“Too many problems to be rated well”
Reviewed August 16, 2013 via mobile

The suites themselves are nicely appointed, although there are many simple things lacking in the kitchen (i.e oven mitts). The grounds and the lobby are nice, but here are the list of problems:

The rooms are not cleaned well on a daily basis. The same stain remained on the tap in the bathroom until I removed it using a tissue and water. If it was that easy for me to remove, what did the cleaning staff do? We were there for two weeks and had to ask for the sheets to be changed at day 10. Staff were knocking on the door at 8:30am to "clean" and if we weren't ready to go, our room would not likely be cleaned that day without a great deal of reminders to housekeeping.

The exercise room was well equipped, however, every piece of equipment with a television monitor was broken. Having a TV to watch while you exercise is a plus especially if the view isn't great (an empty grass field), but they're no good if none of the ear phone jacks work and you don't have the option of enabling close captioning so you can at least read the dialogue.

There were four pools on the grounds including the one reserved for "quiet" use. All of the pools were only 3-4 feet in depth which makes swimming out of the question. They are too small given the number of people trying to use them. Guests hold several spots first thing in the morning and then disappear for hours. Other resorts I have stayed at remove items after an hour to allow other guests to use them. Many of the umbrellas used for shade were broken. Babies were allowed to use the pools without swimming diapers and, if fact, I saw one woman cleaning her baby's poopy bottom in the pool in between a diaper change. It was absolutely disgusting.

The beach in front of the resort is narrow and there are a lot of rocks in the water. We found ourselves traveling 5-10 minutes up the road to spend time at any number of bays which were sheltered, had rocky areas for snorkelling as well as sandy areas in the water so you could play without hurting your feet. Our favourites were Napili, Kapalua and Honolua.

Take a look at those who provided a good review. Too much emphasis is placed on the suites which are nice, but don't make up for the problems, especially given the rates charged. We won't be returning.

We stayed with our 3 and 5 year old in a two bedroom condo. We loved the modern, clean, spacious living area and decent sized balcony. The curtains are very good at blocking light allowing a sleep in too. There is a great coffee shop in the foyer selling icecreams and interesting local boutique produce as well as a supermarket in walking distance. That's important for us as we ate dinner in a few nights and lunch most days. The pool area is busy but plenty of deck chairs around the four or five pools. The beach is just over a dune which is nice to be out of sight from the hotel. The water is flat and I had my 5 year old snorkelling and we saw turtles every day. It's a 15 min taxi to town, we didn't hire a car. The kids club is a bit lacking, staff not terribly enthusiastic and seems more like supervised play rather than organised activities. Not sure it would be suitable for kids old than mine. Dukes for dinner is perfect to have right on the premises. We will be back!

Great location (on Kaanapali Beach). Modern and clean rooms with hi-end appliances. Perfect condo for spreading out and relaxing. Service was prompt and courteous. The concierge (Kimmy) was very helpful with great suggestions and reservations. Would definitely recommend it!

Just got back from an eight night stay at Honua Kai. Two adults and two teens - 18 and 16. The resort was amazing and far better than expected. Beautiful property which is well worth the visit. Here are the issues that I and others wanted to know beforehand--

Staff - the staff were all very friendly and helpful. From the front desk and valet to the housekeeping. The only exception was a cranky, obnoxious older gentlan working in the towel/activity booth. Avoid him if you can.

Wind - loved it! The wind/island breeze kept things cool and made the temps much more comfortable.

Pools. - we stayed during the height of summer vacation season so the pools did have lots of kids. We didn't mind, but couples who want quiet should probably stay at a different time.

Beach - the beach sand is soft and the water clear and warm. Snorkeling is fantastic. My kids snorkeled right off the hotel beach with just pool goggles. While it is narrow next to the hotel, if you walk just 100 yards the beach gets wider and wider.

There are many, many additional positives that make HK the place to stay. - HUGE condos and lanais, equiped fitness centers, beach walk and location. We will definitely stay again.

My parents treated our immediate family to a celebration vacation to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. We had a great time at this condo-resort. The in-room kitchen had granite countertops and stainless appliances, which I think is standard in all units. Two HVAC units kept both our rooms comfortable when we didn't have the wall of windows open to the lanai. Our unit faced the ocean and we enjoyed lovely sunsets at cocktail hour before dinner. They have Viking grills onsite by the pools for grilling in, or you can take in a great restaurant nearby.

A few things that are different in this condo-resort than a typical hotel resort:
--the front desk is helpful, but can only do so much if the unit you've rented is not one they manage. Fortunately for us, ours was.
--the beach at the hotel has a reef that riuns along it...so, it's a little rough going when the tide is low, but still very very enjoyable! The water is clearer here than further south on Kaanapali (at least it was when we were there 1 week after Flossie blew through). Snorkeling is great here, there are a few really big turtles that hang out on the outer reef.
--the snorkel rental and pool services are run by a contracted company, so keep careful count of your rental items and towel cards!
--there is only one restaurant (Duke's) onsite; the coffee and sundries store is only in one of the two towers....not a super big deal, but something you should know prior to booking.
--there are great casual places to eat across the street (mexican, pizza, mediterranean, bbq) as well as a grocery store. We bought just a few items at Costco (near the airport on the other side of the island), then the rest at the market nearby.
--there is one Hawaiian souvenir/clothing store also in the mall across the way--might save you from a last-minute trip to Lahaina for gifts, etc.

Room Tip: Room 313 was immaculate and listed as a partial ocean view (I think) this 2-bedroom unit had an exce...

Great hotel/resort for couples and families. Three pools, great views, large rooms with nice kitchens. We had a studio with ocean front view. I spent many hours on the lanai just looking at the scenery. The actual accommodation was one of the best we have ever seen. HOWEVER, the housekeeping staff was the absolute worse I have ever found. I have stayed in every class of hotel on five continents. I have never had service this poor. If you don't operate on the housekeeping staff schedule, your room does not get cleaned (if what they do can be called cleaning). One day, we returned from breakfast just as housekeeping was getting to our room. We told them we would be right out. Five minutes later we left for 4 or 5 hours. When we returned, nothing had been done to our room. I called housekeeping and the hotel manager to complain. We did get the room cleaned. The next day, they pulled up the sheet on the bed and through the pillows on the bed. Dirty towels were left in the tub. Hair was left in the shower drain. I could go on but it was simply horrible. The concierge staff is a bit hit and miss. I had great luck with Kate. She followed through on everything and was extremely helpful. Another staff member failed to inform us that a Luau we were to attend was cancelled and then failed to follow up on a replacement reservation. A strong positive is the friendliness of all of the staff. I really do hate to say this but I will look into other possible resorts for future visits.

Room Tip: While the views of the mountain are great, pay as much as you can afford to get an ocean view room

Had a fantastic time at Honua Kai on a family vacation. With 3 different pools, 3 or 4 hot tubs, and a gorgeous beach right outside, how could you not? We loved the amenities of the room, including full kitchen and washer & dryer in the room. Property was quiet, beautiful, and pristine. We could smell the wastewater plant when outside the hotel in the front, but not from the pool area, beach, or from our room, which was right in front (4th floor).

The deli/cafe was nice, though we found the main restaurant (Duke's) to be overpriced & generic. We ate breakfast in our room and toured the rest of the island for lunches & dinners. Service around the resort (poolside, towels, front desk) was friendly, if not speedy. We especially appreciated that it didn't have the snotty attitude of other name-brand or "chain" resorts.

Snorkeling outside the hotel was excellent, expecially toward the south end (toward the Westin). You can also walk to Black Rock outside the Sheraton in about 15 minutes. We found the hotel ideally situated for a summer stay, though might have stayed somewhere south of Lahaina if we were there in the winter.

Would definitely book there again on a return trip.
