“Second of 3 islands during honeymoon”
Reviewed April 3, 2014

Maui was my husbands and my 2nd of our 3 island honeymoon visit. We chose to stay here at the Honua Kai because of the reviews and because I liked the idea of being in a condo. We were here in November for 6 nights, this hotel is pretty much on Kaanapali beach. Gorgeous and expansive property with multiple pools, some separated for adult use only. Right on the beach, but there are no resort chairs to use while on the beach that we were aware of-who cares, the sand is wonderful. We had a 1 bedroom room. The room had washer and dryer, which we did use quite a bit. I get tired of eating out day after day, and considering that this was a 2.5 week trip, it was nice to have a stretch of days were I could prepare my own meals if I so felt. The room had all the dishes/pans you might need, they supply detergent and dish soaps. There is a small grocery store on the grounds, but we went to Times across the street. I believe all rooms have balcony or lanai. Valet parking is included in your price but it isn't too far to park yourself if you please. We will be back.

Honua Kai is right on Kaanapali Beach, and the walk along the beach is beautiful.
The condo had a washer and dryer, which made us very happy - it was right in the middle of our 3 week trip so the timing was perfect.
There is a small grocery right downstairs where we were able to get breakfast and coffee as well as prepared foods and wine.
Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The pool is lovely.
There are shopping centers and restaurants quite nearby. The complex is about 10 minutes from Lahaina, a fun town for shopping and eating.
We will consider returning if we revisit Maui.

Room Tip: Try to get a room overlooking the beach, but we had a resort view and it was fine.

I did A LOT of research before picking Honua Kai and I've been to Maui 8+ times before. After reading reviews, I saw that unless I was going for a FULL Ocean View room, there was no point in paying that much to peek through the trees at the ocean that I was looking at all day by the pool anyway. So we opted for a resort view (which really means you face the mountains, its just bigger than a "mountain view" room). I decided to book through the hotel instead of VRBO for a few reasons: you get ALL the amenities of staying in a hotel that way: valet parking, charging drinks/food/store items to the room, concierge service, and the best for me as a mom- MAID service!! To those reviewers who said the maid service is spotty- try tipping them daily- a couple bucks gets you fresh towels EVERYDAY, made up beds, plenty of laundry and dish-washing detergent, washing dishes and running our dishwasher for us and more soap, shampoo & conditioner than you could ever need! I was in hotel heaven!
We booked a 1 bedroom suite for 2 adults and 2 kids thinking the kids would just bunk together on the sofabed and were pleasantly surprised to find the hotel was totally booked and we were upgraded to a 2 bedroom. The upgrade meant we were put on the 3rd floor right above the valet parking pull up of the Hokulani building, but really, it was more than fine- the waterfalls, palm trees and tiki torches down there made for a fine view for our week long stay. Also, our room was so quiet, I never heard the people upstairs or down in the valet area, or anywhere for that matter, the walls must be thick- I slept like a baby.
The store at the hotel is pretty pricey, but with good coffee. EVERYTHING they sell is organic, local goods which is nice, except when you just want some heinz ketchup or a monster energy drink. But the big grocery store across the street was totally convenient for things like that and for stocking the fridge for the week.
The pool chairs can get somewhat crowded, but they have gazebos and shaded cabana seats you can reserve to be right by the pool to keep an eye on your kids. TIP** if you need sunglasses for your trip- wait and buy Maui Jim's from the pool services stand and they will give you a free cabana for the week to sweeten the deal!
The BBQ's in the pool areas are awesome for making lunch or dinner and there's plenty of room to sit and eat in the shaded picnic area.
The beach is not as bad as I've read here and the snorkeling is GREAT! It's not as calm as say, Black Rock, but way less crowded and way more fish to see for hundreds of yards, including sea turtles swimming in the surf. We all bought water shoes which came in handy for our boys to boogie board on that beach, since it is rocky with sharp coral just under the sand.
The pool towel service is very easy, I just missed the explanation- but it's a trade thing, you take your pool towel card to the pool service kiosk and get fresh towels, then you trade your wet towels for dry ones or wet towels for towel cards. Don't leave your wet towels by the pool, it'll be hard to get new ones without a card or towels to trade for! Because of this system, the maids do not take your pool towels from your room.
Dukes is great for drinks & apps by the pool, as well as for dinner in the restaurant and it was VERY nice to charge our afternoon drinks to the room while lounging by the pool. All the staff at Honua Kai and Dukes were sooo friendly and helpful, it really is a 5 star resort.
The sunsets were beautiful and it being March, we watched whales breaching off the coast while our kids played with other guests kids in the sand. We seriously couldn't have asked for more and will definitely be back!!

Room Tip: Book through the hotel to get all the amenities they offer. Resort View rooms are just larger versi...

This hotel is amazing. From the moment we came in we were accommodated to the extra den room we requested. The hotel room is gorgeous with amazing decorations and the layout is perfect. The bedroom is a little small but that is my only complaint. The pools are absolutely great. The seating around the pools does get filled up pretty quick so I would come earlier in the day or in "not so hot" times. We had a great stay and are looking forward to coming back of we have the chance.

We booked our stay through our airline. So there was not much correspondence from the resort unless we contacted them directly. There are 2 towers. Of course, upon arrival, we chose the wrong tower. No big deal...we drove to the next tower in less than a minute. The bellmen greeted us with a very welcoming welcome. They asked and checked to make sure we were at the right tower before unloading our things. Once we were given the okay, they helped unload everything (including our groceries.) Our room was not ready so they stored our items. While waiting, we walked the beautiful grounds. Every staff member we saw greeted and welcomed us.

Our party: me and my wife and 2 kids (11 & 6). We chose a 2bd ocean view condo. Before arrival, we requested the 2nd bedroom bed be split into 2 twins. Apparently that is why our room wasn't ready, but no worries. We were given room 707. The room was exactly as advertised. Huge fully-stocked kitchen; living area with fold-out couch, 2 chairs, coffee table with blankets and pillows inside, blu-ray DVD player, large t.v., access to lanai; dining area with 4 chairs but room for many more; washer and dryer; guest bedroom (put into 2 twins, just as we requested) with 2 closets, dresser, t.v., 2 night stands; guest bath with separate shower and bath tub, dual sinks; master bedroom with king bed, 2 night stands, dresser, t.v., access to lanai; master bath with separate shower and bath tub, dual sinks, a close-off water closet. Our only issue was with the dryer. It would run for 3 minutes and stop with an error code. But it did work correctly a few times. We did use the washer/dryer everyday. On a day that the dryer did not work we placed the towels outside on the lanai to dry. We forgot about them and the next morning had a very polite note waiting for us about not leaving things on the lanai in view of others. No worries...we took care of that.

The trade winds were up and going very nicely the first 3 days. Winds with a sustained 25-30 mph. The waves in the ocean were pretty strong. Surfers, boogie boarders, etc. were loving it. We didn't think too much of the wind. We are use to it. Our state song even says, "...where the wind comes sweeping down the plain." But just know that the wind does blow, especially, in the afternoon. With all the wind, we never once smelled the water treatment plant that is across the street.

We found the location to be excellent. Not too far from anything. There is a grocery store right across the street that has anything you might need. There are eating places in the same shopping center. Not too far from Front St. in Lahaina either. We walked along the beach front a long way. Beautiful. We walked north to a nice park with a playground and passed many local eating establishments too. We drove to Kapalua Bay which is a great public beach to go snorkeling with kids. It was only about 15 min. away.

Would recommend without any hesitation. Just simply...an amazing place.

We booked unit #338 in the Hokulani bldg. through VRBO (KBM). This was our first time booking anything through VRBO and we were hesitant at first but in the end glad we did. As instructed, I called our contact on our way in from the airport. John greeted us in the lobby as planned and took us up to the room. It was exactly as I expected, minus one boogie board, which was delivered the next day as promised!
The suite comes with beach chairs, beach umbrella, boogie boards, sand toys, rolling cooler, high chair and play pen. The kitchen is large, fully equipped with pots and pans, utensils, and water jug. Plan to bring salt/pepper, oil etc. You don't get housekeeping service (I think you can arrange at an additional cost) so you may want to bring shampoo etc, we ran out of what they provided. The sofa bed was perfect for our young kids, not the most comfortable for an adult! Bathroom was large, CLEAN, and has a separate shower and tub. You have to remove your own garbage and recycling, there's a garbage room on each floor. Washer/dryer was a blessing, especially when you have kids and are at the beach everyday!
It was nice to be able to pre-pay everything so we didn't have to worry about paying a bill when we left. The restaurant on the property is Duke's and is a great place, on the beach, and good food. A little pricy but so is everything in Maui! THe pools are fantastic for the kids, there are a couple of options. I found one of the pools too cold but that didn't stop the kids or others. The beach out from is nice but the water is a bit rough. Move down east or west a bit and you'll find calmer waves. The boardwalk that runs in front of the resort is perfect for morning walks/runs. You can check out the other resorts along the route. Honua Kai is the newest resort on the strip, looks like a new resort is going to be build next to it soon. Parking is free in the lot in front of the resort which is great. There are BBQs by the pools for people to use. The lanai was big, had a table with chairs (ate breakfast out there every morning) and the doors folded open so that it can be completely open to the inside. It made the suite feel twice as large!
Overall, I would stay here again if staying in Ka'anapali. It did rain here for a few days, while it was sunny in Wailea and Kihei the same days so we may look into that part of Maui next. Location is good, close to Lahaina, Whalers Village. If you play tennis, there are no courts on the property but just down the road there's a tennis club and the fee is minimal to play and the courts are nice. Safeway is close, Costco and Whole foods are about 30 mins away, expect traffic coming home though so add 15 mins. Valet staff were excellent, gave great advice and helped with groceries and bags. Aina's is the coffee shop on site. They have great tasting coffee and baked goods. They also sell a limited amount of groceries, more expensive than the Safeway, but you're paying for the convenience.
Definitely recommend this resort. Our friends stayed in the other tower and had the same experience. They booked through the resort directly. They paid a bit more but booked this way because the cancellation policy was more accommodating. Their suite did not come with the chairs, boards, etc. but they did get daily cleaning and bathroom supplies.

This was my second time staying at Honua Kai, and my first renting privately through VRBO. The benefits of renting through VRBO: cost savings, knowing exactly which unit you are getting, beach equipment in rooms for use. The downside: having to wash your own towels daily. Nonetheless in both scenarios you will get a beautiful, modern, spacious well equipped room while enjoying the amenities of a 4 star hotel. Being able to cook some of your own meals, watch TV in a living room, and do some laundry is much more superior than staying in a small hotel room with a mini fridge (Hyatt, Westin properties).

The grounds are exotic and immaculate with beautiful gardens and many pools that include a waterside and waterfalls for play. There are many different areas where you can lie down on lounge chairs (poolside, grassy shaded areas, ocean view, and next to Duke's to enjoy the live music from 3:00pm onwards) On site is a restaurant called Duke's which is very busy, for good reason! The price is very reasonable and the food is always amazing (especially the Aloha Hour specials!) There is also a small coffee shop and whole foods grocery store called Aina. We loved getting our coffees here in the morning and walking around the property.

The location of Honua Kai is on North Kaanapali Beach. The beach here is great although directly in front of the resort there is quite a bit of coral and rocks (good for snorkelling). However, if you walk five minutes down the beach you are met with sandy beaches and crystal clear water. The best part is it lacks the busyness of the more populated South Kaanapali (Dig Me) Beach. As for people complaining about the wind….the ongoing breeze is appreciated in the hot tropical weather! On the days it was not breezy it was harder to lie out in the sun all day!! I also did not notice a smell at the resort. It is true that if you are out on the highway near Honua Kai that you can notice the sewage smell, but in both of my stays here I have never noticed the smell at the property.

This resort is great for any sized group travelling to Maui. We will never stay anywhere else!
