Owner (VRBO). Using VRBO saved us approximately 25% compared to the resort pricing of a similar unit. More importantly, we got to pick the location of our condo. VRBO is easy to use. Make sure you read the VRBO condo reviews and condo description listings. Based on your needs you can rent a one, two, or three bedroom condo. The Honua Kai Resort & Spa charges $15 per day for use of the underground parking structure. A vehicle is a must. There is so much to see and do in Maui. You need to have the autonomy to freely move around the island.

3. Customer Service. The condo owners, Steve & Elaine Nielson, were wonderful to deal with. They promptly and honestly answered all our questions. Everything listed in their condo description was accurate and in good working order. They even provided four beach towels, cooler bag, two Tommy Bahamas beach chairs, and a beach umbrella. Elaine checked up on us once we arrived in Maui via email to make we were satisfied with everything. The resort employees basically ignored us. It is enlightened self interest for the condo owner to make an effort to accommodate the renter. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Not all condos are the same nor are the condo owners. It is difficult to take into account the individuality of each dwelling and its owner; therefore, to a certain extent, you are playing the odds with VRBO.

4. It's a RESIDENCE, not just a hotel room. The condos are very nicely equipped with all the amenities in most upscale homes. Not all condos are created equal, so check the condo description listing prior to booking. There are two towers/buildings, Hokulani and Konea, that makeup the Honua Kai Resort & Spa complex. The Konea Tower is newer. If possible, stay in the Konea Tower. Our condo, Konea #510, had all the trimmings to include a deluxe king bedroom, a living room with a very comfortable queen sofa bed, and a fully equipped gourmet kitchen with Bosch stainless steel appliances and granite countertops. All the dishes, utensils, pots and pans, BBQ equipment, and even a cocktail shaker were all provided. The sizable bathroom also had granite countertops, a double sink, and a separate oversized soaking tub located beside the large glass shower. Free high speed wireless internet, two flat screen TVs, Blu-Ray player, and iPod docking station made the condo state of the art. At least my two teenage daughters thought so. The full-size Bosch stacking washer & dryer came in handy. We really enjoyed the folding, floor to ceiling Nana Doors in both the master bedroom and living room, leading to the lanai, and more importantly, letting the refreshing outside air in. It created a huge open area living space. Our condo had southern exposure with an extra-large and fairly private lanai, which made the openness feeling that much nicer. We ate all our dinners on the lanai. The stunning mountain views were amazing, especially at sunset. Maui is a windy place. The trade-winds generally blow from the northeast. In order to best shelter yourself from the windy weather make sure your condo is facing southwest, south or west. Don't go higher than the seventh floor. There is a vast well designed pool area with numerous pools. The pools always seemed crowded with lots of small kids. We spent the majority of our time at the beach.

If you want to stay in a RESIDENCE on Maui's finest beach and pay less, than consider renting a condo at the Honua Kai Resort & Spa through VRBO. You will not be disappointed if you are lucky enough to get condo #510 in the Konea Tower.

Room Tip: Konea condo #510 is an excellent choice. Condos with southwestern, southern or western exposure are...
