Booked a two bed apartment with partial view. Well we were so surprised by the high quality of the resort. The apartment was huge with two king size beds and two very large identical ensuites, great kitchen, big living room, washing machine and dryer, and just everything you need when on vacation. Every day you received laundry detergent, dish washing detergent, Aveda soaps and hair care products and the beds were made daily with a general tidy up as well. Pools were spectacular, great onsite cafe and Duke's restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and takeaways. Right across the road is a car rental and you don't have to pay for parking at the resort. This is a fantastic complex and I highly recommend it.

Very clean, large resort with good customer service. I can't complain about the rooms, service or grounds. The resort is close by (not walking distance) to restaurant and bars except Duke's restaurant and the gourmet shop inside the hotel. Great place for families and children. We went as a couple and were bored at the resort. No music at the pool, entertainment or bar. A ton of fun day trips close by to explore. Wished we would have stayed closer to front street where the action is!

Room Tip: Kitchen in rooms are great.

We spent four nights in Honua Kai in April 2014. Honua Kai is an excellent hotel, but not as relaxing as it could be.

LOCATION: Honua Kai is situated in Kaanapali, 10 minutes drive north of Lahaina. Hotel consists of two buildings - Hokulani and Konea. Hokulani has Aina gourmet market and is close to Duke's restauant, Konea has Ho'ola spa and fitness center. We stayed at Hokulani tower. Kai Malina parkway, which is the official street of the hotel is actually its private gateway, and northern access (from Lower Honoapiiliani road) is blocked by a gate that accepts room key. There is a convenient shopping center with Times supermarket on Lower Honoapiiliani road, but generally you'll need a car to get around. Also, there is notorious Sewage Treatment Plant across Honoapiiliani highway. On a bad day, you can feel its smell, but normally it's not an issue at all.

ROOMS: Most of the rooms are 1-2-3 bedroom suites. Some of them are hotel owned, some are privately owned and offered as vacation rentals. If you get you room as vacation rental, as we did, any of your questions and inquiries should be directed to your owner or management company, hotel's front desk is not your friend. Hotel has underground parking, and daily parking fee (either that or a higher resort fee) seems to be mandatory. Rooms are refreshingly new and spacious, have all modern appliances. Our glass wall in the living room can be completely folded to create one continuous space with the lanai. However, the view from the south side of Hokulani tower is not very impressive - there is some abandoned construction site next to the hotel.

On the first night and found a roach in a bathroom. It was a fateful meeting that only one of us has survived. I've seen no more roaches and not exactly sure whether it came from within the hotel or roaches just live wild in Hawaii.

FOOD: Duke's restaurant is convenient is reasonably good. You also can buy groceries in Aina market, but I would rather recommend going out to a supermarket.

POOL/BEACH: Honua Kai has one pool that is close to Hokulani tower and a whole complex of pools close to Konea tower. On a sunny day, these pools are very busy and you would be lucky to find two empty sunbeds close by. The beach (northern Kaanapali beach) is Ok by Maui's standards, but nothing special. If offers opportunity to swim and snorkel, but neither option is great - the bottom is rocky and fishes are few. I recommend going south to Black rock or north to Kapalua beach for a better time.

STAFF: Our property manager (Kalea) was very helpful and attentive. We didn't interact much with hotel's own staff.

Pros: New, clean, top-notch

Cons: Crowded, not the best beach

After debating for weeks on which resort we wanted to stay at, we stumbled upon Honua Kai. I was a little bit unsure since this is one of the newer resorts here. However, the reviews from other families were great and with condos available to rent, we figured this was the way to go.
I am so glad we opted for Honua Kai. The condo was gorgeous and very spacious. The kitchens were equipped with great appliances, which is a bonus when vacationing with small children. We were able to eat breakfast and lunch in our condo and on a few occasions we ate dinner there too.
I loved having a washer and dryer in the room, again very helpful when traveling with children.
And, speaking of children...this is a great family friendly resort without being overcrowded and loud. My children met many friends during our stay at HK. The pools are great and not deep, which again is great for children.
The beach is gorgeous and the beachwalk provides a great running or walking path for those who still remain active on vacation.
The market within HK offers amazing pastries and gourmet foods however that does come with a hefty gourmet price. But again, most products are organic and gluten free so it's worth it. There are several grocery stores and outdoor markets close by making general shopping very affordable. Dukes is located on property and is great for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
I've read reviews about odd smells, etc which I didn't experience whatsoever. The staff was friendly and helpful. My only complaint was when we asked for a late checkout they told us that even if they could accommodate they would charge us $175.00 plus taxes. We only needed the room for an extra 3 hours. That to be was incredibly disappointing especially since many flights out of Maui are later at night, especially for those of us who live in the Midwest.
Overall it was an excellent trip and I think that we would stay at the HK again.

We had a two bedroom unit. It was huge and in excellent shape and the view was beautiful. The kitchen had Bosch appliances and the stacked washer/dryer right next to the kitchen made everything easy. We chose to have a condo so we could cook for my child with food allergies and were very happy with this choice. It was expensive, but it is Hawaii and we did feel like it was worth it (unlike a hotel we stayed in that was outrageously priced for a small, tired, room).

We stayed three nights in HH1035. Very well appointed 1 bedroom condo style room. The balcony was large and seating was very comfortable. We had a mountain view and it was very pretty. The highway was a little noisy when the doors were open but once the doors are closed, it's quiet. Linens and toiletries were plenty, the only thing I missed were mirrors. there is only one in the bathroom throughout the whole place. Speaking of the bathroom, worst shower head ever!!! Very minimal water and it came streaming out in a way that made me just want to hurry and get out! The grounds are very well kept and beautiful however there is a faint smell of feces sometimes. I think it may have been from the sewage treatment plant that is right across the highway. It sort of turned me off from swimming in the pools. The pools look a lot larger in the pictures. I found them to be on the small side for such a huge resort. The beach is very pretty with high surf which means there is no swimming in the ocean at this resort. There are kids EVERYWHERE!! Defiantly not for couples looking to get away and relax but fantastic for families that was to get out and play. Although they have closed their kids activities club. *saw a few parents having a fit over that*
There are two place within the resort to eat. Dukes, which serves BLD. and Aina, a little "gormet" delicatessen. Prices here are incredibly high! An average bottle of wine will run you $45. Lots of gluten free choices though. :) I found the check in staff not very personable but the valet service was one of the best consistently over the three days we were there. Due to the high cost/smell around the grounds/showers/and kids all over the place, I didn't really feel it was a good value for my money and won't be back, however families with children would most likely enjoy it here.

Room Tip: Bring your own food.
