Family of five stayed for 6 nights. Room was clean and very nice. Ocean view was great (room 709 - two bedroom). Snorkeling was fantastic - reefs right next to hotel,...beautiful fish, squid, sea turtles - wonderful! No need to go on a snorkel cruise (there are more fish to see here than any other snorkel area on this island - we've been several times, in many different places around the island - this was one of the best, if not THE best place to snorkel on Maui.

Why am I then giving this resort a 3 ??...because the service was not good, nor was it consistent. Mind you, we had just stayed at an Aston 2 bedroom resort/condo on Waikiki for 5 days, and the service there was excellent - in every way. But why shouldnt I expect be the same at Honua Kai ? Some examples of bad service: an older gentleman/employee at the amenities/activities hut (i.e. fresh towels, returning towels, snorkeling equip, etc) was rude and seemed like he was doing everyone a favor by giving them fresh towels. It was not pleasant whenever anyone went over there. One time he didnt give us our towel card back after i asked him (nicely) - he just didnt care one bit. Also, our waiter (Frank) at Duke's told my 11 year old son that he "should have said cheeseburger with nothing else on it" if he wanted it that way,...and the crazy thing is that all of us at the table heard my son tell the waiter that he wanted the cheeseburger with nothing else on it - twice!! - and he definitely said it loud and clear as well. Instead of telling my son "you should have said that", the waiter should have said something like "oh, sorry, i didnt hear you" or would it have killed him to just take the burger away and said "sure, no problem" ?? For a $300 dinner that evening, the service was lacking (although the food was good and fresh). Another incident - while at the pool ordering a Mai Tai, the bartender did not add Rum to my drink,...he said "oh, i thought you ordered a virgin Mai Tai",...but then why did he charge me the full price of a regular Mai Tai ??? There were a couple other issues, but in the interest of not writing a novel, I will stop here.

If the service was good all around, I would have given this place at least a 4.5. We have decided, next time we will go to the Westin villas right next door (or find an Aston property).

Went here in June 2013. Stayed in a 3 bedroom condo through a private owner. The resort is amazing. Three different pools, numerous spas and plenty of lounge chairs. Great access to a nice beach as well. The grounds are spotless and they obviously care about how clean the resort is. Dukes on the property is a great place as well, albeit a bit on the pricey end. Overall, would come here again.

Only downside, no onsite spa and salon. Sounds picky, but as on vacation wanted to get wifey a massage and not possible on the grounds.

Just got back from a great vacation in Maui and stayed at this great condo that felt like a resort. We had a 2 bedroom partial ocean view and it was extremely clean and plenty big. There were not many things I didn't like about this place. It is a bit windy but that is beyond their control. I did wish the market opened earlier than 7am for breakfast. We never had trouble finding chairs at the 3 pools and we had 13 people in our group. We ate at Dukes a few times and it was always good. Would definitely stay here again.

Great service at the front desk! We had a studio room in a corner, but our ocean view and view of the pool/grounds was amazing. We loved the open patio, moving the glass doors back made our room feel enormous. The kitchen & bathroom were the best we have seen at a resort. The beach and walking path are fantastic here. We did have to ask for a room refresh one day...not sure if they missed us or what. Many activities are available for families with a daily guide provided to guests. We loved our stay at Honua Kai.

Room Tip: The studio is plenty for a couple, but we would want a 1 or 2 bedroom if we took the kids.

This is a great resort. We went through a real estate mgmt company (Chasing Rainbows) instead of the hotel so that we could pick our room/view. This was a great decision. We had a spacious, nicely furnished room with a great view. The hotel could upgrade to padded pool lounge chairs to compete with the nearby resorts. Dukes was a lot of fun and had a great location. Looking forward to our return trip to the island!
